Sacramento Kings officials are bringing two Hall of Famers to meet forward Rudy Gay early next week in hopes of convincing him to exercise the option in his contract for next season, sources told Yahoo Sports. Gay has to decide by June 30 whether to exercise a contract option that will pay him $19.3 million next season. What about the philosophical differences between your coach and your front office? Look, I know people talk about that my coach is always focusing on defense, while guys like Mullie (Chris Mullin, adviser) and Petey (D’Alessandro, general manager) are offense-oriented. And that we have offensive players. It’s no secret the game has become an offensive game, with three-point shots, layups, the rule changes. We all see it. So we have to reconcile that. And I think it’s good. If I had everyone who agreed, why would I want them? Sacramento Bee

“But my decision was really swayed by the people in the organization – first and foremost, Vivek Ranadivé and his ownership group. It’s an incredible, impressive group of owners who really have one goal in mind – to make this the best franchise in the NBA. Then, of course, Pete D’Alessandro, the general manager – I’ve worked with him before, I have great respect for him, he’s had great success and to be able to join up with him and to be able to help him get this team to where we all want it, it was very instrumental in my decision. And then, the coaching staff, I have familiarity with Michael Malone and his father, Brendan – I’ve known since I was in high school. “Much like you want to put together a great team on the floor that plays well together, plays to its strengths (and) stays away from its weaknesses, I think Vivek has done that in his hirings on the operations side. For me, when I’m looking at opportunities, my No. 1 (criteria) is what people I’m going to be surrounding myself with – who I’m joining, what the people are like and what’s their vision. Everything was in place, I thought it was a great fit and I’m really excited to be a part of the Kings.” The Kings Blog

Looking forward, which players do you view as franchise cornerstones? “DeMarcus Cousins – to me, he’s one of the most talented big men in the League. He’s obviously a key. I think Isaiah Thomas has been a really nice player for the Kings. I think he’s a good guy – especially for our young guards like Ben McLemore and Ray McCallum – to learn from (as far as) his work ethic, his poise, his approach to the game, his mental toughness. He’s a nice veteran. Jason Thompson, I think is coming along nicely. There’s a bunch of guys – all of them have strengths – (but) I think the key is going to be how they can come together, because individual numbers don’t really translate into success.” The Kings Blog

That elderly man was Chris Mullin, and Chris Mullin is a five-time NBA All-Star, a career 38.4% shooter from beyond the arc, and not elderly. He went 14-for-15, laying waste to all competition. The total domination by Mullin, who was recently hired by the Kings as an adviser to Ranadivé, makes us yearn to see NBA greats participating in more contests with current players. Let’s get Larry Bird or Reggie Miller into the 3-point competition come All-Star weekend. For The Win

O'Neal is the second former player of such stature that Ranadivé has brought in since coming to town. Current Hall of Famer Chris Mullin was the first. In his new role as "Adviser to the Chairman," Ranadivé indicated at Mullin's press conference that he envisions the well-known sharpshooter as a jack of all trades for the organization. Mullin's past experience both as a player and executive is surely to provide the Kings with a boost in many different ways. Ridiculous Upside

Mullin's hiring comes as no surprise. During his time as Warriors minority owner, Ranadive grew to like and admire the former star. He also liked the idea of including a high-profile NBA figure in his organization and has been seeking Mullin's input since he assumed control of the franchise. "I was looking for somebody who was iconic," Ranadive said, "and Chris is iconic. He represents what is great about basketball. Hard work. Teamwork. Excellence. He is part of the model." There were poor drafts and trades and regrettable signings as well. GM's eventually plead guilty to all of the above. But Mullin also was victimized by Chris Cohan's dysfunctional ownership, Robert Rowell's back-room dealing, and the still-puzzling strain in his relationship with his mentor, Nelson. "I would say 34, 42, 48 wins," said Mullin. "We continued improving when I was there. I had some opportunities, some scenarios these last few years, but I always focused on who I'm joining up with as opposed to where it is, or what title it is. And there were no scenarios that came like this. It starts with the people. Knowing this market, and this area. Then looking to the future with the new arena. The vision is right there, on the horizon. This just seemed like a perfect fit." Sacramento Bee
