After extended stops in Russia and China, he was invited to a Lakers mini-camp in the summer of ’11 but participated in just two practices—hardly enough, in Green’s mind, for the team to get a good look at him. So Green landed in the D-League, with L.A. D-Fenders, coached by Eric Musselman. A former NBA head coach with the Warriors and Kings, Musselman pushed Green to improve his handles and defense. “Eric Musselman, I really have to thank him a lot in terms of my career,” begins Green. “If I could thank him every day, I would, because he was probably the one person that helped me get back in the League. He helped motivate me, he prepared me. He just showed me a different way of scoring, a different way of playing defense. I have to give a lot of credit to him for me being back.” SLAM

Arizona State men's basketball coach Herb Sendek hired two assistants with NBA experience Tuesday. Eric Musselman has had two NBA head-coaching stints -- with the Golden State Warriors from 2002-04 and the Sacramento Kings in 2006-07 -- and Larry Greer was an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers last season. "In talking to several people it was clear to me Larry and Eric were great additions to the Sun Devil family because of unique backgrounds and a passion for the game," Sendek said in a statement. "I love the fact Eric has coached at so many levels, including leagues where guys are trying to make the next step. Larry comes highly recommended by several people in the basketball world that I have a lot of faith in and are good friends with. Together with coach Dedrique Taylor I am really looking forward to our future as we bring the experience of the NBA game to our program." Arizona Republic

Sendek lost two assistants last week when Scott Pera left for Penn and Lamont Smith joined mentor Lorenzo Romar in Washington. Practice starts in October. According to sources, Sendek would like to add at least one coach with NBA ties. If so, Musselman fits the mold. He was head coach of the Golden State Warriors from 2002-2004 and the Sacramento Kings from 2006-07. Musselman also has served as an NBA assistant with Minnesota, Atlanta and Orlando. Arizona State coach Herb Sendek could be on the verge of a coaching coup. He lost two assistants this month when Scott Pera left for Penn and Lamont Smith departed for rival Washington. Multiple sources said that Sendek has had serious conversations with L.A. D- Fenders head coach Eric Musselman. The Sun Devils, who finished 6-12 in the Pac-12 and 10-21 overall, get high-profile Jahii Carson back after he sat out last season. Musselman was a head coach with Golden State and Sacramento and an assistant with Minnesota, Orlando and Atlanta and also the head coach of the Venezuelan National Team. The Sun Devils need all the help they can get to climb in the Pac-12 and adding a teacher like Musselman will only help speed up the process. ESPN.com

Eric Musselman has expressed the hope that he will remain in charge of Venezuela when the country hosts the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship. The American, who was at the helm of the national the past two summers, including this summer when Venezuela staged the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT), saw his contract with the "squadra criolla" expire after the team fell short of the Quarter-Finals. He met with Venezuelan Basketball Federation President Carmelo Cortez after the OQT, and has now stated clearly his hope of staying in the job. "I would like to continue with the national team," said Musselman, who is right now gearing up for another season in the NBDL with Los Angeles D- Fenders. "I feel a special tie with the players and the Venezuelan federation. "I hope to continue talking with Carmelo (Cortez)." FIBA.com

As expected, the D-Fenders took former NBA point guard Jamaal Tinsley with the first overall pick in the NBA Development League draft Thursday night. “Our goal all along with the first overall pick was to take the player who we felt gave the D-Fenders the best chance of winning right now,” D-Fenders coach Eric Musselman said. “In this case, we were able to do just that with the selection of Jamaal. The guard position was a point of emphasis for us entering the draft, and Jamaal’s extensive experience in the backcourt provides the D-Fenders with a great foundation as we work towards our ultimate goal of winning a D-League championship.” Orange County Register

Every rival team consulted says LA D-Fenders and Eric Musselman will use No. 1 overall pick in Thursday's D-League draft on Jamaal Tinsley. Only other name to come up as potential No. 1 is DePaul-ex Mac Koshwal ... but even in D-League you know L.A. teams desperate for star power Twitter

But as Musselman prepares for the D-League draft -- in which the D-Fenders have the No. 1 pick -- on Thursday, he insists he is not putting in this work primarily to reenter the NBA head-coaching realm. "In my mind this is the best job outside of the 30 NBA head-coaching jobs. For me, at this stage with where I am, I would rather be the D-Fenders coach than an NBA assistant. So I couldn't be luckier." Los Angeles Times
