The Pistons have until late June to exercise their option on Butler's second year, and Van Gundy said "a lot of things will determine that, where we think we're going to be salary structure-wise and everything else." The Pistons likely will wait until after the draft before making a decision on Butler, who gives them an affordable backup at a position of need if they need him. Booth Newspapers

"I'm in a good situation," he said. "I like where we're at, I like what we've been able to accomplish, being better than we were prior, and I feel like I've got my fingerprints all over these guys. So it's a great opportunity to come back and continue the thing on. Or, if not, obviously the best thing for me is to contend. It's either one or the other. But I won't be looking for another situation to start over with some guys and stuff like that again. It's either do this or contend for it all." Booth Newspapers

Devin Kharpertian: Source says Detroit has not made official offer of Jennings/Butler/Jerebko to Nets for Joe Johnson (yet). That offer (as stands) wouldn’t work under the cap. Would need more pieces both ways to make player # & salary fit. Twitter @uuords

Before every game, Pistons veteran Caron Butler pulls point guard Brandon Jennings aside and says: "You have star talent and star capability. Lead us." Brandon Jennings a leader? The Pistons have veterans who can offer spot help to a contender (Augustin, Caron Butler, even Jennings in the right situation). They have bigs they either might want to move, or who have no contractual obligations after this season, or both (Monroe, Smith, Joel Anthony, Jonas Jerebko). They have expiring contracts (Anthony, Jerebko, Monroe, Singler, Gigi Datome). Booth Newspapers

Butler took 4.4 3-point shots in 25 minutes a game last season and made 39.4 percent of them, joining Augustin and shooting guards Jodie Meeks and Cartier Martin as free-agent signees who figure to transform the Pistons’ 3-point shooting threat from meek to potent. “He has a competitive nature to him that drives him at this point,” Pistons general manager Jeff Bower said. “He’s been on good teams. He’s seen and experienced what they’re all about. He sees this as an opportunity to compete, to play a role of significance within a team that has the potential to grow and to create change.” NBA.com

Butler is a free agent again and Durant is making his pitch to convince his friend to re-sign with the Thunder. Durant flew from Los Angeles, where he had been working out, to attend Butler’s basketball camp at Park High School in Racine. “I would love to have him back,” said Durant, the NBA’s reigning MVP. “He can definitely help us. But some things are out of your control; management makes those decisions. But I’d like to have him back.” Racine Journal-Times
