Chris Mullin and Ed Pinckney are close friends dating back to their Big East playing days, and sources told SNY.tv he’s the favorite to fill the third spot, which has remained open since Mullin took the job April 1. “There’s a lot of different candidates,” Mullin said last month. If Pinckney joined the staff, St. John’s would have a loaded set of recruiters going forward. Pinckney is a former NCAA champion and Villanova assistant who knows the recruiting ropes as well as anyone. ZagsBlog.com

The Kings have yet to formally announce their new power structure, but sources say that Divac has supplanted both general manager Pete D'Alessandro and former Kings adviser Chris Mullin -- who just jumped to the college game as the new coach at alma mater St. John's -- as Sacramento's lead basketball decision-maker. The future of D'Alessandro in Sacramento, especially after the departure of his closest ally in the organization in Mullin, is unclear. Sources say, however, that the Kings have already launched a search to add another front-line basketball executive to work alongside Divac whether D'Alessandro stays or departs. ESPN.com

Adam Zagoria: St. John's officially names Chris Mullin head coach. Presser at 1:30 tomorrow. Chris Mullin: 'It’s a surreal experience coming home and returning to St. John’s Univ. This is a role I have been preparing for all of my life. I look forward to mentoring our current and future players, passing along knowledge and aiding in their development to help them reach their goals, similar to the impact Coach Carnesecca had on me thirty years ago." To that end, he is expected to announce that he is hiring a staff that includes a number of candidate who are New Yorkers, have appreciated St. John's and know the ropes of the college game, and especially recruiting. Among the serious candidates — some that he already has consulted with — are Kentucky assistant and fellow alumnus from Brooklyn’s Xaverian Barry Rohrssen, who established a flowing pipeline of New Yorkers to Pitt and has head coaching experience at Manhattan; Iowa State assistant Matt Abdelmassih, a St. John's alum and former hoops manager who is a rising star among assistant coaches and is heavily involved in the recruiting of Long Island blue-chipper Cheick Diallo; Bulls assistant and Bronx product Ed Pinkney who helped Villanova to the 1985 national title and also was a strong recruiting assistant coach for the Wildcats for four seasons; and Emanuel (Book) Richardson of the Bronx, who has regularly scored top recruits including New Yorkers for Xavier and now Arizona. He could hire brother Terence Mullin in some capacity as well. New York Daily News

Sophomore point guard Rysheed Jordan has been mulling going pro, but is said to be intrigued by the Mullin hiring and may consider coming back to play for a coach with as many NBA connections as Mullin. The same is true for junior center Chris Obekpa. Louisiana guard Brandon Sampson, who committed but did not sign, has re-opened recruiting since the move with Lavin but is said to still be considering St. John's. A team with those three and Diallo would be formidable out of the gate. New York Daily News

Tom Ziller: Chris Mullin taking the St. John's coaching job would do nothing to dispel the rumors he wanted to coach the Kings next season pre-Karl. Rumor was Mullin wanted Malone out of the way but didn't want to coach starting in the middle of a season. Wanted camp and a new staff. Twitter @teamziller

St. John's has offered Chris Mullin the opportunity to be its next head basketball coach and he is expected to accept, multiple sources say. The two sides were hammering out final details on a contract Sunday that would make Mullin the successor to Steve Lavin, who was fired Friday after five years at the school. Barring a last-minute snag in the negotiations, the administration is hoping to have a press conference Tuesday or Wednesday. Mullin has spent the past few seasons as an adviser in the Sacramento Kings' front office and was also formerly the general manager of the Golden State Warriors. He has no head-coaching experience, but sources said that St. John's believes Mullin provides a blueprint similar to what Iowa State had when it hired Fred Hoiberg in 2010. CBSSports.com
