From the earliest days of the fabled Zarko Paspalj era in the late 1980s, the Spurs have been at the forefront of international scouting. No surprise, then, that they once again have the most players born outside the continental United States, breaking their own NBA record with 10: Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands), Manu Ginobili (Argentina), Tony Parker (France, by way of Belgium), Tiago Splitter (Brazil), Boris Diaw (France), Marco Belinelli (Italy), Nando De Colo (France), Patty Mills (Australia), Cory Joseph (Canada), Aron Baynes (Australia, by way of New Zealand). "We tried to do our best to make him feel welcome," Diaw says. A process, Diaw reveals, which included fetching a regular supply of donuts. Not quite the haute cuisine their motherland is renowned for. De Colo persisted, settled into Texas life, had his eyes opened by the all-consuming pampering offered to NBA players. He had been told what to expect by Parker, and from regular talks with Florent Pietrus, his teammate in Valencia whose younger brother Mickael has bounced around five teams, most recently with Toronto last season. "He told me how different it was from Europe. And he was right. When you are in San Antonio it's so professional." He didn't have to carry his own luggage, fetch his own drinks. Sacre bleu! "Everybody is here to help you. Everybody is here to do what you need." ESPN.com

Nando De Colo: "The worst is that it is one of the assistants that tells me that I'm in a suit as if it was normal, but it will be before anything happened. The morning of the game, I was leaving after the shoot around and he said "Nando, okay? Tonight you're in a suit." You say shit. You do not know what happened. You're in a new series. You wonder why you, and not another. It is not obvious at all. At first you think it is a game or two. Assistants tell you that things can change and, in fact, nothing changes. But that's coaching decisions. As it gets, there is not much to say." ProjectSpurs.com

In any event, Nando was clear, he does not have any regrets coming to the NBA desite being buried on the bench. "No. You do not know as you have not tried. Next year I'm under contract with San Antonio, and there is no reflection or having to say "I'm going back to Europe." I will continue to work. We'll see with the Spurs if something must be done after the playoffs or not. It's frustrating not to play but there is nothing more to think." ProjectSpurs.com
