The people were granted anonymity because the process isn’t public. Roberts, if chosen, would become the first woman to lead the players union in any of the four major North American sports leagues. Members of the union’s executive committee, including President Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers and First Vice President Roger Mason Jr., in a press conference after their meeting declined to name the candidates or how many there are. “The NBPA will now implement a program that will allow players around the country to consider final candidates, discuss their merits internally, and convey their views to player representatives,” Paul said. The decision to keep Beasley was easier, with him being a daily contributor. Releasing Mason would have cleared a roster spot if the Heat had any interest in free agent Andrew Bynum, who reportedly narrowed his choices to the Heat and Los Angeles Clippers. By making no changes, Mason has the chance to continue "a great opportunity" as he hopes to be part of a championship team. When he signed last September, he "decided to come here for the long haul." It seems the Heat are poised to guarantee the remainder of guard Roger Mason Jr.'s contract. The deadline is Tuesday, but Spoelstra spoke confidently about Mason being on the roster for the rest of the season. "We don't take him for granted or other players like that off the bench," Spoelstra said. "Roger, now, is gaining more confidence each game that he plays with our system. Those kind of guys are hard to find. They really are. To be able to sacrifice, to understand the big picture, to be available when we need him and to be able to produce and not be cluttered in the mind, I think a lot of teams would like to have a guy like him or some of the other guys we have." The latest was broadcast to the world on Monday morning, again via LeBron James' Instagram account, with 15 players holding the gift each had been given by another teammate. How did this "Secret Santa" come about? "I was one of the culprits," James said prior to Monday's game against the Utah Jazz. "I never take full credit for anything, but I was definitely one of the ones. It was something we did when I was in Cleveland as well. I thought it was a pretty good thing to do. We had success for the first time." A couple of weeks ago, all 15 players drew a name out of a hat. "You had to get to know something about your teammate, and get a nice gift," Roger Mason Jr. said. With one rule. "There was a limit on price," James said. "You couldn't go below a certain number." Bleacher Report

It's pretty obvious after Monday night that Roger Mason Jr. is making the team as the Heat's third point guard. Mason scored 14 points off the bench and played more minutes (27) than anyone in the Heat's first game of the preseason. The Heat defeated the Hawks 92-87. “He’s a great fit,” said James of Mason. “He’s just a solid basketball player that knows how to play the game. He’s a combo guard who can spread the floor but also handle the ball, he doesn’t make any mistakes and he fits right in.” Miami Herald
