Omer says he does not care about playing against the rockets more. Says he is only focused on his team
Omer says he hopes the team can stay healthier this year. Is excited to play for a defensive-minded coach.
Dell says he went out of his way to get Asik. Mentions elite rebounding, playoff experience. -MP
Starting now. http://t.co/TwQVWwkxv2
We're awaiting for Pelicans' news conference to start. It was pushed back to 1:30 p.m.
Two spots. Guessing Dell and Asik. -MP http://t.co/9J79DN1hO2
Pelicans will monitor results of other Vegas games today. Won't know their tourney seed until about 9:30 CT. Right now it's 5 (of 24 teams)
Press conference moved to 1 pm CDT (UTC -5).
NBA has approved Pelicans' trade with Houston and center Omer Asik will be formally introduce at 1 today.
Won't even try to explain, but appears Pelicans have clinched a bye in Vegas tourney. They are 5 seed (of 24) but may drop a few spots Tues.
Danng. Good game!!!
Pelicans PG Russ Smith finished with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists in NOLA's 88-86 loss to Spurs
Russ Smith couldn't get up a shot after the Spurs trapped him. Pelicans lose 88-86 for their first summer league defeat.
Russ Smith tries to get shot off before buzzer but swarmed by two Spurs defenders near baseline. Doesn't draw iron. Spurs win 88-86
Spurs' Jeff Ayres converts layup and-one for three-point play, putting San Antonio back up 88-86. Pelicans timeout with ball. 6.3 seconds
Pelicans in close one - leading Spurs 86-85 with 19.6 seconds remaining.
Pelicans missed 2 free throws. Spurs now have the ball down 86-85 with 19 seconds left. Coming down to last possession again
DeQuan Jones drains big 3 to give Pelicans 86-85 lead with 37 seconds left
Free throws severely hampering Pelicans (11-for-24), but within 77-76 at 4:08 left. Josh Carter has 15 points, all on his 5 three-pointers
Pelicans hanging around most of 2nd half, down 75-70 at 4:56 of 4th. Jam-packed Russ Smith stat line: 11 points, 5 boards, 7 assists
Pels trailing Spurs 64-61 at end of third quarter. Courtney Fells has 19 points.
Russ Smith has been almost exclusively a second-half scorer in summer league. Has 7 quick pts in 3rd quarter (all on and-ones). Total 9 pts
Tyreke Evans is all in - he's among the fans watching Pels-Spurs summer league game at the Thomas &Mack Center.
Patric Young continues to show knack for blocking or at least altering shots on D. Also very active on offensive boards/tipping balls out
Russ Smith missed five of six shots but had five assists in the first half.
FWIW a Pelicans win vs. Spurs would clinch a first-round bye in the summer league tournament. A loss (and 2-1 record) would make that iffy
If Pels win today they will get a first -round bye in the playoff round of the Samsung NBA Summer League.
Courtney Fells only Pelicans' player in double figures with 14 points at end of first half.
Russ Smith halftime stats update: 2 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists (seemed like he had a couple more), 3 turnovers in 12 minutes
Pelicans trailing Spurs 47-39 at halftime in summer league.
Pelicans defended better Sunday against Lakers than they have so far today against Spurs.
Maybe - just maybe - Courtney Fells' game is closer to Morrow's than we thought. And Fells is - as he said - more athletic than Morrow.
Pels PG Russ Smith showing the burst to get in the lane and score in traffic. He has a quick first step.
Josh Howard has played 6 1/2 minutes and scored two points and grabbed two rebounds against Spurs.
Courtney Fells confidence is sky-high right now. He's up to 14 points in 9 minutes. Since Sunday, he's shooting 8-for-11 on three-pointers
Pels' Courtney Fells strikes again - 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and he came off the bench. He might need to start.
Arinze Onuaku has found his way back to the Pelicans playing on their summer league team.
Pels' Courtney Fells making his case for a roster spot - 12 points in just over five minutes on the floor
Another thing I like that Russ Smith is doing: Keeping his dribble alive in lane, scanning for open guys, a la Steve Nash or Rajon Rondo
Pelicans leading Spurs, 24-22, after first quarter.
Pels' Courtney Fells striking again from 3-point range. I'm convinced this guy can shoot. Made his first three shots - all 3s.
Mr. Instant Offense, Courtney Fells, checks in and immediately drains three straight treys for 9 points. He had 25 points Sunday vs. Lakers
Pelicans trailing Spurs 18-14 in the first quarter. Pels look a little a sluggish early from having to play yesterday.
Russ Smith showing such a good feel for setting guys up for shots. Has to reduce turnovers, but you'd think he was a point guard in college
Patric Young always appears to be in the right spot in the post to get rebounds.
Pelicans and Spurs have tipped off in summer league play.
A little over an hour till tip-off of Pelicans (2-0) and Spurs. Russ Smith averaging 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 2.5 steals
League source says Pelicans are going to sign John Salmons,
No confirmation, but it looks like the Pelicans are working to improve their roster beyond acquiring center Omer Asik.
League source says small forward Omri Casspi ''most likely'' will be waived by Pelicans once NBA approves three-team trade.
First day of camp at Shepard of the hills!!! It's gonna be a great week
No confirmation yet on Pelicans plan to release Omri Casspi, reported first by ESPN's Marc Stein.
Still think the Pelicans are looking closely at one of their summer league small forwards to emerge for a roster spot.
Down and it was great. People asked, "Why did I ever question him?" Did we learn? Can we let this play out? -MM
I saw a lot of people panicking the last 2 weeks. Worrying that Dell didn't know what he was doing. Assuming this and that. Then, trade came
Watching Casspi last night, I could not help but notice how long his shot took to get off and how it was hard for him to guard wings -MM
Casspi was never going to be more than backup any way. Very possible that team likes Miller, Southerland, Fells or some other min guy better
Last two times a team gave up a good 1st round pick for a player on a short term deal: Lowry and Gortat. Both re-signed.
Grade based on the assumption that the Pels MIGHT keep the pick? IMO, it is just as likely Pels keep pick as Asik leaves. -MM
If others can lower the Pels grade on the Asik trade based on the assumption that Asik MIGHT leave next summer, then why can't we raise the
I was confused about the number of gives and receives required. Sorry again, - 42
To clarify, each team must GIVE, each must RECEIVE, and each must interact with 2 teams. Ely going to WAS instead of HOU suffices. - 42
Apologies. Ely being send to WAS satisfies the trade rule. They need not send something to NOLA. This is purely my misreading. - 42
Washington will be sending a trinket to New Orleans in the 3-way Asik deal. Don't get too excited, though. - 42
Earlier, I left out the well-known protected first going to Houston. Sorry, just an accidental omission. Will be in the article. - 42
cont . . . Also send had to lose all cap holds other than Miller, gave up NTMLE, Bi-annual. Still have Room MLE, min exception. Trades. - 42
To sum up. Ely, Gee, Hopson can bring back Asik, Casspi. Pels send out cash, get cash, send out Clips' top-55 protected 2nd. cont . . . - 42
As David Weiner pointed out to me, the Pelicans can ignore incoming minimum salary players in trades. So Casspi can just be a throw in. - 42
Hopson to Pels for Cash is official. He has been traded into space after Roberts deal, can be dealt in aggregate immediately. - 42
Patric Young: "Guys are going out there making plays. No one is trying to show out, and do more than what they’re capable of doing."
Now that Hopson deal is done, adding Babbitt to get Casspi helps Houston shed salary. Same deal as before with Babbitt / Casspi swap? - 42
