Duke freshman Tyus Jones will enter the 2015 NBA Draft, head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Wednesday. “Tyus could not have done a better job for us this past year,” said Krzyzewski. “We’re so very happy for him and his family to have the opportunity to declare for the draft. He is projected to be a first-round pick. He’s going to get a lot better, but people have already seen him and know how he handles himself, especially in pressure situations and in the biggest games. He comes through like a champion! I loved coaching him, and I believe he’ll be an outstanding professional. At this time, I think is so appropriate for him to take advantage of this opportunity.” Duke University Blue Devils Official Athletics Site

“Coming to Duke was a dream of mine and being a part of such a special team was amazing,” said Jones. “I knew coming in I would be a part of a great team, but I never envisioned I would be a part of such an incredible family. That is what has made winning a national championship such an amazing experience. I am faced with the tough decision of returning to a place I love or pursuing my next dream. With the support and guidance of my family, my coaches, my teammates, and Duke University, I have decided to start my professional career. Even though I am entering the NBA Draft, I will forever be a Duke Blue Devil.” Duke University Blue Devils Official Athletics Site

In the wake of the title, Jahlil Okafor, Justise Winslow and Tyus Jones have decisions to make on their futures. Okafor is a projected top-2 pick in June’s NBA Draft and when the topic comes up, yes, Brand is a bit of a homer there, too. “He’s definitely gonna be one of those top three picks for sure,” Brand told SNY.tv Wednesday evening after his Atlanta Hawks defeated the Nets, 114-111 at Barclays Center. “I follow it, I watch the other guys and I don’t want to go full nepotism, but I would take him No. 1.” ZagsBlog.com

Duke point guard Tyus Jones said Wednesday that he hasn’t decided whether he will return to school or enter the NBA draft. Jones, a freshman, said he will consult with his family and coaches before making his announcement. The Apple Valley product was the star of the Blue Devil’s national championship game victory Monday night over Wisconsin. “I don’t have a timeline,” Jones told the Star Tribune Wednesday afternoon. “I’m just going to take it slowly and weigh both options. Ultimately just make the right and smart decision.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Tyus needs to take his game to the next level. Now. "He needs to enjoy the moment," his father, Robert, told me as his son was preparing to cut down the nets at Lucas Oil Stadium. "Be grateful. Be humble." That's all good. Then, he needs to get paid. Let's face it: His stock will never be higher than it is right now. "That’s true," his father admitted. ESPN.com

Almost every NBA figure I reached Monday agreed that Jones will be drafted somewhere in the 20-30 range. Those I asked also conceded it would be difficult to envision his stock soaring much higher. "It's hard to see his star being higher," one high-level NBA executive told me after the game. "He still can't guard and is a below-average athlete, but he has [guts], is smart, poised, is a solid shooter and can play pick-and-roll. He should probably leave." ESPN.com

While Duke freshmen Jahlil Okafor and Justise Winslow are projected as top-5 picks in the NBA Draft, their fellow freshman Tyus Jones is widely considered a late-first-round pick. DraftExpress.com projects Okafor at No. 2, Winslow at No. 5 and Jones at No. 26. “[With] Tyus Jones, the further Duke goes I assume it solidifies him as somebody they may take at the back end of the first round,” one veteran NBA scout told SNY.tv. “I think he’s a second-round pick but somebody may take him at the back end of the first round.” ZagsBlog.com
