The Los Angeles Lakers have signed free agent forward Ryan Kelly, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released. “When we extended a qualifying offer to Ryan in June, we fully expected him to be a part of our future,” said Kupchak. “Ryan did everything we asked of him as a rookie and showed great promise and potential. After rehabbing an injury last summer, he will have the benefit of a full offseason regimen and training camp for the first time in his NBA career, and we anticipate further development as a result.” NBA.com

The Lakers have until June 30 to decide if they’ll make 2013-14 rookie Ryan Kelly a restricted free agent. Kelly is coming off a season in which he performed above typical standards for a 48th pick in the Draft despite missing summer league and much of training camp recovering from a broken foot. Kelly and Marshall were in rare agreement last month when they both ribbed Lakers teammate and onetime Syracuse standout Wesley Johnson after Orange Coach Jim Boeheim ran onto the court to protest an official's call near the end of a loss to Duke, resulting in his ejection. "They asked if I had ever seen him get emotional like that," Johnson said, "and I said, 'A little bit, but not that much.'" Los Angeles Times

"Ryan was not in any dire straits or crazy rock bottom scenario, but like the majority of 20-year olds, their intake of sugar and processed, refined carbohydrates is higher than it should be or we want it to be," DiFrancesco said. "That typically goes hand-in-hand. Your body is addicted to having that food source in that amount. That goes back around to our grass-fed approach. Part of adding good fats is animal proteins from pasture- or grass-fed sources. Ryan grasped the whole thing immediately and he was willing to take the steps and follow through with them. It's absolutely no surprise to me that he's seeing the progress." NBA.com

That patience has yielded results, in part because of Kelly's new diet, plus his work ethic. He enjoys eating pieces of bacon by the dozen now, something that is a good part of his diet, along with Alive and Radiant Cheezy Kale Chips, which have antioxidants, good for fighting inflammation. He drinks mostly water, but also likes coffee with organic butter. Kelly has felt the positive effects of changing his eating habits, and his play has shown. In the last four games, he is averaging 14.8 points and 5.8 rebounds on 51.4 percent field goals. "It takes some time, but I've started to feel the effects of having longer lasting energy," Kelly said. "We're about 36 games in (as of Jan. 9) and that's what the college season will be like. I haven't played as many minutes early (with the Lakers), but I was doing the D-League, and I feel fine. I think if I had been going down that same diet route I was, I probably would have been breaking down. I guess you can't say for sure, but that's what I'd venture to guess." NBA.com

Williams was cut because he was brought on to stretch the floor at the forward spot but shot only 37.7%. The Lakers also like the potential of rookie forward Ryan Kelly. "[Williams] did everything we asked of him and he did well," Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni said. "It's just with the injuries and to be able to keep flexibility and be able to look at different areas we may have to shore up, it's something we felt like we had to do." Williams, 27, averaged 5.2 points and 4.5 rebounds and started 11 games. He would have made about $1 million this season. Los Angeles Times
