Happy Walters Rumors

On Nov. 4, ASM Sports and Miller filed a notice to appeal. But it is clear Fegan and Relativity Sports are pleased with the judge’s decision, which was rendered without the means for Miller and ASM Sports to amend the complaint. “We were able to show the judge through briefings and a hearing that they failed to state a claim,” Relativity Sports lawyer Heather Karatz said. “Even assuming these baseless allegations are true, there’s still no claim here. It became evident to the judge that this is the nature of the basketball player representation and business. Players change agents during their career when they want new representation. In Larry’s case, Larry and Happy had a history.”

Not often does one player leaving one agency for another result in a lawsuit but that’s what happened after Milwaukee Bucks center Larry Sanders left agent Andy Miller and ASM Sports for agent Dan Fegan and Relativity Sports in the summer of 2013 during the height of free agency. Last month, a New York judge dismissed that lawsuit, which accused Relativity of client stealing and sought financial compensation, and ruled the “Defendants’ motion to dismiss Plaintiff’s complaint is granted for failure to state a cause of action.” The ruling is vindication for Fegan, president of Relativity Sports’ basketball division, and Happy Walters, the CEO of Relativity Sports, who was also a defendant in the complaint filed nearly a year ago.

A sports agency is accusing Mariano Rivera’s agents of playing dirty pool to steal away one of its clients. Andy Miller and ASM Sports accuse Happy Walters and Relativity Sports of stealing Milwaukee Bucks shooting guard Larry Sanders away from them with “flights on private planes, expensive dinners, invites to pre-ESPY awards parties, acting classes and trips to Disneyland for his family,” according to papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court.

Stoudemire was even invited to play for the Israeli national team by President Shimon Peres. It’s something Stoudemire’s agent, Happy Walters, sees as a real possibility. In fact, Walters says that Stoudemire is in the process of becoming an official Israeli. “He’s getting citizenship,” the agent told Daily Intelligencer at the premiere of We’re the Millers last night. “He applied, and he’s there now.”

Howard was flanked with his agent, Dan Fegan, and Happy Walters, the CEO of Relativity Media and an agent in the company. What those close to Howard had been saying privately for months was clearly apparent through the probing that Howard did himself with Rockets officials: Winning was his most important priority in the process, and most of the evening was spent discussing how the Rockets had a history of constructing themselves around iconic centers in pursuit of championships.

Walters said adding Fegan was a key move, not just because of his client list, but because of additional areas where he can add value to the group. “Dan has had No. 1 draft picks; he’s done all the negotiating you can do, but Dan is ready to help build a business and that is what we are excited about,” Walters said. “That is what we want to put together here. A lot of smart guys who have a lot of experience looking at how we want to grow sports in the future. What intangibles are we going to be able to identify and monetize and grow businesses around in the future?”

Earlier this month, Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson terminated his relationship with his agent Leon Rose at Creative Artists Agency (CAA), and many speculated that Lawson would end up signing with basketball agent Happy Walters. Sports Agent Blog has received confirmation from Walters that Lawson is now his client. Lawson was drafted by Minnesota #18 overall in the 2009 NBA Draft, but the right to that pick was traded to the Denver Nuggets. Lawson has played with the Nuggets ever since (the Nuggets exercised its third and fourth year options on Lawson’s rookie contract).

Fegan represents Dwight Howard, John Wall, Ricky Rubio, Stephen Jackson, Shawn Marion, Nene, Kevin Martin, and many other high-end NBA players. Walters’ biggest client is Amare Stoudemire, but he also represents guys like Iman Shumpert and Moe Harkless. According to HoopsHype.com, combining Fegan’s clients’ salaries with Walters’ clients’ salaries would result in a total of $179,455,308 under representation, putting the combo in the #4 overall spot just behind Creative Artists Agency (which may see its position change based on the recent NBPA certification of Rich Paul).

Orlando Magic forward Earl Clark is “leaning” toward declining the player option on his contract in order to become an unrestricted free agent, Clark’s agent, Happy Walters, told Orlando Pinstriped Post on Friday. Clark has until June 29th to notify the Magic of his decision. Walters said the team’s lack of a head coach after dismissing Stan Van Gundy on May 21st may play a role in Clark’s decision.
