The Nets got good news about one of their injured small forwards yesterday, and bad news about the other. Shawne Williams went through vigorous workouts yesterday and is expected to return to the lineup for tonight’s game against the Bobcats after missing the last four games with shin splints. But the Nets have lost Damion James indefinitely, and he will undergo surgery on his right foot Tuesday to replace the screw he had inserted last year to help repair a fractured fifth metatarsal in the foot. “It’s disappointing,” coach Avery Johnson said before last night’s 84-74 loss to the Thunder. “Here’s a kid we drafted last year, we had him inked in as his starting three man and in the Eastern Conference … Hopefully the surgery will go well, and for us and him and his career, hopefully we can get this corrected and he won’t have a problem anymore.” New York Post

Shawne Williams was waiting anxiously in his hotel room last week to hear about his next destination — which boiled down to either the Knicks or the Nets — and apparently caught a bug so vicious it sabotaged his preseason. “It’s just like a flu, said the forward’s agent, Happy Walters. “He’ll be back and be ready.” New York Daily News

For Shawne Williams, it was just business. The former Knick said it was a difficult decision to jump to New Jersey, but after waiting for the Knicks to work their way down their free-agent check list, Williams said he chose the Nets simply because it was a better offer. “It was a hard decision, but I think it was the right decision for me and my career,” Williams said after his first practice with his new team in New Jersey on Friday. New York Daily News

It will be a weird transition for the formerly troubled forward, who resurrected his career last season. Avery Johnson said he expected Williams — despite having only one practice with New Jersey — to play Saturday when the Nets face the Knicks at the Rock in Newark in the first of two preseason games. “It’s a business. We get paid to play. I can’t look at the matchup, but it’s gonna be funny,” Williams said. “It’s going to be a weird feeling because it’s so fresh.” New York Daily News

With the $2.5-million "room exception'' now burning a hole in Glen Grunwald's pocket after the Knicks lost out on yet another free agent -- forward Shawne Williams opted to take more money from the Nets -- the next notable free-agent target for the Knicks is veteran sharpshooter Michael Redd . Though he is well-known for his shooting prowess, there is some risk with Redd because he is attempting to come back from major knee surgery. He missed 14 months before returning to the lineup with the Bucks late last March. He appeared in the final 10 games of the season, averaging only 4.4 points and shooting only 23.5 percent from three-point range. Newsday

(Shawne) Williams joined the Nets for a two-year deal worth $6.1 million — about $1 million more than the Knicks could offer under salary-cap rules. The Nets also offered Williams a greater role, having waived Travis Outlaw. “It came down to money and minutes,” said Williams’s agent, Happy Walters. New York Times

Williams, 25, who is a close friend of Amar’e Stoudemire, also felt slighted by the Knicks in recent days as they waited on Jamal Crawford’s decision and refused to make Williams an offer. It wasn’t until Crawford said no to the Knicks that they offered Williams their $2.5 million exception. The Nets were able to outbid the Knicks because they are under the salary cap and were desperate for a forward. Williams actually could start for New Jersey at the 3 position, whereas he would have had to fight for playing time in a crowded Knicks rotation. New York Post
