Source: Atlanta Hawks are looking to move Josh Smith, but Brooklyn Nets don't have the necessary pieces to make a deal without including a third team. The Spurs have also been rumored to be interested and, aside from having a built-in level of trust with Hawks GM Danny Ferry, have the kind of assets that would allow them to make a more "interesting" deal, according to the source. It also makes far more sense for the Hawks to move Smith to the Western Conference rather than put him where he would serve as competition. Sulia

On the Celtics’ side, sources say Danny Ferry and his front office have kicked the tires on a number of things, but trading Garnett has never been one they have seriously considered. Garnett does have a no-trade provision in his contract and has made it clear he would only entertain waiving it if teammate Paul Pierce were traded, if Doc Rivers was fired or if the deal was to an LA team, so at least there is a window. Sources point to Garnett’s undying loyalty to Rivers and Pierce as key reasons he would block a trade, and with the Celtics riding a four-game winning streak its highly unlikely Garnett approves a move. A free agent’s current team can offer him more money and more contractual seasons than can any outside suitor. Smith has said he feels he’s worth the maximum. The Hawks might agree. Then again, they might not. Danny Ferry, the Hawks’ general manager, offered this boilerplate declaration Monday: “Our focus continues to be on building the Atlanta Hawks, and not just for next seasons but for many seasons.” This would seem to suggest that he’s open to any and all offers but not so desperate he feels a need to do anything anytime soon. The Atlanta Hawks have signed veteran guard Jannero Pargo to a second 10-day contract, Hawks President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Danny Ferry announced today. Since signing his first 10-day deal on January 21, 2013, Pargo has averaged 5.2 points, 2.6 assists and 1.0 rebounds in 16.0 minutes (.400 FG%, .462 3FG%), appearing in five contests. In his ninth NBA season, Pargo played in seven games earlier this year with the Washington Wizards, putting in 3.0 points and 2.0 assists in 14.6 minutes per contest (.250 FG%, 1.000 FT%). In 50 games last season with the Hawks, he averaged 5.6 points, 1.9 assists and 1.5 rebounds in 13.4 minutes (.415 FG%, .384 3FG%, .950 FT%). NBA.com

For the first two months, the Hawks did, notching wins over the Thunder, Pacers, Clippers, Nuggets, Grizzlies and Bulls. They held 11 of their first 13 opponents under 100 points. They've basically repeated the string of late, holding 10 of their last 11 opponents under 100. But the difference is that in that first streak, the Hawks scored an average of 93.9 points per game. In this recent stretch, Atlanta has scored just 87.8 per game. That included a franchise-record low 58 points against the Bulls last Monday, which served as the backdrop for Smith's suspension, which came after an incident in Tuesday's practice. "It was an isolated incident," Ferry said Sunday, "and it was addressed." NBA.com

But Ferry didn't think the Hawks as previously constituted could get out of the East, and he was right. He said he didn't want to make a decision about Drew's future before working with him. But that hasn't stopped speculation around the league that Ferry's just waiting for the season to end before bringing in Mike Brown, whom Ferry hired when he was Cleveland's GM to coach the LeBron James-led Cavs in 2005. "I've enjoyed working with Larry, first of all," Ferry said. "We talked at the beginning of the year. Let's dig into this season, get to know each other, work together. We can sit and talk after the season as it relates to where we're headed as a team. I've really enjoyed working with him. He does his preparation. He works really hard at what he does. When we've played well we've really been well-prepared as a basketball team." NBA.com

One exec privy to Atlanta's trade posture told me Ferry seems to be in "win now" mode, which suggests he'll try to add an All-Star-caliber talent alongside Smith rather than trade him. CBSSports.com

Celtics coach Doc Rivers called it “sour grapes” that Hawks general manager Danny Ferry gave officials a DVD believed to show guard Rajon Rondo bumping a referee during a loss last week. Rondo was subsequently suspended by the NBA for one game for bumping referee Rodney Mott while arguing a charging call in Saturday’s game and failure to cooperate with a league investigation. Rondo was not penalized at the time. The NBA also fined Ferry $15,000 for “inappropriate interaction” with officials after the game. Although the league did not elaborate on the reason for the fine, it was the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that reported Ferry gave the officiating crew a DVD believed to contain footage of the play. Video of the incident was also played by NBA TV. Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Did the trade catch up by surprise? Marvin Williams: I can’t necessarily say I was expecting it. I think anytime anybody is traded they are always surprised. It was just one of those things where I was working out and a couple of buddies of mine had told me they heard I got traded. During the summer time there are always rumors going around so I really didn’t pay too much attention. When I got done working out I had a couple voice mails from Rick Sund, my agent. I called Rick Sund back and he expressed to me that I may see it on TV or on Twitter but that I was going to be traded so he wanted to let me know firsthand. I greatly appreciated that. They did everything first class. They were awesome about the whole situation. When I got back to my house, I saw across the bottom of the (TV) screen that I got traded to Utah. Q. It was Rick Sund who called you? Not Danny Ferry? Marvin Williams: Actually Danny was on the line as well. I figured Rick reached out to me because he already knew me. I had never met Danny Ferry personally. I didn’t get a chance to speak to him when he got the job. Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Danny Ferry's dilemma, according to one opposing GM: the Atlanta Hawks match or exceed last year's .600 winning percentage despite dealing away Joe Johnson and Larry Drew wins NBA Coach of the Year. Success, the GM's theory goes, will make it all the harder for Ferry to tear down and rebuild the team as he see fits. Sulia
