The Memphis Grizzlies signed guard/forward Quincy Pondexter to a contract extension, the team announced. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Pondexter (6-6, 225) led the Grizzlies in three-point field goal percentage (career-high .395) in 59 games (one start) last season and also averaged career highs with 6.4 points and 2.2 rebounds in 21.1 minutes. He made 60 three-pointers last season after recording a total of 40 threes over his first two NBA seasons. NBA.com

The initial results will have plenty to say about Pondexter asking Miss Tennessee for a date on Twitter last spring when the Grizzlies’ playoff run ended. Miss Tennessee said “yes,” but they never went on a date. Pondexter departed for his native California the next day so their schedules didn’t mesh. “It wasn’t like she was going out there or I was coming back here anytime soon,” Pondexter said. “But we’re good friends. She’s a beautiful girl.” Pondexter finds it a bit amusing that internet searches mostly recognize his game off the court. “At least I’m known for something,” Pondexter said, laughing. “It wasn’t like it was a bad thing. I actually need to try my luck again and see if I can get another girl to say ‘yes’ on Twitter. I was thinking Miley Cyrus.” Memphis Commercial Appeal

The team is led at the top of the rotation by Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph and Mike Conley, while veteran forward Tony Allen serves as one of the lead dogs in the locker room. But for the team to take the next step, Joerger believes the growth will need to come from the team’s younger role players. “For us to grow from within Jerryd Bayless needs to have a nice season for us,” Joerger says. “Quincy Pondexter needs to have a nice season for us. Those guys need to make shots from the perimeter and for that to happen they’re going to have to be on the floor and be consistent.” HoopsWorld

Nick Young saw what tweeting at a beauty queen did for Quincy Pondexter, so he decided to try his luck employing the same strategy. Pondexter, a guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, was able to score a date with Miss Tennessee Chandler Lawson by hollering at her over Twitter this week. During a guest appearance on ESPN’s “SportsNation” on Thursday, Young was asked whether Pondexter’s move was “desperate” or “smooth.” “Smooth, smooth,” the Philadelphia 76ers guard insisted. “[The Memphis Grizzlies] just made it to the Western Conference finals. They’re on TV. He is the man right now. Gotta strike when you hot right there!” Young, a Los Angeles native, then said he was going to try it out, too. He looked into the camera and said, “Miss California, holla at me!” Larry Brown Sports
