The Pelicans assigned rookie point guard Russ Smith to the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Mad Ants of the NBA Development League to gain more playing time, the franchise announced Friday. Smith has played in just three of the Pelicans’ first 17 games and averaged 3.7 minutes and 0.0 points. Still, Smith doesn't appear overwhelmed like most rookies. He also doesn't shy away from admitting mistakes. When asked what happened in the Atlanta game that caused Williams to yell at him, he honed up to his mistake. ''I knew the play that he had told me,'' said Smith, who has averaged 6.6 points and 0.6 assists so far in the preseason. ''He was yelling something that I didn't hear and I had ran something totally different. It was a miscommunication on my part. I wasn't paying attention.'' New Orleans Times-Picayune

Rather than try and strike a deal to get jersey No. 2 from Miller, which is what players often do, Smith has opted to instead wear the number worn by one of his favorite players. “I got a chance to know Rajon and follow him my sophomore year. I'm a big fan of his game," Smith told WDRB-41 in Louisville, Kentucky. "When coach (former Celtics coach and current Louisville head coach Rick Pitino) asked me to watch film of point guards, he (Rondo) was one of the first people that I watched, along with Steve Nash, to help me prepare for my senior season.” Smith said as much in June when he was in town to work out for the Celtics. "Believe it or not, he's actually my favorite point guard," Smith said at the time. "I'm a score-first guy and been a score-first guy my whole life. But I like his poise, the way he gets into the lane. He's able to find people and the way he's able to pass the ball ... a lot of people can't do that." CSNNE.com

Before introducing center Omer Asik on Tuesday, the New Orleans Pelicans announced they had extended point guard Russ Smith a rookie-scaled contract. The Pelicans did not release the financial details of the contract or its length, but a league source confirmed that Smith agreed to a two-year guaranteed contract with an option for a third year. Also, the Pelicans have reportedly reached an agreement to extend rookie power forward Patric Young a two-year contract. New Orleans Times-Picayune

New Orleans Pelicans rookie point guard Russ Smith apparently has been impressive enough in summer league mini camp practices this week that he's been extended a guaranteed contract offer. In an audio recording posted on the University of Louisville's official athletic website, Cardinals coach Rick Pitino said Smith has a guaranteed contract committed from the Pelicans. New Orleans acquired Smith in a draft night trade last month from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for the draft rights of guard Pierre Jackson, who suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon injury last week in the Orlando Pro Summer League. On Tuesday, the Raptors worked out Louisville guard Russ Smith, Arizona guard Nick Johnson, Missouri guard Jordan Clarkson, Buffalo forward Javon McCrea and Gonzaga forward San Dower. Afterward, Raptors director of scouting Dan Tolzman, who Masai Ujiri hired shortly after he took over as general manager last year, spoke with the media on those players and the entire draft, which he has been scouting all year long. On impressions of the draft as a whole: “It’s great. It’s extremely talented this year. I think … it’s a very good draft to have three [picks]. We’re kind of all across the board, too, at 20, 37 and 59. There is going to be a player on the board at all of those picks.” National Post
