The Wizards fully expected that Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza would be under contract through the 2013-14 season when they acquired them last June from the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for Rashard Lewis’s expiring contract. Okafor and Ariza have early-termination options in their contracts for next season, but both confirmed this week their intentions to finish out their respective deals. “I don’t know many people who are going to leave money on the table and I’m not one of the people to do that, so most likely,” said Ariza, who is slated to earn $7.7 million next season. Let's set the scene for you: The Wizards trail by one point with 12 seconds left. After working the ball around, Trevor Ariza gets a good look at a shot from the corner. He lets it fly at the buzzer ... and ... it ... goes in! Just kidding. No it didn't. It was an airball. But Buckhantz, who later blamed a poor angle on the play, thought it was a perfect swish and yelled "daaaaaaaaagggggggggggerrrrrr!" thinking the Wizards had just pulled off a stunning win with a clutch shot. Nevermind that Ariza didn't pump his first or get swarmed by teammates. Instead he walked sadly off the court with the swagger of a 9-year-old who had just been told bad news about the family pet. The Clips stood pat, but not by their basketball people's choice. L.A. and Washington had a done deal Wednesday night that would have sent forward Trevor Ariza to the Clippers in exchange for Caron Butler, giving L.A. a long, defensive-oriented body to throw at the likes of Kevin Durant in the playoffs. (Butler, who still has an offseason home in the D.C. area, and who was loved by the locals, didn't have a problem returning to a non-Arenas Wizards locker room. He'd have been welcomed back as a much-needed offensive option, according to sources.) NBA.com

But sources indicated that Clippers owner Donald Sterling nixed the deal Thursday morning, not wanting to gamble on the team's chemistry being affected in any way down the stretch. My interpretation: we don't want to do anything that could, in any way, be held against us by assistant general manager Chris Paul this summer if we don't get far in the postseason. NBA.com

Wizards forward Trevor Ariza helped deliver one of the those titles for Buss during 1½ seasons with his hometown Lakers in 2009 and was understandably touched to hear about his passing. “That’s tough man, that’s tough for the Lakers organization, the Buss family and city of L.A.,” said Ariza. “It hurts. It hurts bad that a legend like that is gone. I knew him pretty well. He came down to a lot of the practices, always at the games. Matter of fact, he lived down the street from me so I saw him quite frequently.” Washington Post

Trevor Ariza will not be back in uniform when the Wizards host the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday at Verizon Center, but he would like for his status to change by the end of the week. “I hope so, man,” Ariza said. “Just have to keep progressing, keep getting better.” Washington Post

Trevor Ariza, Trevor Booker, A.J. Price and John Wall all made the short trip to Chicago, where the Wizards lost, 87-77, to the Bulls at United Center. And, while all four are making progress with their respective injuries, Coach Randy Wittman said Ariza is probably closest to returning to full- contact practice, possibly by Monday. “He’s coming along good,” Wittman said of Ariza, who strained his left calf in the third quarter of the Wizards’ stunning 105-101 victory over the Miami Heat on Dec. 4. “We’ll see how the next couple of games, go. He’s still got a little tightness in there.” Washington Post

Washington has been decimated by injuries, with John Wall, Trevor Ariza, Beal and Nene among the unavailable players, and lost their sixth straight. ''That was an embarrassment, and I apologize to our ownership and to our fans,'' Washington coach Randy Wittman said. ''I especially apologize to anyone who watched that entire game. I would have turned it off after the first five minutes.'' Jordan Crawford led Washington with 20 points, but no one else scored more than 10 points. ''This was a situation where we had some key guys out, which meant our other guys had a chance to step up and prove that they belong in the NBA,'' Wittman said in a postgame news conference that only lasted one question. ''That didn't happen. We may only have nine guys, but I need to find five of them who are willing to show me that they deserve to be here.'' Yahoo! Sports

The shiner under his left eye will heal soon enough, but Ariza can’t say for sure when he expects to feel relaxed with his new team. Ariza, a 6-foot-8 small forward, is playing with his sixth team in eight seasons, but he admitted that settling in with the Wizards and understanding the nuances of the offense have taken more time than usual. “It’s never been this long to adjust to something for myself, so of course it’s frustrating,” said Ariza, who is averaging 4.5 points and shooting just 25 percent (3 of 12) in two starts. SLAM: What’s good with that NBA album, that collaborative joint? Stephen Jackson: Yeah. A guy who used to work for Bad Boy with Puff Daddy, he had to do with a lot of those records they were doing in the Biggie days, he came up with the idea of doing an album called Full Court Press, where it’s athletes and entertainers doing songs together. It was a great idea. When I went I was excited about it. I didn’t know who I was gonna be with, but it’s only right me and Bun [B] did a song. I went in there and I went so hard on the song with Bun that they asked me to do the intro with Yelawolf. It’s going to be crazy, man. I think LeBron’s on it, Rick Ross, Kevin Durant, Trevor Ariza, Shawn Marion, Josh Smith, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube—it’s supposed to be pretty hot. SLAM
