Allen once told reporters that he'd like to retire in Memphis. But that decision is out of his hands given he'll become an unrestricted free agent next summer. The Griz cannot extend Allen's contract this season. Players must be signed to at least a four-year deal to be eligible for a contract extension, per the NBA's collective bargaining agreement. "I can't think about that. I have to let that play out," Allen said. "When I came here, I did everything they asked me to do. I'll keep it simple and let the organization make that decision. I don't want to go anywhere." Memphis Commercial Appeal

However, the best news regarding Allen these days is that he's back on the basketball court while recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery. The Grizzlies' stalwart on defense underwent a minor procedure during the offseason to repair cartilage in his left knee. Allen has been in town working out in FedExForum and declared that he'll be ready when training camp opens Oct. 2. "I'm definitely getting myself back to being that thirsty dog," Allen said. "I don't want to rush it. But I'll be back for the first game, Oct. 31, against the (Los Angeles) Clippers. I guarantee that." Memphis Commercial Appeal

Two summers ago when Wallace, as the Grizzlies' general manager, was trying to lure then-free agent Allen from the Celtics, he called Cyprien, who happened to be on Josh Pastner's University of Memphis staff. "Glynn Cyprien is the guy who got Tony to sign with us," said Wallace, whose signing of Allen in July 2010 to a three-year, $9.7 million contract cemented the gritty style of play that has gotten the Grizzlies to the playoffs two consecutive seasons. So who are the league leaders in play-hard per game? "I think the leader right now is Tony Allen (of the Grizzlies)," Karl said. "The guy who's been incredibly good over the years has been (Boston's) Kevin Garnett, from a superstar standpoint. He was a leader of the play-hard game. I think the Derrick Rose kid plays awful hard — also Joakim Noah. I think Chicago wins because of that. And same in Memphis because of Tony Allen. From a veteran point guard situation, (Dallas') Jason Kidd — he doesn't have that energy hustle game, but the combination of his brain and his play-hard mentality is pretty (darn) good. (The Spurs') Manu Ginobili would be on that list. Denver Post
