The Los Angeles Lakers have signed guard Vander Blue for the remainder of the season, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released. Blue joins the Lakers from the team’s NBA Development League affiliate, the Los Angeles D-Fenders, where he finished second in the NBADL in scoring at 23.3 points per game on 47.3% shooting (41.6% from beyond-the-arc), in addition to 5.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game in 49 appearances (47 starts). The 22-year-old was selected as an NBADL All-Star this season, and held the distinction of being the only player to average at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists in 2014-15. Blue becomes the third D-Fender to receive a GATORADE Call-Up this season, joining Jabari Brown (Lakers) and Jamaal Franklin (Nuggets). NBA.com

The Lakers could look to their own NBA Development League affiliate for talent, or to the general free-agent pool, perhaps with a 10-day contract to offer. The Lakers can also look at other D-League players who aren't on their specific minor-league squad. Presuming the team might look to add a guard, Jabari Brown, who went through training camp with the Lakers, is averaging 24.3 points a game with the D-Fenders. Vander Blue (21.3 a night) and Jamaal Franklin (20.4) have also been consistent scorers with the Lakers' affiliate. Los Angeles Times

Said Stevens of throwing Blue into the fire in Washington after the team initially signed him last month: "It’s not really fair to somebody to call them up and have them drive 2 ½ hours day of game and play in an NBA game. That’s just not really fair to a young guy, to put him in the spot like that. But he did a pretty good job. He just got better as his 10 days went on." Later Stevens added: "I think he’s got a good future and a potential future in the league. I hope that everything works out well for him." ESPN.com

The team was still deciding whether to sign Vander Blue to a second 10-day contract, but sent him and Vitor Faverani to Portland to join the Maine Red Claws for their game last night. Boston Herald
