![]() The Pistons coaching search seems like it's dragging on, a small hallmark of the Tom Gores regime, one that wants to thoroughly evaluate every possible candidate, paying no mind to time. But as the Pistons concluded their interview with Oklahoma City assistant Maurice Cheeks Wednesday, their first face-to-face meeting after phone conversations while the Thunder were still in the playoffs, it appears they won't be bringing in any more candidates, a source tells The Detroit News. Cheeks received a thunderous ovation Feb. 29 in Philadelphia when a video tribute to him was played during a timeout. Cheeks was also recognized Monday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena during the first timeout of the Thunder's 95-91 victory over Dallas. Brooks and others have expressed shock Cheeks has yet to be inducted. "He should be in, no disrespect to the voters," Brooks said. "He's a Hall of Famer in my mind, in many people's minds." Oklahoman Cheeks said he does not look at his outsider status as an injustice, however. "No, you can't look at it that way. Any time you have an opportunity to get into a hall of fame, from my standpoint, it's an honor," said Cheeks, who was chosen for the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. "I mean, come on. How many people get to play this game for so many years with so many great players? To have a chance to get in is special. Obviously, to actually get in is more special." Oklahoman |

To everyone, it seems, but former 76er Matt Barnes. Barnes clearly has quite a bit of pent up anger and clearly deserved resentment built up towards his former Philadelphia coach, and though dropping 25 points in this game obviously helped, Barnes didn't waste a second in dishing on Cheeks in his interview with Dan LeBatard on 'Dan LeBatard is Highly Questionable' on Tuesday: Yahoo! ![]() After seven years of rejection by the Basketball Hall of Fame, former Bulls assistant Tex Winter, 89, finally will get in. So will Dennis Rodman. And sources say Chicago native and 76ers great Maurice Cheeks also will be inducted Aug. 12 in Springfield, Mass. “It’s been a long time coming, and it’s well deserved,” Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said. “Not only because of the tremendous impact he had on the NBA and the championships he helped win, but because he also had a great college coaching career. It’s just sad that it didn’t happen when he could really enjoy it.” Chicago Sun-Times |

![]() Maybe one of the players previously passed over for enshrinement finally joins the Hall of Fame when the Class of 2011 is revealed Monday in Houston. That would fit well with the drive of Jerry Colangelo to ensure that candidates from the past do not get lost in the ages. The Hall chairman sees that as enough of a priority that he helped create a pair of old-timers' committees that are each guaranteed one inductee a year. Or not. Maybe Chris Mullin, Dennis Rodman, Jamaal Wilkes, Maurice Cheeks and Ralph Sampson have another round of disappointment and no player with deep NBA roots get in this year. That would fit well with history -- each has failed in previous bids, some several times. Mullin has missed five times in a row. He'll be off the ballot the next five years if he is not elected this time. NBA.com A former NBA player could sneak in, elected via the ABA selection (though their biggest mark would have come in the now-defunct league) or the Early African -American Pioneers of the Game committee, the two groups Colangelo helped develop. Both committees were given the unique ability to choose one person for automatic induction, without having to become a finalist and then receive at least 18 of 24 votes for enshrinement. It's often pointed out, by those around the NBA, that the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame is not the NBA Hall of Fame. We'll find out Monday, when the inductees are revealed at collge basketball's Final Four, whether the NBA will be represented at all this fall in Springfield, Mass. NBA.com |
