Novak occasionally makes the sign after hitting a three-pointer. He does it in honor of Aaron Rogers and his hometown Green Bay Packers. “It warms my heart, it really does,” Novak said of the former Knick. “The best part about doing the belt is hearing the stories of all the little kids around the world that hit a 3-pointer and do the belt. You know, one day when little Nathan grows up, I hope that his dreams come true and he can be just like me .” New York Daily News

White was approached by union officials last week about the dunk competition. The union has more influence in the Saturday night skill competitions in the new format in which the conferences compete against each other. A team captain will be chosen for the East and West and make the final call on participants. A league source said the Knicks’ Steve Novak is expected to compete in the 3-point competition. A smart NBA employee, according to New York Knicks forward Steve Novak, doesn’t buy a home in the city where he works; he rents. “Statistically, very few guys stay in one place, so I think the people you have around you, your agents and advisors, are people that tell you to rent, don’t buy,” Novak said. “You are probably not going to be there forever, and even if you feel like you are, you can’t guarantee it. The guys who find a home are lucky, but I think a lot guys do bounce around for their whole career.” Novak, of course, had always been one of those guys before finding a good landing spot in Manhattan. Drafted as a Houston Rocket, Novak has played for five different teams in only seven NBA seasons. However, after a career year with the Knicks in 2011-12, Novak was able to ink a four-year deal to stay in New York. HoopsWorld

Of course, that doesn’t mean he’s decided it’s time to buy. “I rent,” Novak said, “because a lot of times things are out of your control. Sometimes the team controls the situation when it comes down to it, so with injuries and contracts… it’s just smart to rent. That doesn’t mean I want to be somewhere else; obviously I want to be in New York for the rest of my career, but I will rent every day of it.” HoopsWorld

Felton, who shot 7 of 18, and Jason Kidd (five points) didn’t show up. They combined to shoot 1 of 9 from the 3-point stripe. Each committed three turnovers and didn’t play their normal hard-nosed defense. “We really didn’t guard anyone off the dribble,’’ said Steve Novak, who hugged his friend Lin after the final buzzer. “I know Jeremy wasn’t sure how it would go. He seemed very comfortable.’’ New York Post

Steve Novak did his hands-to-the-waist sign, mimicking putting on a championship boxing belt. Raymond Felton and Ronnie Brewer, the only other Knicks who made threes in a game when they shot too many, allowing Phoenix to pull within six points late, didn’t even bother doing anything. “It just means three," Novak said of Wallace’s sign. “ We just sit around and come up with these kinds of silly things." Novak, out of Brown Deer, Wis., and Marquette, could have wound up with his hometown Bucks. “I knew that, winning the case, I honestly think it was biggest for me of all the guys’ part of it,’’ said Novak. “It affected me the most.’’ The Bucks were in the mix. “We talked,’’ Novak said. “We talked several times when I’ve been a free agent. I never know for sure at what level. But no, I wanted to be back . If I could choose Milwaukee or New York, hands down, New York. It’s the truth.’’ New York Post

Not that he doesn’t wish it would have gone differently with Lin. They still speak, and did so as recently as Thursday. “I definitely was [shocked],’’ Novak said. “I called Jeremy when I was getting close to my deal. And I said, ‘We’re going to be teammates.’ I was sure he was coming back and he didn’t. “As a friend in anything, if you think you’re going to be back on the team with a friend, it’s exciting. And then he was gone. That to me was a bummer.’’ New York Post

Knicks sharpshooter Steve Novak told ESPNNewYork.com on Wednesday that he and most of the team have organized a "pre-training camp" starting Monday. The camp will take place at the Knicks' training facility in Greenburgh, N.Y., and will continue all the way through Oct. 1, when the Knicks must report for media day. Novak said the activities will include alternating days of basketball and conditioning skills work. "We just want to make sure we hit the ground running," Novak said. ESPN.com

Steve Novak hoped Linsanity would return to New York, but he agrees that Houston’s back-loaded, poison pill contract offer was “ridiculous.” “It can be looked at as a ridiculous contract in the sense that it’s a $5 [million], a $5 [million] and a $15 [million over the first three years],” Novak told SNY.tv Wednesday at the Steve Novak Basketball Camp at Sleepy Hollow High School. “It is kind of ridiculous in terms of the structure. I don’t think in terms of Jeremy’s value that it’s ridiculous. I think everybody knows that. He’s very valuable….I wasn’t there when Carmelo said it but ‘ridiculous contract,’ I think probably means more the fact that there’s a max offer being offered in the third year when the first two was a five.” The Knicks Blog

Now that Lin is gone to Houston, Novak said he’s “shocked.” “I think more than anything, most people are shocked,” he said. “I don’t think anybody saw the possibility of Jeremy being anywhere else.” The Knicks Blog

Steve Novak: “@AdamZagoria: Novak Agrees Houston Contract Offer to Lin Was ‘Ridiculous’ http://www.theknicksblog.com/2012/0… (Very misleading headline, read what I said) Twitter

"In free agency, you have to do what you feel is best for your family and I believe being here was," Novak said. "I definitely anticipated Jeremy being back, but it wasn't the only reason I came back." ESPN.com
