The Clippers' discussions about making a run at James or Anthony have been internal thus far; however, sources said the team has engaged in trade discussions this spring with the Orlando Magic regarding shooting guard Arron Afflalo. Those conversations were initially rebuffed by the Magic, who didn't like the package of assets the Clippers could offer, sources said. However, there was some sense the clubs could revisit those talks later if they morphed into a three-team discussion. ESPN.com

The Clippers have coveted former UCLA star Afflalo for several years, coming close to trading for him last summer before the deal -- which included Eric Bledsoe and Caron Butler -- was shut down by owner Donald Sterling, sources said. Sterling has since been banned for life from the NBA for racist comments. ESPN.com

Of the offers they've received, a source says the Cavs aren't enamored by either the Sixers' offer (Thaddeus Young and the No. 3 pick) nor the Jazz's offer (Derrick Favors and the No. 5 pick). However, the Cavs do have some interest in the Magic's offer of Arron Afflalo, the No. 4 pick and the No. 12 pick. ESPN.com

The Magic have also been trying to both move up and get another lottery pick. They've offered Nos. 4 and 12 and Afflalo to the Cavs and Bucks, but so far, no takers. They've also used Afflalo as bait to get a pick from the Kings at No. 8 and the Nuggets at 11, but so far, no deal. ESPN.com

Saturday’s news that the Bulls have engaged the Magic in trade talks for veteran swingman Arron Afflalo did little to change their goal of aggressively trying to overhaul the roster. League sources said targeting Afflalo, who averaged a career-high 18.2 points on 45.9 percent shooting last season, serves two purposes. It signals to primary target Carmelo Anthony the win-now mentality the Bulls must have with Joakim Noah turning 30 next February and Derrick Rose coming off back-to-back knee surgeries. Chicago is open to moving one of its first-round picks, and a league source confirmed the club has had conversations with Orlando about a trade for Arron Afflalo. It would take a major shakeup -- amnestying or trading Carlos Boozer and trading Taj Gibson -- but the Bulls are well-positioned to make room for a much bigger catch: Knicks free agent Carmelo Anthony. Joel Embiid had a stress fracture of his back only three months ago and last Friday underwent surgery on his right foot to repair a broken bone. There might not be two worse injuries on a medical record for a 7-footer to enter the NBA with, meaning he’ll fall in Thursday’s draft. The Cavs would have taken him if he hadn’t required surgery on his foot, but now they aren’t going to touch him at No. 1 unless it’s to trade him. One team that sounds very interested in Embiid is Utah, at No. 5. The Jazz can put together a package including Enes Kanter, a future No. 1 and their pick and probably get Embid. It might take even less, considering Embiid’s first season could be a waste due to his latest injury. At No. 4, the Magic can put together a package featuring Aaron Afflalo or Tobias Harris plus its pick. New York Daily News
