The dark horse is Brandon Roy: The 2006 NBA Rookie of the Year told CSNNW.com back in January that he would love to get into the coaching profession immediately if his knees were unable to hold up, ending his playing career. Unlike most All-Stars who have dominated this league using their athleticism, Roy did it mostly with his smarts and knowing how to play angles on both sides of the ball. Players that played the game from the neck up, tend to be better coaches. Plus, it would be a great story in Portland. CSNNW.com

The Minnesota Timberwolves today announced that the team has waived guard Brandon Roy. "We wish Brandon and his family all the best in the future," said Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Flip Saunders. NBA.com

The Minnesota Timberwolves are formalizing the release of Brandon Roy, ridding themselves of the $5.3 million owed him in the 2013-14 season, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. An announcement is expected in the near future. Yahoo! Sports

Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn said he reached the conclusion in late January that Brandon Roy, struggling to recover from surgery on his right knee, would not play again this season. Nearly three months later, another conclusion has been reached regarding Roy's future with the team: "You should assume he will not be playing with us next season," Kahn said. St. Paul Pioneer Press

When asked if Roy had reached a point where he knew he wouldn't play again, Kahn said, "He had several moments that were very hard for him this year ... not just one." Roy, who turns 29 in July, has not played since the first half of a Nov 9 game against Indiana. He was experiencing soreness in his right knee at halftime and did not return for the second half. With Brandon Roy not expected to return next season, Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman said finding a "quality" shooting guard will be one of the team's top offseason priorities. "That's something we'll really have to look around for," Adelman said before the team's game against Phoenix on Saturday night, April 13, at Target Center. "It's too hard to play point guards at that spot. Luke (Ridnour) is overmatched all the time playing bigger two-guards.We have to find a way to get more size there." St. Paul Pioneer Press

Brandon Roy has a two-year contract after playing just five games, but next season’s $5 million salary is not guaranteed so the answer is no. Kahn said he still considers it a gamble that was worth taking because the team protected itself financially next season and because it added Kirilenko, Alexey Shved and Chase Budinger on the wing last summer, not knowing, though, that Budinger would go down, too. The Wolves still could trade Roy’s salary slot to make a trade work come draft time. Minneapolis Star-Tribune

PP: Are you concerned with skeptics who feel Roy should not have been signed? He has not played since Nov. 9. Glen Taylor: It's fair criticism ... for me and David. We did take a risk, and it was proven to be a wrong risk. There were other players out there with some experience who we could have gotten, who would have helped us at a position (shooting guard) where we needed help. We're out of the money this year (approximately $5 million), but based on the contract we have, we don't have to pay him next year if he doesn't play. St. Paul Pioneer Press

When Roy was a rookie, he was the same way - family oriented, never caught up in the money, women and partying that can lure many in the NBA. How did he do it? “My biggest thing was I was focused,’’ Roy said. “And I always put my family first. I loved being around my family. And staying out of those positions are really the only way you can prevent them, so I just kind of stayed away from certain things. And then, I just had a determination to win. When you are giving 100 percent on the floor, for me, I’m kind of too tired to do anything else.’’ Oregonian

The Trail Blazers called a timeout 5:39 into the game and the jumbo-tron camera swooped in on Roy and suddenly you heard screaming and applauses. It was a standing ovation. The three-time All-Star was all smiles as he waved his hands in a state of shock. “I had a feeling something like that might happen but I didn't think they would do that so early in the game,” Roy told CSNNW.com. “I was completely shocked. I didn't know what to do so I just waved.” CSNNW.com

Now with the Celtics, Lee could be heading to Minnesota, where he would be reunited with one of his former coaches, Rick Adelman, if the T-wolves and Celtics can agree on a deal by today's 3 o'clock NBA trading deadline. Sources say the Celtics could get Brandon Roy from the T-wolves, whose season has fallen apart after another injury to All-Star forward Kevin Love. New York Daily News

The Minnesota Timberwolves were turned down on an offer of Brandon Roy and a first-round pick to Denver for center Timofey Mozgov, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Denver is combing the market further for offers on Mozgov. He will be a restricted free agent this summer, and the emergence of Kosta Koufos could make it hard for Denver to match an offer sheet for Mozgov. Yahoo! Sports

The Timberwolves are trying to include Roy's contract into offers, selling the non-guaranteed value of his 2013-14 year as an appealing factor. Roy is rehabilitating his knees, and neither the Wolves, nor Roy, truly expect he'll be able to play again in the NBA, sources said. Yahoo! Sports
