Kelly's future with the Lakers could hinge in part on how many players the team decides to keep during the season; its roster can number between 13 and 15. General Manager Mitch Kupchak recently said ownership may be willing to keep 14 or 15 players because the team's payroll is down from last season. Los Angeles Times

Despite undergoing surgery in April, Kelly still isn't quite read to participate in the team's training camp, which kicked off on Saturday. "I've been medically cleared by the doctors," Kelly said. "Now we're just taking our time, obviously because I haven't been able to run fully for a while now." Ryan is running on the Lakers' Alter-G treadmill, which helps support a percentage of his body weight. "We're at 90% today," said Kelly on Saturday, running on all but 10% of his 230 pounds. "You've got to get to 100% before you're running on the court." Los Angeles Times

Kelly has already gone through plenty, having surgery in April to repair a screw that was initially inserted in his right foot in March 2012 to treat a broken bone. “Ryan has already done this twice. So this makes us want to take this really slowly and bring him back one step at at time,” Vitti said Thursday at the Lakers’ practice facility in El Segundo in a wide-ranging interview with this newspaper. “We want to make sure the screw is in there and the bone is healed around the screw.” Los Angeles Daily News

The Lakers have 12 players under contract and need to add another player to their roster before training camp starts on Sept. 27. The Lakers are expected to sign Ryan Kelly, who was drafted 48th overall out of Duke. But Kelly is currently rehabbing from foot surgery in April and it’s unclear when he’ll be fully healthy. The Lakers have also invited Marcus Landry to training camp after after leading the team’s summer league in scoring. Los Angeles Daily News

Don't discount the appeal of Beasley's ability to shoot it, either. The Lakers drafted Ryan Kelly in the second round primarily for his ability to stretch the floor with his long-range accuracy, but the team has been discouraged by the rookie's progress during the summer, according to multiple league sources. The Lakers doubt that Kelly, who missed summer league while recovering from multiple foot procedures, will be ready for the start of training camp. ESPN.com
