Automatically retired players do not come off the salary cap, so it's up to the team and player to determine a settlement that will count against the cap. The Celtics had that with Rasheed Wallace, who retired two years before his contract expired. It would be the same situation with Garnett should he retire with two years left on his deal. Also, there is the misconception that the Celtics Would have the option to buy out Pierce's contract and then re-sign him to a deal reduced. When a team waives a player, as the Celtics would have to do with Pierce, it is ineligible to sign him for one year. Boston Globe |

![]() After Rasheed Wallace retired from the NBA (for the second time) in mid-April, because of a nagging left foot injury, he hung around the team as a player adviser and traveled to road games. While Mike Woodson, a big supporter of Wallace, seems amiable to keeping Sheed in a similar role, the 38-year-old told ESPNNewYork.com he hasn't decided yet on his Knicks future. "Right now, I don't know," said Wallace, who will maintain his New York residence during the offseason. "It's still a long summer; it's just getting started. Right now, it's family time -- just being with my kids." ESPN.com |

The effect of retired players on the salary cap - which could eats into play with Kevin Garnett - is not uniform in the new collective bargaining agreement, meaning how it impacts a team's cap is undetermined until a buyout or settlement is negotiated. The Celtics had a situation like with Rasheed Wallace, who retired with two years remaining on his contract. He and the Celtics agreed to a buyout so the final two years of his contract would not impact the salary cap. The buyout amount, however it, does affect the cap. Boston Globe |

Rasheed Wallace appears to be close to returning to the Knicks’ lineup. Before Sunday’s game against the Indiana Pacers, Coach Mike Woodson said Wallace could play as early as Monday’s road game against the Charlotte Bobcats. New York Times ![]() Rasheed Wallace could play for the first time since mid-December tomorrow when the Knicks visit Charlotte, Mike Woodson said. Wallace, who had foot surgery in late February, is significantly ahead of schedule. Wallace was on the court running today on the Garden floor before they faced the Pacers in an attempt to clinch the second seed and draw No. 7 Boston. According to Woodson, Wallace will make the determination if he is ready for a cameo vs. Charlotte. At the worst, Woodson would like to play him vs. Atlanta in the season finale. New York Post |

![]() According to Thomas, even Rasheed Wallace—he of the NBA-record technical-foul tally—has a slight desire to coach someday. Wallace, who has been injured and is usually unavailable in the locker room, couldn't be reached for comment. "These guys have all played a major role somewhere for some team," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said of his veterans, mentioning Thomas, Kidd, Wallace, Prigioni and Marcus Camby by name, although Camby doesn't sound interested in coaching. "We obviously did our homework [in acquiring the players], but they've been so much more than we ever expected." Wall Street Journal |

The Knicks soon may make a hard decision on cutting either Thomas or Rasheed Wallace, who had foot surgery and seems a long shot to make it back. That would open up a roster spot for a big man, probably one out of the D-League. The Knicks will stand pat for now and see how the healing goes with Thomas and Wallace, who is to have stitches taken out of his foot this week. The Knicks still believe Amar’e Stoudemire, who had knee surgery nine days ago, can make it back for the playoffs. Thomas had been playing for several years with a stress fracture and now it has been re-aggravated. Dr. Anish Kadakia, a leading orthopedic foot surgeon at Northwestern Hospital, told The Post because this is not a new stress fracture, it can get better within a month. New York Post |

But when Woodson was asked if he has reconsidering waiving Wallace, a player he convinced to come out of two-year retirement, the head coach said: "I don't know where that came from. That was you guys (in the media). I never made that statement about waiving Rasheed. Rasheed still has a chance to bounce back as well but again as we go up this road we've just got to wait and see. "Are these guys able to come back for us? I don't know what the process is in terms of being able to add another roster spot. I haven't really looked into that." New York Daily News |
