Utah State basketball player Danny Berger is recovering after collapsing at practice Wednesday and going into cardiac arrest. Berger has been slowly upgraded over the last two days and is now listed as in “fair” condition. However, if it weren’t for current German basketball player Ryan Gomes, Berger might not be here. Gomes, a New England native and alumnus of Providence College, played two seasons for the Celtics, from 2005 to 2007. His NBA career continued for five more years with the Timberwolves and Clippers. Gomes has also partnered with a charity called Hoops for Heart Health, which is where Berger comes in. NESN.com

Gomes once saw a teammate pass away during a game, an event that may have been prevented had a defibrillator been available. Since then, Gomes and the charity have been donating defibrillators to teams and recreational centers around the country. In fact, the defibrillator that helped save Berger’s life was one directly donated by Gomes, according to USUStats.com The Hoops for Heart Health website contains a message from Gomes that reads in part: “If we can save just one life, it makes all of our efforts worthwhile.” NESN.com

He remains optimistic and views Leandro Barbosa‘s late signing with the Boston Celtics and Eddy Curry signing with Dallas just days before the start of the season as hope that he’ll, too, soon find a new home. “Ultimately, I have to stay ready, which I am, as far as in the gym, and stay positive,” Howard said. “I don’t think my career’s over.” Other notable players still looking for a team: Guards: Derek Fisher, Gilbert Arenas (in talks with Chinese team), Baron Davis, Earl Boykins, Mickael Pietrus, Michael Redd, Maurice Evans, Jason Kapono. Forwards/Centers: Kenyon Martin, Shawne Williams, Quentin Richardson, Bobby Simmons, Bill Walker, Jamario Moon, Renaldo Balkman, Ryan Gomes, Troy Murphy, Josh Powell, Derrick Caracter, Ben Wallace, Greg Oden, Sean Williams, Tony Battie, Mehmet Okur. The Clippers are trying to work out a sign and trade with the Phoenix Suns, but if they can't agree to a trade Hill will likely sign for the Clippers' $1.9 million bi-annual exception, sources said. Backup forward Ryan Gomes, who is due to make $4 million in the final year of his contract, likely would be the player headed to Phoenix in a sign-and-trade agreement. ESPN.com

Gomes, admittedly, has been struggling of late. Take away the time he scored 11 points in a January 20th loss to the Timberwolves (missing two-thirds of his shots in the process), he's managed just six points in his last 100 minutes of actions spread out over seven games. That's incredible, and just as unfortunate, and some jerkball Clipper fans (who probably couldn't pick Loy Vaught out of a lineup) decided to go after the guy's wife on Twitter. She responded, as you'll see after the jump, with some NSFW retorts on her Twitter account: Yahoo! Sports

The Los Angeles Clippers won’t let the lockout interrupt their development. Last week, the young team held a minicamp in Los Angeles that lasted four days and included ten players. Blake Griffin and Mo Williams organized the workouts. Eric Gordon, Eric Bledsoe, DeAndre Jordan, Randy Foye, Ryan Gomes, Trey Thompkins, Travis Leslie, and Brian Cook were among the players in attendance. The players worked out for several hours each day and then spent time together off the court once the training sessions concluded. The team is improving their chemistry on and off the floor, and the workouts gave the two rookies, Thompkins and Leslie, an opportunity to meet their new teammates. HoopsWorld

One scenario that rival execs believe still has validity is Andre Iguodala to the Clippers. The Sixers already have turned down the Clippers' offer of Chris Kaman and Ryan Gomes for Iguodala and Marreese Speights, and a person with knowledge of Philadelphia's stragegy said the Sixers are "not taking Kaman." It's not clear how willing the Clippers would be to give up a young asset for Iguodala. The better way to put it is, how much of an asset would it take to entice the Sixers to take Kaman, who only has one year and $12.2 million left on his contract. Iguodala is famously owed $44 million over the next three years. CBSSports.com
