Minnesota Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio may miss as many as 7-8 weeks with a badly sprained left ankle, a person familiar with the injury told USA TODAY Sports. The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the injury. Rubio sustained the injury in Friday's game against the Orlando Magic after landing awkwardly on a drive to the basket with 2:28 left in the second quarter. The team said he'd be out indefinitely with a significant sprain. USA Today Sports

"There was no question it was like someone popped a balloon when Ricky got hurt," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said after the 112-103 loss. "Ricky has been kind of our leader; he's been the heart of our team." While Saunders said the X-ray didn't reveal a break, he expressed concern that it could be a high ankle sprain—which can require several weeks of recovery. "He popped it pretty good," Saunders said. I asked Rubio what advice he has given Wiggins after coming over from Spain as the youngest player to play in the Spanish ACB League at 14. “It’s hard when you had all the hype and you have a couple of games where you don’t – I wouldn’t say respond, but if people don’t – see numbers because in this league it’s all about numbers,” Rubio replied. “Maybe you had six points, but you had a great game. It’s something that he had to understand. He had to feel good if he gave everything on the court. It’s something that he had to respect the process. It’s not going to come and score 20 or 25 points a game. That’s only something LeBron or Carmelo can do as a rookie. I think he’s been good so far knowing what to do to help the team.” SheridanHoops
