JOHN SALLEY IN THE HOUSE, DAWG
If you're having trouble connecting, refresh a couple times and eventually it works. Again, sorry for the inconvenience, folks. DB
Which is shocking, because Grizzlies don't often give them up.
The Spurs' 14 made 3-pointers was a stunning number. So was the 29 attempts. Not many were contested. They manufactured TONS of open looks.
The Punt kick!
I just fell asleep and woke up to Kruk talking about Dwight Howard...is everything OK? Everybody cool? What's happening right now?
Looks like Dwight watch has begun. Reports he's interested in Houston, but I wouldn't read much into any rumors... Gut says he stays in LA.
I still say Gentry HAS to make that catch
If you get a Database Error just refresh a couple times. Been having some server issues today. Sorry for the inconvenience. DB
Pretty sure I hear @philmcguire33 leading the "Randy! Randy!" Cheers.
The Pacers were off today, so that means there will be lots of questions at practice tomorrow over this Vogel and LeBron non-story.
Every ball hit out to right makes me vomit
Do not fall for fake reporter accounts.
Just learned an interesting little factoid: The little kid Elvis impersonator in "Honeymoon in Vegas" is Bruno Mars. AK
Movie night continues. Just finished Silver Linings Playbook, Django is up next. Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday.
Then watch him re-sign with the Lakers once all is said and done.
Dwight Howard took a lot of hits to get to this point where he is a free agent. He is going to savor it. Even if it means more PR hits.
At the draft combine, a lot of NBA teams will ask a player to guess how many basketballs would fit in the room where the interview is held.
My all-time favorite question that a team asked players at the NBA draft combine: "What kind of weed do you smoke?" Most players cracked up.
Houston? Really Dwight? Even Shaq doesn't like the idea.
Postgame libation on the Riverwalk with BK. http://t.co/7iDIHvJBq5
Every year at the draft combine, at least one NBA team always asks: "Would you rather start on a losing team or sit on a winning team?"
The answer that the NBA team wanted to hear from players was that they would tip the blender over and crawl out.
That was an uh-oh
Was hoping Zeb would cut a political promo on the AP phone records.
Weirdest question a team asked at the NBA combine: "If you were the size of a pen and you were trapped in a blender, how would you get out?"
If Kane not coming to Memphis, I'm sure it will be shot down soon, but was told of possibility by "those in the know" this weekend
Spurs played fantastic individual and team defense on Z-Bo. Well-timed fronts, mucking up entry passing lanes, swarmed him when he got ball.
Meanwhile, Tim Duncan scored six points. It's the third-lowest point total in a playoff win of his career.
Duncan on Z-Bo: "We knew coming in what he wanted to do. So far, what we game-planned worked pretty well.".
That Elvis play, however, was an alley-oop to Dominique circa 87
Just tried Two Bros BBQ w/ @jalenrose - off the charts tremendous. SA BBQ jumps to an early lead over Mem BBQ. Mem calls timeout to regroup.
Duncan indicated defensive game-plan on Randolph was two years in the making, dating to 2011 playoff series.
Damn Rangers, that was ugly. Resembled an alley-oop to Kendrick Perkins
Tim Duncan, on Spurs' Game 1 rout: "That's about as good as it could go." Yep.
Word on the street is the Memphis Tigers might be adding Marshall transfer DeAndre Kane.
That's all I'm going to tweet for now. Back to focusing on the playoffs and draft. We'll get into free agency rumors once July gets closer.
The media circus that surrounded the "Dwightmare" was absurd. And he's mentioned numerous times he wants to avoid that this time around. DB
I do believe Dwight doesn't want a repeat of last summer, which is one of the reasons he's intent on keeping quiet this time around. DB
The bottom line is that Howard will take his time, there will be countless rumors, and then he'll make his decision. That's how it goes. DB
Saying this means he isn't loyal or any of that nonsense is a waste of time. Even Kobe threatened to leave via free agency at one point. DB
Being mad at Howard for testing free agency isn't fair. It's his right to do it, and nearly every player before him has done it too. DB
Also, Dwight Howard is going to take his time and meet with a lot of teams. Mitch Kupchak wanted him to make decision quickly, but he won't.
Lakers front office has said they want to know what Dwight's going to do, but he's shown no indication of speeding up his process. DB
For those of you asking about the Cavaliers, Blazers, etc. in regards to Dwight Howard's free agency, they haven't even been considered.
Biggest difference in Spurs 2011 vs. 2013? I'd argue Kawai Leonard. He was awesome today. Takes a lot of pressure off Ginobili.
If I had to guess, I think Dwight Howard's free agency comes down to the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers.
Nets are admittedly a long shot. All I'm saying is that they'll pursue Dwight Howard this summer. They've shown interest very recently.
For those saying the Nets can't do a sign-and-trade for Howard, they can as long as they're under apron amount after transaction's complete.
Spurs defense usually predicated about "take star X out of the game and let someone else beat us." They sold out defensively on Z-Bo.
Grizz have been resilient all year long and have battled back. No reason to think this will change. Major credit to Spurs who looked great.
The Atlanta Hawks will also pursue Dwight Howard. Their dream scenario is to sign Howard and Chris Paul. They can offer two max contracts.
Grizzlies could use a mulligan on Game 1. Seemed a bit overtaken by the gravity of the moment. Spurs in conference finals regularly.
Nets can sign-and-trade for Howard if their under the apron amount after transaction is complete. That means they must dump salary in deal.
The Nets will likely pursue Dwight Howard this summer. There's still mutual interest. But will the Lakers be open to a sign-and-trade?
Everybody knows only suckas win Game 1's
Dwight Howard will be weighing all of his options this summer. He's going shopping and considering all teams. Lakers will have competition.
As I wrote last week, Dwight Howard's interest in the Houston Rockets is real. He'll definitely consider them and speak with James Harden.
But essentially Dwight would have to agree to another tough year in L.A. before there's enough cleared cap space to make a splash. DB
In terms of money, the amount Howard would save in TX because of lack of income tax could compensate losing Bird Rights. DB
Now, does that mean Howard wants to leave and avoid the pressure of market like Los Angeles even w/ its benefits? I'm not so sure. DB
For the most part, for some reason Dwight hasn't been widely accepted in Los Angeles or by Laker fans. DB
Nobody would score at the rim ever against Dwight/Asik, but offensively it would be a trainwreck.
In terms of Dwight, it sounds like LAL still has the most off-court opportunities for him. But is that enough to entire him to return? DB
(I love Asik)
They would NOT work together at all.
Dwight wanting to play in a frontcourt with Asik doesn't speak well to his evaluation of talent and fit.
Should be category in Indy-Heat series matchups for Officiating. Give edge to Miami. Refs don't call fouls on LeBron. Just Tyson-Melo-Stoud.
Could Sterling have been in San Antonio on other business, on a Sunday, two rounds after Clips eliminated? If so, that's a first for him
Clips, I'm told, have NOT asked to interview Spurs' in-demand Mike Budenholzer. Suggests Sterling was thus scouting free agent-to-be Hollins
Hottest theory circulating here in San Antonio is that Donald Sterling was at Game 1 sitting across from Grizz bench to scout Lionel Hollins
If there's one thing we've learned about Dwight, it's that there will be dozens more of these stories before we have a resolution. DB
Rain has stopped. Two and half hour rain delay could be ending soon. Lundqvist could have used one of those today. http://t.co/JCwO3RDBes
We've got our first Dwight Howard update of the summer. Stay tuned. DB
Would love to be fly on wall for exit interviews for J.R. and Amar'e tomorrow. Don't think Woody and Amar'e talk much.
The late 90's were all about the Minneapolis alt-rock scene. Marcy Playground and Semisonic? Watch out Seattle!
Here's hoping the waring factions in Game of Thrones is more competitive in tonight's 8th episode than Game 1 between the Spurs & Grizzlies
They had Lakers themed Gatorade at the gas station I just stopped at http://t.co/U2Sq0DcTlO
Some thought "confirmed" meant as an owner by the NBA BOG. That will happen later this week.
I will always watch the 100 best songs of the 90's countdown on VH1.
Point of Clarification on Mayor's tweet that Vivek is "confirmed". He's confirmed to appear in person @ the Kings rally on Thursday.
Ah, yes. J.R. Smith remains the undisputed Twitter king. Baggy day tomorrow in Greemburgh oughta be a doozy
So am I reading this correctly? LeBron is even flopping on innocuous comments from Frank Vogel.
Between guessing wrong on the MVP voter and misinterpreting Vogel, LeBron's been wrong more than Heat have lost in the playoffs.
Free celebration idea: Three-periscope.
ESPNSIG: cada uno de los 14 triples encestados por @Spurs fueron habilitados por una asistencia.
Praying for friends and loved ones back in Norman. Find a shelter, stay safe, hold on tight.
Just saw powerball winning numbers and thought Bradley-flash-knuble-green
Tony Parker just called Memphis the best defense in the NBA. Hey, everyone in Indiana: You were right about that "no respect" thing.
Thanks to everyone that came to watch party and packed the place. I promise that was last one I'm doin. Homebound from here on out.
NBA: 14 three-pointers scored by the @Spurs today is a franchise record in the playoffs.
NBA: 14 triples encestados hoy por @Spurs en un partido de playoff es una nueva marca de franquicia.
Re-watching some of these Bonner 3s: MEM may have to start switching any Bonner action when Z-Bo is not in the game.
G1 great example how versatile Spurs are. Can kill you in so many ways. Memphis D gonna have to figure out how to close out the 3s.
Early flights from the West Coast, good cause u get home for the day which u can then waste taking a nap to catch up from the lost sleep
Western Conference Final, Game 1: Spurs beat Grizzlies 105-83. SA: Parker 20+9ass MEM: Marc Gasol 15+7, Conley 14+8ass
Pop in playoff presser mode: “Am I supposed to agree or disagree, or was there a question there?”
Well, that sucked
*sees Zach Randolph finished with only two points; doesn't bother trying to find out score, bc that says more than enough*
Spurs just performed open-heart surgery without the use of anesthesia.
Game 1 in the books. Spurs 105, Memphis 83. Spurs take 1-0 lead. Pop is going to be insufferable for the next two days.
*finishes story; turns on TV to see if San Antonio/Memphis is still a game*
That's the game, 105-83, Griz have 'em just where they want 'em.
Grizzlies beat two teams that mostly play offense on one side of the floor. Spurs are the antithesis of that. Major adjustment.
It's one game. No question. But you knew Clips wouldn't keep outrebounding Griz, like they did in Game 1. Not their game. This IS Spurs game
Jon Leuer with as many points as Zach Randolph.
Playoff blowouts happen. They rarely carry over.
Tim Duncan and Zach Randolph have combined for 8 points. Spurs didn't need a big game from Duncan
Spurs wore big boy pants. Griz wet theirs... plain and simple
Spurs throw a perfect game, Z-Bo with the golden sombrero.
what they ought to do is get MRI machines on the team plane
The Phillies say Ryan Howard is not traveling with the team. He will have an MRI in Philadelphia & will join the team later in the afternoon
The length of Green and Leonard was a huge key today. They have the skills Pop's offense needs without being undersized. Huge.
DeJuan Blair laughing as he ran down court, after tipping in a missed 3.
This is getting silly now
The Spurs have so many random dudes at the end of their bench.
That's the most 3s Memphis has given up in a game this season. Fourteen.
Just chalk this one up in the grizzaster column and get ready for game 2
Totally classless of Pop to run up the score by leaving Matt Bonner in.
Hollins waves white flag, empties bench and takes a seat
Well Grizzlies fans, just remember they lost game 1 of the other 2 series. Just one game, must adjust though. Way too many open threes
Z-bo takes a seat with 5:14 left; he's 1-8 FG, 2 pts., y7 RB
Sure enough! Jon Leuer!
Kevin Garnett is 37 years old today.
Spurs 4th in the league in three-point shooting percentage in the regular season, tied with the Knicks. Not a random occurrence.
Tracy McGrady and Tim Duncan are the dream team of mop-up guys.
Two Grizz adjustments: switch the wing rotation, improve positioning to take away initial pass when they trap the p&r.
Just let TMac have one highlight dunk.
Putting in T-Mac this early should elicit a technical for taunting.
Place just went bonkers for Tracy McGrady
T-Mac. Former NBA scoring champion. Playoff victory cigar.
Spurs have that "thank goodness we don't have to chase Curry and Thompson around anymore" vibe to their game today.
TMac in 6:45 left
Question I'm wondering: How well would athletic Heat defense deal with Spurs system/ball movement?
What time does the Grizz game start?
I continue to see no good reason for this Grizzlies lineup, on either side of the ball.
... Note to Grizzlies: The whole, "flop in Game 1, then recover to win series" thing is a less viable option as the rounds move along.
Problem for Grizzlies is neither Clippers or OKC did good job of sticking with system after first option failed. They will adjust.
That was a crafty little move by Conley to create that contact
I really didn't think the Grizz could score enough points to beat San Antonio. So far, that's the problem for Memphis.
I expect the rest of the series to be a possession-by-possession bloodfest, but ...
The FELA musical was spectacular and the Winspear is a great place to take something like that in...that was a damn fine Sunday afternoon
ZBo finally scores with putback @ 9:29 mark in 4th. season low is 3 vs nyk march 27
9:26, Z-Bo with first basket of the Western Conference finals. Those of who who had the under win.
9:28, Z-Bo tips in a rebound. And, of course, SA responds with a 3.
Hollins knows that's not Prince he has in, right?
I understand why they built the San Antonio arena away from the Riverwalk, but still don't like it.
Z-BO lives. A little.
9:40 left: Will Z-Bo score? Don't turn that dial!
Austin Daye should be nicknamed "the surrender"
Notice how after the first option doesn't pan out for the Spurs they go to a second set with other options. Knicks just went isolation Melo.
Parker whips the ball around like a nunchuck when darting through the lane.
That drive by Parker was a walk in any playground, gym and arena outside San Antonio
And now Austin Daye is in? Why would you play a lineup with four smalls and RANDOLPH as your rim protector?
Now Austin Daye coming in. Lionel is searching deep
So as Austin Daye prepares to enter game, all Griz have played but Jon Leuer. And just you wait.
Here comes the kitchen sink. Mr. Austin Daye.
Keyon Dooling: -6 in 4 minutes. Tony Wroten: -4 in 1 minute. So yeah, I'd give Bayless another shot. Or play Conley 48 minutes.
Griz with only 9 turnovers. Seems like 90.
There are plenty of ways to contribute if your shot isn’t falling.
getting hit by a pitch at least gets you on base though
Coming out of quarter break, Grizzlies apparently run something that's news to Lionel Hollins, who slams scorer's table in frustration.
Stop harping on Z-Bo being scoreless. It’s his entire game that’s off. Duncan only has 4 points but has 10 rebs, 4 ssts, 2 blocks.
Humberto Quintero headed to Miami with the Phillies. Chooch staying in Miami for an MRI on his hamstring. No decision on DL yet.
What is this lineup? Wroten AND Allen at the same time?
When Bayless passed that ball to Tony on the wing with 15 left on clock, Hollins wheeled and smacked the scorer's table.
Only Grizzlies player w/ a positive plus-minus is Ed Davis (+5), who saw only 5 minutes of action.
Welp, replied to the wrong person.
Conley still in Zbo's ear as Zach is set to check back in
Tricky to know the moment to know you got most out of bench guys, but safe to say it was when lead got cut to 6. Disaster after that
Cliff Lee was wearing a t-shirt that read, "Don't worry, be Charlie." Always sound advice.
Guy staggering around vainly trying to catch beach balls dropped from catwalk. At first, I thought it was Z-Bo.
Matt Bonner has 12 points today. Last year, he had 31 the entire postseason.
Griz were supposed to hold for final shot but get a wild Wroten shot, foul and gift the Spurs 2 more points. End of 3Q: Griz trail 73-57
Might be time for Hollins to consider starting Pondexter and saving Tony Allen for guarding Manu. Bayless can be backup PG.
FYI Matt Bonner has also played in Italy early in his career, with Messina in 2003-04: 19.2ppg and 9.3 shooting with 36.2% from the arc
Huge, huge, huge quarter close for Spurs. After lead cut to six, an 11-1 run. Lead up to 73-57 heading to 4Q.
Nevermind, Manu didn't decline the ball screen. Diaw snuck around at the last minute to beat Memphis' coverage.
In pregame presser, Pop responds thoughtfully when asked if he tells his team about Griz comebacks: "No."
Horrible end to the quarter. Terrible clock management by Wroten. And last play, they cheated and Manu declined the screen for a layup.
Ed Davis has best plus/minus on the Grizzlies. Just sayin'.
Griz will have a fun film session tomorrow.
You know how kids always think of their teachers as robots who cease to exist during the summer? I've always viewed Matt Bonner that way.
