Players shouldn’t be blamed for injuries. That’s normally out of their control. But the fact remains: Rubio hasn’t proven that he can stay healthy or that he can shoot well enough to be considered a reliable offensive threat. Those two roadblocks continue to stunt his development at a time when the NBA is stacked with elite point guards. That’s the league’s best and deepest position, and Rubio acknowledged in a recent conversation that his shooting has prevented him from joining that next tier of point guards. “I have confidence in me,” he said. “I think I can be great in this league. To do that, I need to improve a lot on my shot.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio has been on the verge of returning to games for about a week, but the team's medical staff has kept him out, coach Flip Saunders said. "All they're saying is he's not ready to play at the level that he needs to play at right now," Saunders said. St. Paul Pioneer Press

Ricky Rubio's first game with Kevin Garnett was not Garnett's return to the Timberwolves at Target Center on Feb. 25. The first time they shared the court came in Los Angeles during the 2011-12, lockout-shortened season. "I was kind of scared, but he was on my team, so that was good," Rubio said. "Sometimes he was on the other team, and I didn't even look at him. I was scared. He was talking trash even in a pickup game." As labor-management issues were being resolved, Rubio and Garnett were in L.A. to stay in shape along with fellow NBA players such as Paul Pierce, Reggie Jackson and others. Garnett's first impression of Rubio was his high intelligence on the court. St. Paul Pioneer Press

Saunders acquired Garnett to push Wiggins, LaVine and others on professionalism and defense, an effort that began with Garnett's first practice the day before. Garnett arrived 90 minutes early, before any other player, and his intensity startled his new teammates. Twice, Garnett yelled at veteran center Nikola Pekovic for not getting back on defense. "He yelled at a couple of young guys, too," said guard Ricky Rubio. "I don't know how to do it yet. I'm too nice. So I hope he teaches me that bad side." USA Today Sports
