I wish Hollinger all the best of luck. Truly a nice, congenial guy. I believe being on the business side of a team will be eye-opening for him because he sometimes wrote and said things about the game and the league that came off as naive. His hire reflects the wave of analytics-driven, fantasy-league- raised owners that have entered the NBA. Hollinger speaks their language and these owners are convinced that they know basketball because they know numbers. I have yet to see an analytics-driven team win a title or even exceed expectations. Quietly, ESPN and longtime NBA reporter Ric Bucher parted ways last month. A fixture on Sportscenter, and ESPN.com for much of the last decade (and ESPN the Magazine, to a much lesser extent), Bucher’s contract ended recently and his new gig is as a radio host on 95.7 The Game in San Francisco. The Big Lead It’s been a busy few weeks for ESPN on the NBA front. The network revamped its NBA show, ESPN Countdown, and sources also say ESPN tried to hire Yahoo NBA columnist Adrian Wojnarowski to beef up its basketball reporting. (He’s not the first Yahoo writer ESPN has tried to acquire – 11 months ago, the WWL nearly poached Charles Robinson.) A source says Wojnarowski decided to stay at Yahoo. The Executive Editor of Yahoo Sports, Bob Condor, didn’t return a call seeking comment. The Big Lead Earlier this month, Bucher announced he was joining a social media training firm in Portland. In a brief phone conversation with Bucher, he said there’s a chance he could return to ESPN as an independent contractor beginning January 1. The Big Lead |

A few hours after Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Dwight Howard could be headed to the Lakers in a blockbuster 4-team deal, ESPN’s Ric Bucher went on ESPN radio in LA and was asked about the potential trade. Bucher proceeded to take a massive dump on Wojnarowski’s report. The Big Lead Bucher: “This trade has about as much of a chance as the previous 531 [trade rumors]. I know Dwight Howard is a hot topic, and I know that everyone is hot and bothered to get this story over with, but … and I’ll ask you guys … I’m always a little leery when talks are serious, but we don’t know who is going where.” The Big Lead |
