HoopsHype Rodney Stuckey + Trade rumors

February 16, 2014 Updates

The trade deadline is 3 p.m. Thursday, less than 24 hours after the Charlotte back-to-back. The Pistons have several potential trade pieces with Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva approaching unrestricted free agency, and Greg Monroe restricted free agency this summer. They have rebuffed Monroe talks and need Stuckey for the stretch. Villanueva could have value if the Pistons are willing to take on a longer-term contract. It's more likely that the Pistons don't make a major deal and Loyer said he made it clear that the postseason objective remains unchanged during his first meeting with the team after replacing Cheeks last weekend. Despite persistent national media rumors that Greg Monroe is a potential trade piece because of his restricted free agency this summer, the Pistons have shown no interest in trading him. They also have Charlie Villanueva and Rodney Stuckey on expiring contracts, but their position all season has been that those players have value whether they're traded or simply relinquished to free up money this summer. They make more than $17 million combined. Gores said the trade deadline is not a central focus. Booth Newspapers

And if the Pistons decide Stuckey isn't part of their future plans, they could deal him and receive something in return rather than letting him walk at the end of his seventh season in Detroit. But Stuckey says none of that is on his mind with the Feb. 20 trade deadline looming. "Nah, I don't think about that," Stuckey said Monday after scoring a season-high 29 points in a 112-103 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. "Whatever happens, happens. I'm here to play basketball. I'm a Detroit Piston right now. God is going to lead me in the right direction. "I have no control over that. My agent will take care of that. It's up to the organization, what they want to do and what they're looking at. I don't think about it at all. I just try to come out every night and compete and try to win." Booth Newspapers

Victor Oladipo is clearly the future in Orlando, and Nelson could be a viable option for a contender looking to solidify its point-guard play. Nelson is almost 32, but has only $2 million guaranteed in 2014-15 and thus is a good rental candidate. Side note: Another veteran who's been the subject of trade rumors is Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey. But a league source says the Pistons "are not trading [him]." So there you go. CBSSports.com

The name most people talk about is big man Greg Monroe, but the more likely trade chips are the ending contracts of Rodney Stuckey ($8.5 million) and Charlie Villanueva ($8.5 million). Of the two, Stuckey clearly has more trade appeal and at the deadline Detroit will have paid the bulk of Stuckey’s deal. HoopsWorld

Being enamored with Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo isn’t anything new for the Pistons, but the two sides aren’t likely to embark on a trade any time soon. The Boston Globe reported the Pistons offered guard Brandon Knight and an expiring contract — either Rodney Stuckey or Charlie Villanueva, as cap relief — for Rondo, who’s recovering from an ACL tear. The Celtics would want Andre Drummond, who’s obviously not available and won’t be, and the Pistons want to see how the frontcourt of Drummond, Greg Monroe and Josh Smith play together before making any deals to drastically alter their foundation. If the Pistons can off-load Rodney Stuckey and his $8.5 million team option for next season or Charlie Villanueva and his $8.5 million team option for next season before the trade deadline they could add to that number significantly. League sources peg Stuckey as the easiest chip to move and there is a belief that Detroit is more than open to a deal involving one or both. HoopsWorld
