Last week, the Lakers cut rookie forward Elias Harris, reducing the team's roster to 14 players. Undrafted out of Gonzaga, Harris was on a rookie minimum salary of $490,180, of which $100,000 was guaranteed. In two appearances, for a total of just under six minutes, Harris wasn't able to notch a single point. The Lakes made sure to cut him before he earned more than this guarantee, reducing the team's total payroll from $79,186,502 to $78,796,322. Though the salary difference was "just" $390,180, the Lakers saved an additional $682,815 in luxury-tax penalties. Waiving Harris saved the Lakers a total of almost $1.1 million. Los Angeles Times

Recently signed Lakers rookie Elias Harris is spending off-season time with the coaching staff to improve his game before training camp. "We see Elias almost every day, and he's talking all the nuances of what (assistant coach) Dan D'Antoni is teaching him," said Mark Madsen to Mike Trudell of Lakers.com. Harris is working to make "his shot a more balanced and consistent shot," according to Madsen. "His driving game is something he's spending a lot of time with (player development coach) Larry Lewis on." Los Angeles Times

Mark Madsen: The NBA is a league of specialists and I think Elias could have a number of them. There's no question in my mind that he can be a defensive stopper. He's already proven the ability to get out in transition and finish on the break. He can also play the half court game and wear someone down with his size and strength. And as he continues to hone that three-point shot, that can be really big for him. MT: And the bottom line – does he belong in the NBA? Madsen: There's no doubt in my mind that Elias can play in the NBA. Training camp is where everyone has to prove themselves. Any player coming in has to, but there's no doubt that Elias has NBA talent. NBA.com

With just two days remaining before the 2013 NBA Draft, the Clippers are conducting their final group workout Tuesday morning at the team’s training facility. Potential first-round pick Tony Mitchell of North Texas is the top rated prospect attending. He averaged 9.3 rebounds in 55 college games and entered the NBA as a sophomore after becoming one of the best high school players in the nation in 2010. Trevor Mbakwe (Minnesota) and Elias Harris (Gonzaga), two more athletic rebounders, will join Mitchell along with guards Ian Clark (Belmont) and Peyton Siva, who led Louisville to the 2013 NCAA title.
