The Lakers signed the former UC Santa Barbara player to a non-guaranteed contract Wednesday and extended an invitation to training camp as the team fills out the margins of its roster for practice purposes. Like former UCLA forward Reeves Nelson, whom the Lakers also signed as expected Wednesday, Somogyi is the longest of longshots to make the team. Somogyi went undrafted after averaging 3.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 12.2 minutes during his four seasons with the Gauchos. Los Angeles Times

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed rookie center Greg Somogyi and rookie forward Reeves Nelson, it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not released. Somogyi, a 7-3 center out of UC Santa Barbara, played all four years for the Gauchos where he posted career averages of 3.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 12.2 minutes. Somogyi most recently played for the 2012 Lakers Summer League team where he averaged 1.2 points, 1.6 rebounds in 7.2 minutes. NBA.com

Former UCLA forward Reeves Nelson will be invited to the Lakers training camp that begins in early October after he signs a one-year, non-guaranteed contract, potentially worth about $700,000 with the team, Nelson told The Times on Tuesday. Los Angeles Times

Nelson would probably be considered a long shot to make the Lakers. But he considers the training camp invitation to be a blessing, particularly because he was dismissed from UCLA in December of 2011, largely for his disruptive attitude. “I'm very grateful,” Nelson said. “It's nice because I'm pretty sure that virtually no one thought I could get this far, so it's pretty gratifying.” Los Angeles Times

Former UCLA basketball player Reeves Nelson filed a $10-million defamation lawsuit against Sports Illustrated on Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The lawsuit stems from an article ("Special Report: Not the UCLA Way") published in March in which Nelson was portrayed as a bully who mistreated former Bruins teammates. Los Angeles Times

UCLA Coach Ben Howland said the potential of an NBA lockout would influence his advice to Bruins players deciding whether to declare for the draft, intimating that it might lead him to encourage them to return to college. "I can tell you in the NBA, in my opinion, this is going to be a serious lockout," Howland said Tuesday. "They will not be playing, in my opinion, next December and maybe even January. … You're not even going to get paid next year for half the year." FOX 43

Howland said he expected to meet with junior Malcolm Lee and sophomores Tyler Honeycutt and Reeves Nelson as soon as Monday to discuss their futures. College underclassmen have until April 24 to declare for the draft and can withdraw by May 8 to retain amateur eligibility, as long as they do not hire an agent. Lee's ability to work out for NBA teams during the two-week window may be compromised after he underwent surgery Tuesday to repair damage to his left knee sustained this month. FOX 43
