Also, the Golden State Warriors had some brief dialogue with the Hawks about Smith, but sources said it never rose to a serious level. Ferry's insistence on including Stephen Curry -- and not including Andris Biedrins, who is owed $9 million next season -- put the brakes on those discussions. CBSSports.com

Biedrins said he's adopted the thinking he can't get his offensive groove back unless he puts up the shots in the game. He was 0-for-2 in the double- overtime loss to Denver. But he had another breakthrough: making a pair of free throws for the first time since Jan. 26, 2011 vs. New Orleans. He said the support of fans -- the encouragement he receives when he steps to the line, or the cheers he gets when his hustle leads to an extra possession -- are significant drops in his confidence bucket. "It's really nice. It just means they care about me," he said. "I heard some boos, but that's all right. That's normal. Obviously, I didn't have a great season before and they're kind of a (upset). That's OK. But it feels great that your home crowd is really behind you. They saw I was playing well and they give me more and more energy. It was an awesome feeling." San Jose Mercury-News

Neither Biedrins nor Anderson was his team's star player. While O'Neal had problems shooting free throws throughout his career, he never stopped attacking the basket or looking for the ball. "I can only talk about myself for this, I personally wouldn't or couldn't allow myself to lose confidence," said Hall of Famer Reggie Miller. "The reason being is teammates can sense that, when you're a captain or team leader you have to be above the fray." For role players, the stakes are different. "What motivated me was fear," said former Raptors coach Sam Mitchell, who played 13 NBA seasons. "Fear of failure. Fear of embarrassing myself. That was my biggest fear, that I would embarrass myself. And so I worked hard so I could minimize my fear of embarrassment." NBA.com

Biedrins was the only Warriors player who didn’t participate in optional workouts earlier this month, and then coach Mark Jackson publicly expressed disappointment about it. But Biedrins was alongside his teammates on Monday, the first official day of training camp. “My commitment level has always been the same as it is now – and like it was before,” said Biedrins, entering his ninth NBA season. “That doesn’t mean just because I wasn’t here I wasn’t practicing. I was practicing hard, twice a day, for the past month. I feel great. As long as I can help, come in here in great shape at the start of training camp with the other guys, that’s almost the same thing.” CSNBayArea.com

“I think it is (possible to get back to where he was),” Biedrins said. “I think physically I’m there. A lot has to do with just kind of believing in yourself more than I am. I’ve had frustrating years and you kind of stop believing in yourself so much as you did before – like three years ago. That’s the main reason. But I think I can get there.” CSNBayArea.com

Myers said he doesn’t know if Biedrins can be traded or bought out, but he’ll have a better idea at the end of this season. An already interesting position — the center of attention — just got a lot more intriguing, and we haven’t even started camp yet. San Francisco Chronicle

Biedrins has been a colossal bust since signing his six-year, $62 million contract in 2008. With two years and some $18 million left on his deal, the once promising Biedrins seems to have sealed his fate with his head coach – or at least is starting in the same hole he’s been in for the last two years. League sources say the Warriors have tried in the past to talk contract buyout, and have tried trading his contract several times over the last two years and have found little interest in either course of action. While Jackson’s disappointment with Biedrins was clear, his support of oft-injured point guard Steph Curry was equally clear, especially when asked about the role of newly acquired guard Jarrett Jack. Latvia's state prosecutor has opened a criminal case against Golden State Warriors center Andris Biedrins for alleged income tax evasion. Aiga Senberga, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office, says Biedrins and two others are suspects. She declined to identify the other two. Senberga said Monday that if Biedrins is found guilty he could face a fine of $70,000 or a maximum five-year prison sentence. She did not say how much Biedrins allegedly owes in taxes. NBA.com

I’m hearing the Warriors do like Wilson Chandler but don’t believe he is worth the No. 7 pick so that deal is unlikely to happen. The Nuggets would have to take back Andris Biedrins or Richard Jefferson to make it worthwhile for the Warriors. However, if the Warriors trade down a bit, maybe to 12 or 14, that Chandler deal may be in play. That could be a high enough jump for Denver (#20) and the Warriors could still get someone they like at No. 20 – whether Terrence Jones, Quincy Miller, Moe Harkless or even Festus Ezeli Contra Costa Times

The fans have started booing the beleaguered center during pregame introductions, he quietly hoped he would be included in a trade- deadline deal, and the Warriors believe there is still a market for the 25-year-old 7-footer. "This is the franchise that gave me an opportunity, and I have spent my whole career here, so I'm not one of those guys who is going to demand a trade or say, 'I don't like it here,' " Biedrins said. "We have to finish this season and see where it goes from there. We'll have a talk after the season and evaluate the situation, but I don't like to complain about things." San Francisco Chronicle

At shootaround before the game, Jackson said he had a good conversation with his starting center. Some air needed to be cleared after Andris Biedrins expressed to the media his desire for a bigger role. "I would like to play a little bit more, but this is the situation," Biedrins said Monday. "I have to accept it. I have to do what they tell me to do. That's the way it is." Oakland Tribune
