Free agent guard B.J. Young – a recent release of the Rockets – will sign a deal with Houston’s D-League team, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, a league source told RealGM. Young was released by the Rockets early in training camp, but the former Arkansas standout received interest from the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadlephia 76ers before deciding to join the Rockets’ burgeoning pipeline of young talent, a league source said. Arkansas guard BJ Young said Thursday he will enter the 2013 NBA Draft, forgoing his final two years of eligibility with the Razorbacks. Young led Arkansas with 15.2 points per game and 104 assists as a sophomore, and was voted second-team all-Southeastern Conference. He joins forward Marshawn Powell as players to declare for the draft this off-season. “This is his dream and as a coach I encourage him to pursue that dream," Arkansas coach Mike Anderson said in a statement. "I gave him the pros and cons of his decision and he chose to enter the draft. BJ has become a well-rounded player, leading us in scoring and assists and he became a more active rebounder.” NWAonline.com

BJ Young gave teammates and coaches hints that he would return to Arkansas for his sophomore season. They weren’t sure, though. Not until the second-team and freshman All-Southeastern Conference guard made his decision to return to school official when he was recognized for his All-SEC honors at the men’s basketball banquet Monday night. “I just want to be first team next year,” Young said, prompting a loud cheer from the crowd of around 170 Arkansas fans in attendance in the Broyles Complex. “Hopefully make the tournament as a team. After earning second-team All-SEC and All-Freshman team honors in his first season as a Razorback, Arkansas guard BJ Young has submitted his name for consideration in the the 2012 NBA draft. Young, however, will not hire an agent, and will continue taking classes at the University of Arkansas in order to retain his amateur status, and reserve the right to return to Arkansas next year. “BJ is using this time to gather information about his draft potential,” Anderson said. “By submitting his name for consideration for this year’s draft he will be able to find out what the scouts see in his game and make an informed decision about his future.” Fayetteville Flyer
