The Lakers have until June 30 to decide if they’ll make 2013-14 rookie Ryan Kelly a restricted free agent. Kelly is coming off a season in which he performed above typical standards for a 48th pick in the Draft despite missing summer league and much of training camp recovering from a broken foot. Kelly and Marshall were in rare agreement last month when they both ribbed Lakers teammate and onetime Syracuse standout Wesley Johnson after Orange Coach Jim Boeheim ran onto the court to protest an official's call near the end of a loss to Duke, resulting in his ejection. "They asked if I had ever seen him get emotional like that," Johnson said, "and I said, 'A little bit, but not that much.'" Los Angeles Times

"Ryan was not in any dire straits or crazy rock bottom scenario, but like the majority of 20-year olds, their intake of sugar and processed, refined carbohydrates is higher than it should be or we want it to be," DiFrancesco said. "That typically goes hand-in-hand. Your body is addicted to having that food source in that amount. That goes back around to our grass-fed approach. Part of adding good fats is animal proteins from pasture- or grass-fed sources. Ryan grasped the whole thing immediately and he was willing to take the steps and follow through with them. It's absolutely no surprise to me that he's seeing the progress." NBA.com

That patience has yielded results, in part because of Kelly's new diet, plus his work ethic. He enjoys eating pieces of bacon by the dozen now, something that is a good part of his diet, along with Alive and Radiant Cheezy Kale Chips, which have antioxidants, good for fighting inflammation. He drinks mostly water, but also likes coffee with organic butter. Kelly has felt the positive effects of changing his eating habits, and his play has shown. In the last four games, he is averaging 14.8 points and 5.8 rebounds on 51.4 percent field goals. "It takes some time, but I've started to feel the effects of having longer lasting energy," Kelly said. "We're about 36 games in (as of Jan. 9) and that's what the college season will be like. I haven't played as many minutes early (with the Lakers), but I was doing the D-League, and I feel fine. I think if I had been going down that same diet route I was, I probably would have been breaking down. I guess you can't say for sure, but that's what I'd venture to guess." NBA.com

Williams was cut because he was brought on to stretch the floor at the forward spot but shot only 37.7%. The Lakers also like the potential of rookie forward Ryan Kelly. "[Williams] did everything we asked of him and he did well," Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni said. "It's just with the injuries and to be able to keep flexibility and be able to look at different areas we may have to shore up, it's something we felt like we had to do." Williams, 27, averaged 5.2 points and 4.5 rebounds and started 11 games. He would have made about $1 million this season. Los Angeles Times

Four players are signed to nonguaranteed contracts: Xavier Henry, Shawne Williams, Ryan Kelly and recent acquisition Kendall Marshall. The Lakers have until Jan. 7 to decide which players they want to keep the rest of the season. The deadline is officially Jan. 10, but each player needs 48 hours to clear the NBA's waiver process. Henry was signed over the summer for $916,099 and has proved to be one of the team's best off-season acquisitions. Los Angeles Times

In Sunday night's 111-104 loss to the 76ers, Marshall helped spark an early fourth-quarter rally, finishing with eight points, three assists and two rebounds — all season highs. If Marshall lasts beyond the January deadline, his $547,570 for the current season will lock in. With all 15 players, the Lakers' team salary for the season is $91.4 million, including $12 million in luxury tax penalties. Los Angeles Times

In five appearances with the D-Fenders, Kelly averaged 25.2 points and 7.6 rebounds. General Manager "Mitch [Kupchak] and everybody has been great during that whole time period of getting me up and down" to the D-Fenders, said Kelly. "I was getting a lot of practice time with both teams." "Obviously you play a lot of minutes in games [with the D-Fenders], I haven't done that since college," he continued. "I hadn't played in games or really long scrimmages since the end of my senior season. That was tremendous helpful." Los Angeles Times

Not only will the Lakers get Kobe Bryant back Sunday night when they host the Toronto Raptors, but the team also recalled rookie forward Ryan Kelly from the D-Fenders. Kelly is one of the Development League's top scorers, averaging 25.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.6 steals in five games. Los Angeles Times
