HoopsHype Thaddeus Young + Trade rumors

August 22, 2014 Updates

The Minnesota Timberwolves expect to land Philadelphia's Thaddeus Young in addition to No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins when they complete their long-anticipated trade that sends Kevin Love to the Cavaliers this weekend, NBA front-office sources said. ESPN.com

Although nothing can be finalized before Saturday, sources said Thursday that the Wolves are poised to surrender a future first-round pick along with the expiring contracts of Luc Richard Mbah A Moute and Alexey Shved to the Sixers for Young, who has two seasons left on his deal valued at $19.4 million. The Wolves, sources said, already have verbally agreed to acquire Wiggins, 2013's No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett and a future first-round pick from the Cavs for Love. Minnesota would then have the option of flipping that first-rounder to Philadelphia, along with Mbah A Moute and Shved, for Young. ESPN.com

The Cavaliers will get Love to team with superstar LeBron James and guard Kyrie Irving. Philadelphia will receive Miami’s 2015 first-round pick that the Cavaliers own as well as the expiring contracts of Wolves players Luc Mbah a Moute and Alexey Shved. Like 76ers lottery pick Joel Embiid, Mbah a Moute is from Cameroon and has mentored the gifted but injured center chosen third in the June draft. The Sixers expect Mbah a Moute’s presence to ease Embiid’s NBA transition. Minneapolis Star-Tribune

The long-awaited Kevin Love trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Cleveland Cavaliers will finally be formalized soon, but there was an unexpected twist near the end: Anthony Bennett won't go to the Philadelphia 76ers as part of the three-team deal after all. According to a person with knowledge of the deal that will be finalized on Saturday, the Cavaliers forward and 2013 No. 1 pick who was rumored to be headed for the 76ers will be retained by the Timberwolves. He'll join 2014 No. 1 pick and fellow Cavaliers youngster Andrew Wiggins in Minnesota, where the Timberwolves will also receive 76ers forward Thaddeus Young and a trade exception (which allows teams to acquire players via trade without taking players back in return) worth more than $5 million. Thaddeus Young has heard the rumors about being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, but Friday morning, Young could not say whether or not the reports were true. "I know nothing as of right now," Young said at his annual basketball camp in King of Prussia. "I have seen stories, but as of right now I haven't heard anything. My focus is not on that. It is here at this camp with my son and the rest of the kids at the camp." CSNPhilly.com

Young was asked to reflect on his seven years playing for the team that selected him 12th overall in the 2007 draft. "I still don't know if I am leaving Philadelphia," Young said. "This city has helped me grow and become the basketball player I am today. They let me know when I am doing bad, and they let me know when I am doing well. This city has made me stronger as a basketball player." CSNPhilly.com

The Warriors haven't spoken with Minnesota for weeks about Love trade scenarios, another league source said. That's due in part to their long-held reluctance to include Thompson in the discussions, but also due to the fact that the Cavs and Wolves settled on these basic deal points weeks ago -- before Love pulled out of his Team USA obligation, one of the league sources said. One rival GM told CBSSports.com that Minnesota has been exploring a separate trade with Philadelphia for Thaddeus Young, who would replace Love in the Wolves' starting lineup. CBSSports.com

Brian Windhorst: "Oh, it's got traction, it's got traction. The deal is done but not done. The teams have agreed but they can't say they've agreed and they can't agree because we're in this weird moratorium period. Because you can't trade Andrew Wiggins until the 23rd of this month. So, between now and then which is what, 19 days? Could something happen? Could a team come in with a trade that maybe Minnesota see? Yes, it could happen, so therefore it is not done. ESPN.com
