Shakur's goal is to develop his entrepreneurial skills, a la Magic Johnson. His NBA future is far from guaranteed, given the looming lockout and his free-agent status. Contract or no, Shakur says Part of the Solution is something he will always put his all into. His vision is to make the event a one-stop shop where young people can come for mentoring, motivation, and rites-of-passage programs for future careers that probably won't have anything to do with basketball. Before the game, I informed Larry Owens and Othyus Jeffers that they were both named to the NBA Developmental League second team. Owens was happy to hear the news, but Jeffers responded by asking, “Second team?” Saunders gave the D-League all-stars an opportunity to close out the game with Seraphin, Yi and Mustafa Shakur. They were handed a three-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but were unable to hold on. Washington Post |

His agent, Leon Rose, called him to let him know that the Wizards planned to sign him last Friday. The Vipers were in Bismark, N.D., playing a back-to-back set against the Dakota Wizards, so Shakur had to hope on a plane and leave his basketball shoes and other equipment behind, since it was locked up in the arena. He got a pair of size 12 adidas shoes for his debut against the Boston Celtics, an appearance that his been overshadowed by his ridiculously bad jersey, which had been stitched together -- seemingly by hand -- only a few hours before the game. Nick Young joked that the jersey should be "retired." Shakur's uniform has since been put together properly, but he actually asked for the original. "I'm going to frame it and put a little story headline under it." When asked what the headline would read, Shakur said, "I don't know, what you do think it should read?" Someone said, "I'm just happy to be here." "There you go," Shakur said. Washington Post |

How did you find out you’d been called up to the Wizards? Mustafa Shakur: My agent texted me. I was on the road in Dakota playing an away game, and after the game I saw I had a text. It said, “The Wizards called you up for a 10-day. You’re outta here in the morning.” Dime |

His number, and last name, were stitched on at the last second by a Wizards employee. And while the stitching held up, it was clear the Wizards employee didn't exactly hold up the number placement to any sort of scrutiny, because the number "22" was a little down, and to the left. And with plenty of spacing between the two "2"s. The Washington Post's Michael Lee talked to Shakur after the game: So hastily was he added to the roster that it appeared his jersey wasn't quite ready either. Shakur wore No. 22, but the lettering and his name plate were clearly out of position. "I don't know. I think they tried to put my zip code on there," Shakur said, eliciting laughter throughout the locker room. "They, you know, messed it up a little bit." Yahoo! Sports |

The Wizards appear to be making plans in case Kirk Hinrich is out for an extended period. Scott Schroeder of AOL Fanhouse is reporting that the team is calling up Mustafa Shakur from the D-League. Schroeder spoke Friday night with Shakur, who said that he expects to be in Washington in time for the Wizards' game on Saturday against the Boston Celtics. "Hopefully, if everything goes right with my flights, I'll get there and get situated and then be ready to play against the Celtics," Shakur said. Washington Post A league source said that Shakur is "likely" to be signed to a 10-day contract. Shakur is a 6-foot-3 point guard who is averaging 16.7 points, 5.0 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 1.9 steals this season while making 48.8 percent of his field goal attempts for the D-Leagues's Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The Wizards have been keeping tabs on Shakur for some time and considered signing him before bringing back Lester Hudson after the Gilbert Arenas trade. He participated last week in the D-League Showcase in Texas -- where Wizards vice president of basketball administration Tommy Sheppard was in attendance -- and earned second team honors. Washington Post Mustafa Shakur, a 6-foot-3 point guard, is expected to be called up from the NBA D-League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers to the Washington Wizards for a 10-day contract, according to a source close to the situation. Shakur, in an interview with FanHouse on Friday night, said that he expected to be available to play in Washington's game Saturday night at home against the Boston Celtics. "Hopefully, if everything goes right with my flights, I'll get there and get situated and then be ready to play against the Celtics," Shakur told FanHouse. FanHouse.com |

Some options include bringing back Hudson, signing free agent Jannero Pargo or Patrick Beverley, or plucking from the NBA Developmental League Mustafa Shakur or Kyle Weaver. But Wall is anxious to get back on the floor and assume his undisputed position within the team. "I've got to be the leader," Wall said. "I've got to get here early, I got to be the last one to leave. I've got to speak up, talk in huddles. They are gong to hold me accountable for more things. I'm going to accept the challenge."
