The New Orleans Hornets have waived center Solomon Alabi and guard Chris Wright, General Manager Dell Demps announced today. Alabi (7’1”, 252) played in three of the Hornets eight preseason outings averaging 0.7 points and 1.7 rebound in six minutes per game. Wright (6’1”, 209) played in two preseason games with Hornets, averaging 1.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in six minutes per game. NBA.com

With NBA teams required to pare down their rosters to the league's minimum 15 by Monday, the New Orleans Hornets released guard Chris Wright and center Solomon Alabi on Saturday, according to league sources. The Toronto Raptors announced Wednesday they have assigned centre Solomon Alabi to the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League. Alabi will continue to be included on the Raptors’ roster and will be placed on the team’s inactive list. He appeared in 22 games during three stints with the NBA D-League’s Erie BayHawks last season, averaging 7.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 18.5 minutes. Alabi’s lone appearance with the Raptors this season came January 1 at Orlando. He played in 12 games with Toronto last season, totaling six points and 14 rebounds in 59 minutes. The club acquired the draft rights to Alabi from the Dallas Mavericks on June 24, 2010. He was the 50th overall selection in the 2010 NBA Draft. NBA.com

They already targeted their center... Solomon Alabi... he killed it in their min-camp in June and he really started to come around. I talked with some people at the Raptors camp, and they said hands down Solomon was the best player there. Dwyane Casey really likes him and he will get a real chance. Not saying they won't look to bring in bigs, but they think they have a possible starter in Solo and with Bargs and Ed Davis able to play the 5 spot, they may not have the gap you think they do. All in all, a trip to the basketball boonies was an entirely underwhelming experience for Solomon Alabi. The raw Raptors rookie returned to the big leagues Thursday after a three-week stint with the D League Erie Bayhawks and, like teammate Ed Davis, all he really learned is that he doesn’t want to go back. “I want to stay in the NBA,” Alabi said matter-of-factly. “The NBA’s better than the D League so I never want to go back to the D League.” Alabi’s trip almost lasted longer than it should have because, like all kids starting out in their professions, the 22-year-old was budget-conscious. “They tried to call my phone (to recall him) but I turned off my phone when I was there,” Alabi said. “I’ve got a Canadian phone so the roaming was killing me so they couldn’t get a hold of me. They called my agent, my agent called someone there and they told me I was coming back.” Toronto Star

Solomon Alabi and Ed Davis are with the team today but not for long, I’m told. I think you’ll see Alabi assigned to Erie of the D League the first of the week so he can go down there and get some practice and game work with the Bayhawks. And I’m told Davis may get some time down in the minors in the next little while (maybe a week or so away) to get some game work in as he comes back from knee surgery. I guess both moves make sense, although I do think each of the young bigs would benefit almost as much from practicing against NBA guys than playing in a guard-oriented minor league, but as long as they’re not gone long, there’s no big problem. Word has leaked that Solomon Alabi’s fall on draft night has been linked with a positive test for Hepatitis B. How that diagnosis affects Alabi’s pro career isn’t easily discernible, but the Raptors believe the kid will able to function, which might help explain why they forked over cash and a future second-round pick to Dallas to acquire the Nigerian-born big man’s rights with the 50th slot. Given the sensitive nature, the Raptors aren’t prepared to comment, but it’s widely known a red flag was attached to Alabi on draft night with talk of a medical condition hovering over the 7-foot-1 product of Florida State. According to one report, Alabi had a “rare medical condition,’’ which clearly discouraged teams from taking a prospect many had pegged as a first-rounder. Toronto Sun
