The Bulls chased both Elton Brand and Marcus Camby hard in free agency last summer, hoping one would sign as a fifth big man. When the Hawks offered a one-year, $4 million deal, Brand turned down the chance to return to where he started his career. Chicago Tribune

"I won a contest in the Daily News to be a ballboy for 1 year, in 1977," Lumpkin said. "Just a couple of weeks ago, Jeff told me that I had impressed him back then, and he decided to bring me back for another year, and it went from there. I went from ballboy to the ticket office to equipment manager to director of team travel services to still being here now. None of it would have been possible had it not been for Mr. Jeff. "Since we learned of his illness, you can't imagine the amount of people that have called or visited him. Maurice Cheeks, Jrue Holiday, Rick Mahorn, Darryl Dawkins, Andre Iguodala, Elton Brand . . . Only someone like Mr. Jeff could get that. He was a regular Joe, but he never said a cross word about anybody, and he could tell jokes and stories that would make you laugh for days." Asked if he was surprised the Mavs didn't re-sign him, Brand told the Star-Telegram: "I was a little surprise, but they were in the hunt. They had to get their (salary) cap situation straight and they did tender an offer. I think Dirk (Nowitzki) thinks it's my fault because he didn't say hello to me, but everyone else did.'' Brand, 34, now holds the distinction of being the oldest player currently on the Hawks’ training camp roster. The veteran says he has no plans to retire at season’s end and while Al Horford and fellow free agent signee Paul Millsap figure to get the majority of the Hawks’ frontcourt minutes, he maintains he didn’t join Atlanta to serve as an end of bench mentor. “I’m not to that point where I’m the vet and content getting a few minutes per game,” Brand told HOOPSWORLD. “I want to play. I still think I have a lot in the tank and I’m looking forward to being out there playing.” HoopsWorld

Although he isn’t thinking retirement in the immediate future, Brand does admit his career is winding down which places more importance on winning. “During the latter stage of my career I’m just trying to enjoy myself,” Brand said. “I’m trying to win. Definitely trying to win. I look around this team to see what my role is going to be and I’m going to have to bring it and that excites me.” HoopsWorld

One last thing: What can we expect from you this year on and off the court? Elton Brand: On the court, you can definitely expect a post presence defensively and offensively. Definitely looking forward to it, and I’ll be mixing it up and being tough in the paint for us. Like you alluded to there’s not a lot of size, but we’ve got some strength and quickness. Off the court, being a veteran leader, getting us prepared every night. We have a great group of guys that just want to win. Just knowing these guys from working out here, no one’s selfish, no one’s worried about contracts or anything, they’re just worried about getting better and winning. So, that’s the type of team I want to be a part of. hawks.com

I spoke today with Elton Brand, the latest Hawks free agent signee. Here are a couple of his quotes from the interview. On why he chose the Hawks: “It was attractive to me because I like what Danny (Ferry) is trying to put together there and the part that I would play. It was a tough decision because there were some other teams courting me. ... With my help in Atlanta we can be as good as some of the other teams that were courting me. I will be able to play and I love to play still. It was a great opportunity for me.” Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The Atlanta Hawks have signed forward/center Elton Brand, President of Basketball Operations/GM Danny Ferry announced today. Per club policy, terms were not disclosed. “Elton brings a veteran presence both on and off the court and is a welcomed addition to our locker room,” Ferry said. “His ability to play center or power forward will give our frontcourt a great deal of versatility and we think he will be an outstanding fit to our program.” NBA.com

Free agent forward Elton Brand is signing a one-year deal with the Hawks, agent David Falk told HoopsHype. "We think it's a great opportunity for him," Falk said. "I can see him playing 4-5 more years because Elton is serious about his conditioning and, besides, he plays more with his head than his body at this point. Atlanta is a good fit and Elton will be a good veteran presence there." Twitter @hoopshype

Johnson said the Knicks would love to add a banger-type big man. They likely will re-sign Kenyon Martin, but he was no help against the Pacers. The Knicks have been told by agent David Falk that Elton Brand won’t be signing with them. “We were exposed needing a big man,’’ Johnson said. “[Roy] Hibbert just destroyed us. We didn’t have anyone to deal with David West. Once we went small-ball, David West had his way. We need a rebounding, big man rather than putting all the emphasis on Tyson [Chandler] all the time. We needed another big [in that series]. If Amar’e [Stoudemire] was 100 percent healthy, that would have helped a whole bunch.’’ New York Post

Last week, sources said the Knicks were preparing to make an offer to Brand. But at this point, the 34-year-old New York native is pursuing offers from several other teams. With that in mind, the Knicks will likely now turn their attention to re-signing Kenyon Martin, according to a source close to the situation. The Knicks could pay him the $1.7 million remaining of their mini mid-level exception, or they could use a veteran's minimum contract to lock him up. That's all of the funds the Knicks have left. According to a source close to the situation, Martin is not close to signing with any team. ESPN.com
