A source said the Mavs have agreed to non-guaranteed deals with a pair of veterans, swingman Chris Douglas-Roberts and center/forward Melvin Ely. They will join the team Friday morning. The Mavs, who are in the process of parting ways with Delonte West, will likely choose between one of the three newcomers for their final roster spot. One potential roadblock could be if negotiations don't progress with West's agent, Dan Fegan, and the Mavs opt to leave West on the suspended list. ESPN.com

In the meantime, because of injuries to Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Kaman and Brandan Wright, the Mavs need some serious help on the frontline. That's why they're bringing in centers Eddy Curry, Chris Douglas-Roberts and Melvin Ely. The Mavs bend over backwards to make it work with West. But they are close to cutting ties with the wily veteran after he was suspended without pay today. Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Melvin Ely, who is reportedly heading to China, crumpled to the ground after taking a blow to his face. In some fairly serious pain, Ely was escorted to a training area away from the court, where he was attended to by medical personnel. On his way there, though, he took a quick detour to upend a large gatorade bucket in frustration, crashing the contents behind one of the team's benches. Players chuckled and media members raised their eyebrows. CBSSports.com

The Nets and Nuggets are discussing a deal that would send Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Melvin Ely, Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams to the Nets for Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh and four first-round draft picks, a league source with knowledge of the talks told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday night. Now, the pressure could be back on the New York Knicks to sweeten their offer and get Anthony before the Feb. 24 trade deadline. Knicks president Donnie Walsh has seemed willing to let Anthony go into free agency, when New York can try to sign him in the summer. The Knicks and Nuggets have negotiated steadily in recent weeks, but Denver has been frustrated with New York’s reluctance to part with key young players in a deal. Yahoo! Sports

Of these types of meetings, Nuggets coach George Karl said: "I think they're Band-Aids. But sometimes they turn the corner, sometimes it works. To me, it's a sign that they know there's a problem, so that's good." Ely is a seven-year veteran, meaning he is also a veteran of players-only meetings. He's seen both sides of these things. "I was with San Antonio, and we had a players-only meeting. And you can be for (darn) sure that we didn't lose much after that. "I played for the Clippers. Had a players-only meeting. Still lost." Denver Post

Ely said players can have a meeting just to have a meeting, but the only way it will work is if the players approach it honestly and with thick skins. Coaches matter, yes. But, as Ely said: "Sometimes, players need a kick in the butt — and the best people to do it are the other players. I could go up to Melo and say something bad, and I bet you that he'd take it worse than if a coach said it. "It's all dependent on the players. Sometimes, if the right things are said, it can help. But you can't go in there kissing the top player's butt because he's the top player. You got to be truthful, 1 through 15. If that happens, then I think that would work." Denver Post

Ely, who has career averages of 5.6 ppg and 3.7 rpg, is about to sign a non-guaranteed contract with Denver, which would become his sixth team in the league. "This is a great opportunity for Melvin and he's ready for the challenge," Irvin said. HoopsHype
