Tony Allen took to Twitter on Monday to give fans a video peek at how hard he’s working to return from a left hamstring strain. However, the Grizzlies’ veteran swingman will sit out at least another week with the injury and his return to action before the playoffs begin seems questionable. “I’m trying to do all I can do to get healthy,” Allen said Monday after missing the past four games. “If I was 100 percent I’d be playing. I feel bad that I can’t go out there. I feel like I’m energy. I’m a spark plug. My enthusiasm plays a role into us being successful. It hurts my heart not to be out there. I’m frustrated because the injury comes at a bad time because I felt like I was in a good rhythm. It’s a minor setback for major comeback.” Memphis Commercial Appeal

Allen was hampered by injuries during his six years with the Celtics. He played more than 54 games just twice and also dealt with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Allen feels the added downtime early on can result in a longer career. “I feel like I’ve got a good five more [years] in me,” he said. “I feel like I missed a lot of time when I was younger and I still feel great.” Boston Globe

Gasol was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. Allen, a three-time All-Defensive Team selection, would not entertain the thought of seeing Gasol in another uniform – especially that of the Knicks, who desperately need a star alongside Carmelo Anthony – because he views his teammate as more than a Grizzly. He sees Gasol as the Grizzly. “He looks good in a Memphis Grizzlies uniform,” Tony Allen told SheridanHoops. “The colors just fit him perfectly. He’s not a bright orange kind of guy. He fits the blue. The blue bear. He is the Grizzly.” SheridanHoops

“I really don’t understand analytic type stuff,” he says. “I know it’s got me in the Defensive Player of the Year discussion so I’ll take it.” Allen has been awarded All-Defensive team honors in three of the last four seasons—first team twice. Last year he was left out. “They robbed me last year,” he says. “The only reason they didn’t put me in there is because I missed a lot of games, but this year I’m for sure first team.” complex.com

Despite playing off the bench, Allen remained as engaged as ever. This weekend, he was reinserted into the starting lineup for a Mavericks/Blazers back-to-back that the Grizzlies swept. “He goes a little extra sometimes but that’s him,” says Gasol. “I remember the first time I saw Tony in the Finals, when Boston was playing L.A., and I thought, 'Who the hell is that guy with the towel and 42 on the back, just screaming and yelling and moving? Just tell him to sit down.' But you see him doing the same things here, so it’s his nature. We not gonna change him. We gotta embrace Tony, because he gives you so much things that are so special that are hard to find. He has a special talent he really does and he works. You gotta love him for that.” complex.com

Grizzlies emotional swingman Tony Allen made no apologies for causing havoc Wednesday night in a win over the Houston Rockets. Allen, however, expressed regret about his behavior that led to him serving a one-game suspension for violating team policy on Tuesday. A physical altercation with reserve guard Nick Calathes during a drill led to Allen lashing out at coaches and refusing to continue practice. Memphis Commercial Appeal

Marc Stein: ESPN sources say practice confrontation between Grizz teammates Tony Allen and Nick Calathes, while heated, did not rise to "physical" level. Sources say Tony Allen's one-game ban largely stemmed from fact he waved off coaches' attempts to calm him down after tangle with Calathes Twitter @ESPNSteinLine

Allen was suspended for the game because of violating a team policy. After more digging into the issue, Allen’s physical confrontation was apparently with Calathes during practice. Frustration clearly is building with the team playing poorly and the starting unit lacking consistent and forceful play. Memphis Commercial Appeal
