The state Board of Regents approved a five-year contract worth $2 million Thursday for new Nevada basketball coach Eric Musselman, a two-time former NBA coach who says he's already on the recruiting trail and is planning to run a high-octane offense. Nevada athletic director Doug Knuth formally introduced Musselman at the Lawlor Events Center on the Reno campus shortly after the regents in Las Vegas approved the deal that offers additional incentives, including $10,000 for winning the Mountain West Conference title and another $10,000 for making the NCAA tournament. Two-time NBA head coach Eric Musselman has been selected to coach the Nevada men's basketball team and a five-year contract will be presented to the Board of Regents for their approval at a meeting on Thursday, athletics director Doug Knuth announced today. Musselman, 50, returns to Reno after spending the last three years as an assistant coach at a pair power five schools, first at Arizona State and most recently helping the LSU Tigers to the NCAA Tournament this season. He spent the 2010-11 season in Reno, coaching the NBA D-League's Bighorns and leading them to the only Western Conference title in franchise history. He has been a head coach with seven professional teams, including two seasons with the Golden State Warriors (2002-04) and one with the Sacramento Kings (2006-07), and has won more than 500 games as a head coach with an overall winning percentage of .625 (566-340). No one has gone on record saying he is the top target. But the talk is there. The son of former NBA coach Bill Musselman, Eric has paved his own path in the game of basketball coaching since 1988. Former NBA head coaches Terry Porter and Eric Musselman are interested in the vacant Oregon State basketball coaching job. Another ex-NBA head man, Lionel Hollins, probably isn't, though he would entertain the idea if a representative of the OSU athletic department were to call. Porter, reached Friday in Minneapolis, said he hasn't heard from anyone at Oregon State, though several people outside the program have reached out to him. Oregon State will move quickly in its search to replace Craig Robinson as men's basketball coach but, according to a source close to the process on Wednesday evening, the Beavers are not expected to make a hire until late next week. An athletic department source tells The Oregonian that there has been enthusiastic interest from candidates such as Terry Porter and Lionel Hollins, who have contacted the Beavers directly, as well as a push from boosters to consider others including Eric Musselman and Damon Stoudamire. Former NBA coach Eric Musselman recently interviewed for the head coach opening at California, a person with knowledge of the process said. Musselman met with athletic director Sandy Barbour about replacing Mike Montgomery, who announced his retirement last month. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because the school hasn't released details of its search since Montgomery's announcement on March 31. Musselman, 49, spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Arizona State, with the goal of landing a head coaching job in college. He has a proven track record of developing young players. SI.com

A former NBA head coach, Musselman spent the past two seasons on Herb Sendek's staff to learn the college game. Arizona State associate head coach Eric Musselman, a former NBA head coach, has emerged as a “legitimate candidate’’ for South Florida’s men’s basketball opening, according to a CBSSports.com report Sunday. Musselman, 49, has been on Herb Sendek’s ASU staff for two seasons, helping the Sun Devils to a 43-25 mark, but that is his only college experience. He was head coach of the Golden State Warriors from 2002-04, then the Sacramento Kings in 2006. Tampa Tribune
