The Toronto Raptors announced Monday they have acquired guard Greivis Vasquez (GRAY-vis VASS-kezs), guard-forward John Salmons (SAL-mons), and forwards Chuck Hayes and Patrick Patterson from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for forwards Rudy Gay and Quincy Acy and centre Aaron Gray. “We thank Rudy, Aaron and Quincy for their time here. They were great professionals and strong community ambassadors of the Raptors,” said Raptors President and General Manager Masai Ujiri. “The trade gives us good flexibility and more certainty as we plan for our future.” Raptors.com

The Toronto Raptors have agreed to send small forward Rudy Gay to the Sacramento Kings in a seven-player deal, a person with knowledge of the trade confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. While the Kings are expected to receive Gay, center Aaron Gray, and small forward Quincy Acy, the Raptors made a major move to clear up their salary cap situation by landing small forward John Salmons, point guard Greivis Vasquez, power forward Patrick Patterson and power forward Chuck Hayes. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been finalized. USA Today Sports

The Raptors and Gay had become increasingly unhappy with each other, league sources said, and Gay's contract was an obstacle to the franchise's desire to begin the rebuilding process. Gay is making $17.8 million this year, and holds a player option for $19.3 million for the 2014-15 season. The forward will almost assuredly exercise the option and take that salary next season. With Derrick Williams joining a Kings roster that already includes Carl Landry and Jason Thompson, two players signed through 2015-16, Patterson is expendable. For a team that needs frontcourt scoring help like a Toronto, Utah or Philadelphia, Patterson could be an attractive option. The question is what the Kings could get back. ESPN.com

The team also has to decide whether to pick up the option on Jimmer Fredette’s contract for the 2014-15 season. Vasquez and Patterson are eligible for contract extensions that would begin with the 2014-15 season and could sign for as many as five years. The Kings could opt not to sign either player and make them qualifying offers after the season and make them restricted free agents. “We’re still looking at things and evaluating before making a decision,” said general manager Pete D’Alessandro. “… I think there’s some spirited conversations going on about all the guys near the deadline.” Sacramento Bee
