Mostly, the pick would cost money. The source emphasized that GSWs haven't made any decisions. Could look for more veteran help.
NBA source: If they choose, GSWs believe they can acquire either 1st- or 2nd round pick in this draft. They have no picks at the moment.
To quote Ralph Wiggum, whenever I get coffee at the Dunkin Donuts in Penn Station, it tastes like burning.
Yahoo reporting the Atlanta Hawks could choose CSKA Moscow's Ettore Messina as their new coach.
Long post on why Pop benched Tim Duncan and why it worked coming shortly.
Cody Zeller does 17 reps of 185 bench. Anyone who lifts seriously will tell you bench is almost worthless move but that's a good #.
I know Kelly has a foot injury, so he can't run right now. But 14.8% body fat? He must love that "Hot Donuts Now" sign.
Just saw Indiana's Cody Zeller put up 185 lbs 17 times (depending on whether they count the final one) on the press. That ain't weak.
Duke's Ryan Kelly had by far the highest body-fat content at the NBA draft combine at 14.8%. Only 2 others were above 10%.
Duke PG Seth Curry officially stands 6' 1" without shoes, 6' 3" with shoes. He's at 9 percent body fat, highest among PGs attending combine.
So happy to break out the Wash/Dead Prez theme song again today. The great Ron Washington joins us at 3:00 on the Ben & Skin Show - 105.3 FM
Ricky Ledo was great yesterday but he's struggled quite a bit today. Not shooting or defending well & seems to lack confidence. Project guy?
What makes that unlikely for George Hill is that we don't know when his 24-hour symptom-free period will start.
So Rudy Gobert can't jump. When you can stand flat-footed and reach 9' 7" off the floor, with 7-8 1/2 wingspan, does it matter?
Possible to miss only 1 game from a concussion under current NBA policy. Darrell Arthur suffered one on Friday, played Monday.
Pretty obvious name to watch for Kings GM position: Travis Schlenk from the Warriors. Vivek knows him well.
The Celtics bench in that Game 7 in 2009: Eddie House, Stephon Marbury, Brian Scalabrine, Tony Allen, Gabe Pruitt, Mikki Moore, Bill Walker
Jason Kidd has not scored a single point over the past nine games for the Knicks. Jason Kidd has missed all 17 of his attempts from field
Cody Zeller with the fastest sprint time among bigs 3.15 sec
Four years ago today, the Orlando Magic eliminated the KG-less Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Kenny Kadji with a surprising 38" max vert and a 34" standing vert. Very surprising.
Just learned that Popeye Jones' son has a chance to be the No. 1 pick in the NHL Draft. Yeah, hockey! Who knew?
Mason Plumlee with a 10.89 sec lane agility drill and a 3.29 3/4 court sprint. Good numbers. No surprise.
Gonzaga lottery bound C Kelly Olynyk stands 6' 10.75" without shoes and 7' 0" with shoes. His wingspan is 6' 9.75" and he's at 6.7 body fat.
Mike Woodson will address the media via conference call at 1 p.m. Team is off today in anticipation of Game 6 tomorrow in Indianapolis
Good Morning & Congratulations to all the new 2013 Graduates celebrating a huge accomplishment today!
Fairly long two on two half-court session here among the SGs giving us a decent chance to evaluate players' ball-handling/on-ball defense.
Fan feedback: What impressed you most about New Orleans PG Brian Roberts' play during the second half of the 2012-13 season?
Cody Zeller with a 37.5" max vert and a good 10.82 sec lane agility drill. Best athlete of the centers here from a testing standpoint.
Cavs GM Chris Grant says he doesn't think this is weak draft. Also, expect Cavs to try to be bigger players in free agency than recent years
On Zeller's wingspan: 6-10 3/4 isn't great for a 7-footer, but it's nearly three inches longer than the 6-8 reported during the season.
At combine so not exactly!
Thing to keep in mind is there are plenty of guys in the NBA who couldn't shoot a lick between age 18-20 and developed into solid shooters.
Rudy Gobert with a 25 inch standing vertical and a 29" max vert. Not great numbers.
How B.J. Young shot 40% for 3 as a freshman is one of the world's great mysteries. He's shot the ball 100 different ways here. None working.
For all those saying players could wear lifts: have everyone wear the same brand/type of shoes when being measured.
Gotta feel for Archie Goodwin. He really can't buy a basket here in Chicago. Seems to be a mental thing at this point. He's better than this
Charles Woodson's agent tells AP Woodson will visit with Oakland on Tuesday...would've gone sooner, but he's doing charity work in Ann Arbor
Without shoes UCLA lottery prospect G/F Shabazz Muhammad stands 6' 4.75". With shoes he's 6' 6.25". He's at 9 percent body fat.
Cody Zeller isn't participating in drills but his strong measurements (wingspan, body fat, vertical) make the combine a win for him
Cody Zeller with a VERY impressive 35.5" standing vertical. Wow. Mason Plumlee 30.5" standing vert
Will ask one more time re: measurements from Pre-Draft camp--why do they bother measuring without shoes? Does anyone play without shoes?
Allen Crabbe and Tim Hardaway Jr seem to be showing the highest skill-level in the shooting guard group. Caldwell-Pope struggling again.
Also, Kenny Kadji: 6-8 3/4 without shoes, 6-10 with shoes (241.6 pounds)
Two Magic strength coaches -- Joe Rogowski and Anthony Harvey -- are helping run the tests, as are other teams' strength coaches.
Two important NBA combine numbers for Shane Larkin: Height without shoes 5-10 1/4. With shoes: 5-11 1/2. (Also, weight 170.8).
The physical tests, like the vertical jump, are underway at the NBA Draft Combine.
Seattle group could not have been any stronger. Deep pocketed, passionate owner(s). Arena deal. Disappointed, but their time will come.
Steven Adams with a 28.5 inch standing vertical leap
SG crop is playing something resembling actual basketball now - 4 on 3 half-court. Unfortunately too little to draw any real conclusions...
Excited to spend next 2 weeks in 2 cities I've never been to: San Antonio + Memphis. Right now Dry Rub BBQ is a -130 favorite over TexMex.
Steven Adams vertical looked really impressive from where I saw it. He can get up for a 7 footer.
Five minutes at NBA Draft Combine in Chicago, friend comes over, shaking his head: "Your Mayor. Wow"
Proposed book: collected first-person accounts of City Hall reporters during Ford's tenure. I'll buy 10 copies.
That said, some teams don't like Oladipo's game, think he's just an athlete. Hearing Cavs one of them, although not directly from them.
Indiana G Victor Oladipo came off very well at NBA Draft Combine. Looked great in drills, strong interviews with teams, a hit w/the media.
How old is the Axtell story? E-N called me on spring break to help cover it. And I couldn't get email at the folks' house.
If Heat make NBA Finals, their home dates would be: Thu. June 6, Sun. June 9, Tue. June 18 and Thu. June 20. Road: June 11, 13, 16.
Congratulations to all my USC friends getting hammered at the 9-0 right now before graduation.
Ownership sources agree the involvement of David Stern was critical in the process. Kings were in constant contact. Seattle group wasn't.
Sources also say that hedge fund manager Chris Hansen will not file any lawsuits in relation to the Kings/Seattle situation.
Steven Adams actually shot 72% from the floor in 15 footer on Thursday.
League sources say owners offered to pay Hansen-Ballmer group the $30 million non-refundable deposit they paid the Maloofs. They declined
Truth is, Lakers fans are mostly numb right now.
Combine stats: Heaviest Colton Iverson 262.8, tallest Kenny Kadji 7-3, most body fat Ryan Kelly 14.8, shortest Pierre Jackson 5-10.5
Notable spring/summer Texas graduates: Vince Young, Case McCoy, Austin "169 pitches" Wood, and ... Luke Axtell.
The money is great for the trust fund babies, but the Lakers always have to do a lot of splainin' about that huge TV deal. Yes, but...
When the Lakers have won big, they've always had a great player in the post. Could they find themselves without both Pau and DHo next year?
Woulda been good training for Jim Buss to dial people up and ask 'em for those big bucks for season tickets. That's why Jeanie's so sharp
The Lakers season ticket sales people are dialing up folks+having interesting conversations about next year. Who'll be back+who won't.
Twitter game! Longest possible string of linked NBA first and last names. Example: CP3 + Paul George + George Hill = Chris Paul George Hill
I'll say this about Shabazz: He isn't ducking the competition. Most top prospects sit out here every year. Muhammad has been on the court.
As many are noting, Spurs-Grizz reg season included key absences on both sides & a scheduling quirk. That's the NBA. Still very competitive.
Steven Adams continues to tantalize GM's with his potential. Having a very good two days here. His high skill level is real.
Spurs have the depth to give the Grizz problems. Grizz have Gasol & Randolph. Whichever asset outweighs the other should be the difference
Teams are all over the map on Mike Muscala. Some thing he's a major sleeper. Others don't think he's a NBA player at all. I like him a lot.
Tony Parker made more 3-point shots than 2-point shots last night. No way that's happened before.
Jeff Withey clearly more of a 5 on 5 guy. Body doesn't look great compared to other big men, and he hasn't been so impressive in the drills.
Spahija for Croatian NT? Repesa: 'He is available and he is ready to take the national team. He is a great coach'
Gorgui Dieng would be an interesting prospect for Atlanta Hawks if still available in middle of the first round. Size and athleticism.
Kelly Olynyk clearly the most skilled big man here. Looks like a guard with his handle and jumper. Measured just 6-10 wingspan vs 7-0 height
Splitter, Diaw and Leonard, who all played exceptionally well against the Warriors in spots, will have to be even better against the Grizz
There will be nothing flashy about the Memphis Grizzlies vs San Antonio Spurs series, just rough and tough basketball. The way I like it.
Steven Adams continues to show a better than expected skill-level in the drills. Doesn't seem to be thinking as much. Just competing hard.
Repesa on Croatian NT at Eurobasket: 'But if Repesa will not be the coach, then Croatia will have a better coach than Repesa"
Repesa to FIBAEurope on EuroBasket: "Malaga has an option on my contract Two days after the last official game, they will take a decision"
I'm hoping to have something of substance on concussions later today. Travel and other tasks may delay a bit.
Just spoke to @DallasMavs coach Rick Carlisle, who says there's guys he likes in the draft that others might not like.
Think the Grizz have a better shot at stopping the Miami championship parade than the Spurs, what say you? Not that chances good either way
Forbes reports a range of 5 days out (Michael Kidd-Gilchrist) to 27 (Chris Kaman), but not a comprehensive list.
NBA types, help me out: what's the least time missed by a concussed player under the league's new concussion protocol?
Only true 7-footer (w/out shoes): Rudy Gobert. Steven Adams, Colton Iverson, Kelly Olynyk, Mason Plumlee, Jeff Withey, Zeller 7-feet w/shoes
So much was made about Harrison Barnes and whether he could contribute during big games ... Good to see him thriving on the big stage
Toronto really is the centre of the universe today.
Rihanna's nasty Instagram could turn into turning point of series. It finally got JR going whereas Woody had failed.
In reg season, Spurs/Grizz split 4 gms, home team won each. Two gms went to OT, another decided by 2 pts. Only 1 meeting post-Gay trade.
Harrison Barnes became first rookie to average 16 points and six rebounds during playoffs since David Robinson in 1990 (min 10 games)
Looking at the official measurements: Cody Zeller with a wingspan of 6-10 3/4, wider than previously listed. Zeller also with 4.75% body fat
There's all this success, and all these hungry egos. They'll be sitting around in hoops heaven soon enough, arguing over who gets the credit
Gosh, that first Warriors-Kings playoff series is going to be magical in both arenas.
Next point on Len, courtesy of Tom Penn: Big guy with a stress fracture in his foot already. Giant red flag if you're a GM.
But let's keep this straight. We wouldn't know about Tex or Phil if it weren't for MJ. They guided the storm.
Fran Fraschilla on Alex Len: "I'd be willing to take him in the top 3 because its hard to find guys that size who can be a starting center."
Krause worked insanely hard as a scout, disrespected at every turn. But he identified Phil as a coaching talent and Tex as absolute genius.
PG Shane Larkin, from Orlando and UMiami, had the 2nd-lowest body fat percentage at the combine, at 3.8 percent.
I don't expect that kind of free fall for Muhammad. That it's not hard to find NBA people thinking it could happen means something, though.
Yes, Jerry Krause is perhaps basketball's ultimate asshole, but Phil would be coaching junior high ball somewhere were it not for Krause.
The Phil Jackson book I would like to read would be the one he writes about Tex Winter. I hope he does it.
The U.S. team will now now compete against a squad from Russia and Canada but hopefully refunds will be made available to the Iranian fans.
In all fairness, Phil's opposition to Kobe was a good thing in many ways. Good coaching. Kobe knows he was blessed to play for Tex+Phil.
No official reason was given for their abrupt departure after competing against the U.S. in New York on Wednesday.
Michael is the man for having done what he did in the first place. Kobe is the man for embracing that challenge in the way no other could.
Woodson very superstitious and works with what won. Doubtful Kidd or Stoud play in second half rest of series.
The Iranian national wrestling team was scheduled to compete against the U.S. in L.A. on Sunday but they have left and departed for Iran.
Manu with some vintage Manu passes in this game -- lobs over fronts in the post, long transition hit-aheads, no-look jump passes. Genius.
Michael vs. Kobe? I feel privileged to have spent part of my career covering both. No need for sweeping statements. They're different.
Phil was a masterful coach. As Krause said, he was masterful at picking Tex's brain. It was the combo of the 2. Tex+Phil. Or Phil+Tex.
Last time there was an earthquake in Toronto, I was in the office. I believe I screamed, "I don't want to die in here."
Watching the "butt fumble" every Friday morning never gets old.
Basketball news: I added it up and I mentioned Rihanna more than Amar'e yesterday. The NBA. It's fantastic.
Top NBA 3 point shooter from Thur NBA Draft Combine: Tim Hardaway Jr 19-for-25
According to NBA, impossible to predict/set a timetable on player returning from concussion. Various stages, tests that must be passed.
After 2002, Phil relegated Tex to a seat behind him on the bench. Tex was deeply hurt by that too. Saw Phil as hungry for the credit.
Headlines from tomorrow: Crackin' and Quakin'
Without Krause matching Phil+Tex, Tex would have retired. Tex was the triangle mind. Phil made it come alive with the players. Phil was key
When Tim Duncan worked with Tex+Phil at All Stars for the 1st time, he told me, "It's obvious who's the brains are behind that operation."
ROB FORD JUST MOVED THE EARTH.
Worst shooters from NBA Draft Combine on Thur: Myck Kabongo (32%), Shabazz Muhammad (36%), Andre Roberson (42%)
Phil+Charley Rosen did a special on Phil for NBA TV. Didn't mention Tex. Tex was stunned and deeply hurt. That was another undercurrent.
Phil's new book confirms a lot of things for me, the greatest of which was the role Tex Winter's wisdom and passion played in his success.
ASU's Carrick Felix has the lowest body fat percentage of 61 draft combine invitees. He's at 3.3%. Duke's Ryan Kelly has the worst at 14.8%.
If Tex hadn't been on that bench to balance out the response to Kobe, I'm not sure the Lakers would have won all those titles.
Top shooters from NBA Draft Combine on Thur: Mike Muscala (76%), Tony Snell (74%), Reggie Bullock & Grant Jerrett (72%), Allen Crabbe (70%)
The fundamental difference between Tex and Phil in dealing with Kobe is that Tex respected Kobe. Phil took years to warm to that notion.
Coming to you LIVE from Day 2 of the NBA Combine in Chicago...
Telenet Ostend's head coach Dario Gjergja has been named Coach of the Year in Belgium
Of the entire generation, Kobe was the one to embrace the challenge of MJ. Others recoiled from it. Understandably.
Tex had his own criticisms of Kobe, but he always felt Phil was out of balance in dealing with him. Phil's way of playing to Shaq.
Tex Winter often confided to me he felt compelled to defend Kobe when Phil started in on him. If only I could hear what Tex had to say now
As always, follow one or more of the insane people that have decided to cover Toronto city council for a living.
Reached 110,000 followers yesterday. Thanks! Do you know any account with more followers that's still not verified by Twitter? I'm curious.
Has anybody made a crack the case joke yet?
Official Combine measurements have been releaased. Trey Burke was 6-1 1/4 in shoes, as he told reporters on Thurs.
Pakistan 231/7 v Scotland.
Watching Dub-Spurs from last night after a late one at MSG, and Matt Bonner just hit a jump hook in the post. That was delightful.
The gym here in Chicago is pretty much empty, but the combine gets underway in about an hour: http://t.co/KDrftjaSyU
Downside of making fun of Nats jersey fouls: chance encounters with the foulers http://t.co/TtVKiLzvbt
The final setup for Day 2 of the NBA Draft Combine is underway. Photo: http://t.co/8E4M19pC1Q
A lot of terrible Kings logo tattoos will be designed this weekend.
My eyelids aren't really trying to cooperate.
