Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has signed free agent guards Shelvin Mack and Garrett Temple. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not released. Mack (6-3, 207) was originally selected by Washington with the 34th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. In 11 games this season with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA D-League, he has averaged 19.7 points (ranked sixth) and a D-League best 7.5 assists in 40.7 minutes per contest. He was named NBA D-League Performer of the Week on December 10. In 64 games during his rookie campaign with the Wizards, Mack averaged 3.6 points, 1.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 12.2 minutes per game. The former Butler Bulldog averaged 4.1 points in eight games during the 2012 preseason with Washington before being waived on October 28, 2012. NBA.com |

When his phone rang late Saturday night, Shelvin Mack had no idea it would be from the team that let him go just before training camp, the Washington Wizards. “They wanted to know where my head was and asked me if I would like to come back to the organization,” Mack said in a telephone interview Monday. Mack didn’t hesitate. “I said, ‘Sure, I’m grateful for the opportunity to come back,’” Mack said. Washington Times |

Shelvin Mack is returning to the organization that drafted him 34th overall out of Butler in 2011 and waived him before the start of his second season in order to go with more seasoned veteran, Jannero Pargo. Mack is expected to sign a non-guaranteed contract before the Wizards return to practice on Tuesday, according to sources with knowledge of the deal. The Wizards decided to keep newcomers Jannero Pargo and Earl Barron over Shelvin Mack and Brian Cook for their final two roster spots and Wittman explained how circumstances surrounding Wall and Nene contributed to those choices. “They earned the spots, for their play through the month,” Wittman said of Barron and Pargo. “It was tough, now. But this is the group that I believe in, and we’re moving forward with. It wasn’t easy. Obviously, injuries change a little bit, our thinking, as we moved forward. That’s the thing about this business. You never know. As I talked most of this preseason, guys had opportunities and took advantage of them. And they are here. “You never know what’s going to happen moving forward with both those guys – Cook and Shelvin – that were with me before, and it’s hard,” he continued. “No question, that was not a fun day.” Washington Post |

The Wizards had 19 players in camp and 13 players signed to guaranteed contracts, leaving two spots up for grabs for four players – Barron, Cook, Shelvin Mack and Jannero Pargo. Randolph and the seldom-used Steven Gray are probably out of the discussion, since they didn’t get much action in the last three games. When asked about his leanings, Wittman said, “I ain’t telling you.” Washington Post |

The Las Vegas summer league, which is less than two weeks away, is currently a high priority as the team looks to fill out its roster in time for mini-camp next week. The Wizards expect to have second-year players Jan Vesely, Chris Singleton and Shelvin Mack, and recent draft picks Beal and Satoransky. Satoransky is currently under contract in Spain and would need to receive clearance from FIBA to play for the Wizards. “We have already applied for” clearance, Grunfeld said. “Whether they grant it or not, remains to be seen. You just don’t know.” Washington Post |

Do you have a good idea of who will be on the summer league roster in vegas? You can probably assume that the rookies from last year - Jan Vesely, Shelvin Mack and Chris Singleton - will play. I heard Vesely is coming from the Czech Republic next month to get ready, so he's in. The three draft picks from this year will participate. Jordan Crawford has stated that he'd be willing to play, but I'm not so sure he will. Other than that, you might see Morris Almond or Cartier Martin give it go. I wouldn't count on John Wall, Trevor Booker or Kevin Seraphin, who will be getting ready for the Olympics. Washington Post |

Unlike most second-round picks, Mack doesn’t have to worry about making the team, since he was selected with the purpose of backing up Wall and arrives with an establish role. “I know what they expect of me,” Mack said. “It makes everything easier for me. I don’t have to wonder what I need to do to get on the court, just make sure I handle my business.” Washington Post |

Some players from the 2011 draft class are expected to attend. First-year pros scheduled to play include Grizzlies guard Josh Selby, Wizards guard Shelvin Mack, Clippers forward Al-Farouq Aminu, Blazers guard Armon Johnson and Celtics guard Avery Bradley, according to Abunassar. The Las Vegas league could be particularly valuable to rookies, who would miss crucial practice time if the labor strife affects training camps, set to open in early October. ESPN.com |

The Bucks have shown some interest in Butler point guard Shelvin Mack. But since the Bucks have a relatively-high pick - No. 10 overall - and Mack is projected to be a late first-round pick, Mack has declined an invitation to work out for the Bucks. Racine Journal-Times |
