HoopsHype Quincy Acy rumors

December 9, 2013 Updates

The Toronto Raptors announced Monday they have acquired guard Greivis Vasquez (GRAY-vis VASS-kezs), guard-forward John Salmons (SAL-mons), and forwards Chuck Hayes and Patrick Patterson from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for forwards Rudy Gay and Quincy Acy and centre Aaron Gray. “We thank Rudy, Aaron and Quincy for their time here. They were great professionals and strong community ambassadors of the Raptors,” said Raptors President and General Manager Masai Ujiri. “The trade gives us good flexibility and more certainty as we plan for our future.” Raptors.com

When news leaked out Sunday night that Gay and forward Quincy Acy were being sent to Sacramento for a quartet of role players, none of whom come with booby-trapped contracts, reaction around the league was incredulous. “Doesn’t Sacramento watch the games?” said one long-time league executive. The Toronto Raptors have agreed to send small forward Rudy Gay to the Sacramento Kings in a seven-player deal, a person with knowledge of the trade confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. While the Kings are expected to receive Gay, center Aaron Gray, and small forward Quincy Acy, the Raptors made a major move to clear up their salary cap situation by landing small forward John Salmons, point guard Greivis Vasquez, power forward Patrick Patterson and power forward Chuck Hayes. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been finalized. USA Today Sports

The Raptors and Gay had become increasingly unhappy with each other, league sources said, and Gay's contract was an obstacle to the franchise's desire to begin the rebuilding process. Gay is making $17.8 million this year, and holds a player option for $19.3 million for the 2014-15 season. The forward will almost assuredly exercise the option and take that salary next season. Acy’s role? Be a rookie and learn how it is to play against bigger, stronger men. Yes, he seems to be quite energetic and willing to work hard and is now going to be facing grownups on a regular basis. I would be quite surprised if, as a rookie, he cracks the regular frontcourt rotation. Today I’d have him sixth after Valanciunas, Bargnani, Davis, Johnson and Aaron Gray. Toronto Star

But don't take his word for it. Listen to the players themselves, who told their own version of events on Twitter after Gaskins spoke. Young Sun Kendall Marshall said "I'm turnin my playa card in." Blazer top pick Damian Lillard declared: "This man @TonyGaskins is too real. Y'all need to get up on him. He just changed my life. #realrap" Harrison Barnes, Darius Johnson-Odom, Draymond Green, Jared Sullinger, Andre Drummond and Quincy Acy all tweeted similarly. ESPN.com
