But the Griz become more potent if Pondexter, Carter and Leuer are making shots. If not, how long will it take for Joerger to consider giving minutes to rookie guard Jordan Adams? “We’ve been putting them out there and believe that they’re going to get the job done,” Joerger said of the second unit. “We’ve been really positive with some of those guys. We’re showing them everything that they do well. We try to promote that we’re behind you.” When asked if he had a set number of games in mind that could trigger a decision to re-evaluate the bench rotation and make changes, Joerger said: “I don’t know what the alternatives are.” Memphis Commercial Appeal

Bzdelik, who made a name for himself as a strong defensive coach with the Miami Heat under Pat Riley, makes his NBA return with a Grizzlies team that speaks the same language as those Riley-led Heat squads once did. "The timing was right," said Bzdelik, who joined Griz coach Dave Joerger's staff as an assistant coach last month. And Joerger appreciates the timing of Bzdelik's sudden availability. In search of another coach with NBA head coaching experience and someone to help sustain the Grizzlies' elite defense, Joerger tabbed Bzdelik. "That's where his focus will be," Joerger said, referring to his desire to tap into Bzdelik's highly regarded defensive mind. "I value his head coaching experience but everybody brings a different strength. … What he brings is great experience having worked with Riley in Miami. He's a detail guy. He's very organized. He's going to fit with the level of toughness that we have and want to keep having here." Memphis Commercial Appeal

"He's a great basketball mind," Griz general manager Chris Wallace said. Bzdelik made the case that being away from the NBA for so long shouldn't be viewed negatively because of the extent of his resume. "Players are so young now in the league that I've got a sense of how to connect with them by being in college and I have an understanding of that generation," Bzdelik said. "I've been around a lot of veteran (NBA) players, too. My first year in the NBA with Washington we had Moses Malone and Bernard King. I can draw from both experiences as far as veteran players and younger players. I really missed the NBA. I love the NBA. I always stayed connected with it. It's great to be back in it. Saunders didn’t offer the job to Memphis Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger as reported, though they did have discussions. Joerger, a Staples, Minn., native, ended up signing a contract extension with the Grizzlies on May 27. “First of all, the interview process was interesting,” Saunders said. “We talked to a lot of people, a lot of good people. Some college guys, [Michigan State’s] Tom Izzo is a friend of mine, [Iowa State’s] Freddie Hoiberg. When you go through that situation they have things they want to do. To coach at [the NBA] level is difficult because there’s a lot of factors that get involved. So when it came down to it and we started going through everybody, I went to Glen this week and I said, ‘Here’s some options we have.’ Then Glen said, based on where our team is right now, I think you’re the best viable option to coach this team and move forward.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Was Saunders serious about Joerger? “We were serious,” he said. “We never got to a point with anyone — what do people consider? We were going down the road where was he going to be able come, even if he could come? That I don’t know. When you start getting into this there’s a lot of factors that get involved.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Asked if he would have hired Joerger, who went 50-32 this past season in his first year as an NBA head coach, Saunders said: “A lot of that, we weren’t to that point in the situation. Do I like Dave Joerger? I liked him. I think he is a good coach and has done a good job. I can’t answer that because we never got there. It’s like anything, when you’re going through a situation, until you get to the end and you know everything you have, that’s when you hire a guy. Until that point, and we never got to that point because we never really — their guy [Grizzlies owner Robert Pera] wasn’t going to let him come. There were a lot of guys I liked, do I like him? Yeah, I like him. I like a lot of guys.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger insisted that the franchise’s foundation is as secure as the FedExForum practice court wall he leaned against Thursday afternoon. “The stability going forward is rock solid,” he said. Joerger addressed a throng of local media about recent developments and what’s to come with the franchise. He revealed that he’ll have input on the process of hiring a general manager although Joerger wouldn’t say if he’s submitted a list of candidates. “The plan is not going to be revealed. But the process has begun,” Joerger said, explaining that the next GM has to be the best fit for the organizational structure going forward. Memphis Commercial Appeal
