The All-Star break is generally a time for players to get a brief respite from the grueling grind of the NBA season. Most players take the opportunity to enjoy a few days free from any serious commitment. Pacers swingman C.J. Miles, however, used the break to make the biggest commitment of all. Miles proposed to his girlfriend, Lauren Smith, while the two were on vacation in Cancun. Last night, following the Pacers' first practice after the break, a beaming Miles spoke in great detail with the media about his proposal and the weeks of preparation that went into it. NBA.com

He's a hardship case, an emergency acquisition, a temp worker of sorts. NBA teams can exceed the 15-player limit when at least four players are injured for at least two weeks and miss at least three games. The Pacers have gone beyond that, with Paul George, George Hill, David West, C.J. Watson and Rodney Stuckey rehabbing injuries and C.J. Miles out for the past three games with a migraine. So, they called him at his home in Baldwin, N.Y. last Wednesday evening, about 10 p.m., to invite him to join them for Friday's game at Boston – but even then only after their first choice, Gal Mekel, had visa issues. Problem is, West and Watson could return by the end of the week, and Miles could return anytime, which puts Price's status in jeopardy. NBA.com

On July 2, the Pacers turned their attention to Plan B and agreed to terms with free agent CJ Miles. In Stephenson's view, the Miles' deal sealed his departure from the Pacers. "They didn't have nothing else. They had no more money or anything. That was basically it right there," Stephenson said. "Soon as I said no to that offer, they went and signed CJ. I figured they thought I had no chance of coming back, they just went on and signed CJ. … I felt like it was a wrap after that." Indianapolis Star
