After committing himself to preparing for the NBA the past few summers, Vesely has decided to once again play for the Czech Republic at EuroBasket in Slovenia in September. “It’s hard to explain, if somebody wasn’t there, you wouldn’t understand. Calderon hopes to play for Spain in this summer's European Championships but has been unable to commit to his national team without the security of an NBA contract. That tournament begins Sept. 4, so assuming Calderon's free agency isn't protracted, he should have a deal done in plenty of time to participate. Whether that's with the Pistons remains to be seen. "When July arrives, we'll see what happens," he said. "But at the end of the day, it (wasn't) like, 'I trade you, Jose Calderon, in a trade, to make it work (financially).' It was some interest. They (Pistons) went into the trade to get me and they're trying to get me for the (long term), so it's really nice." Booth Newspapers

The FIBA Europe Board has expressed its dissatisfaction with certain aspects of the planned reform of the global calendar, decided by FIBA's recent Central Board in Kuala Lumpur. In particular, the FIBA Europe Board, which convened in Ljubljana, Slovenia this weekend, reiterated its rejection of the FIBA proposal for a four-year cycle for EuroBasket, its flagship even and Europe's premier basketball event. FIBA Europe believes that the two-year cycle should be maintained. FIBA Europe

The Board, in principle, agrees with the introduction of windows during the season for the National Teams competitions. FIBA Europe has decided to have a full analysis of the proposed changes, informally through a working group and seminars involving its member Federation, and formally by bringing the issue before the General Assembly next spring. Without him at the FIBA world championships in Turkey, there was to be no title to defend. But a quarterfinal exit there sat uneasily with Gasol, who views many of his teammates as cherished friends, having come through the country's junior system into a golden age for Spain, now the dominant force in European basketball and a perennial challenger to the USA on the world stage. "I have a very unique feeling when I'm playing for Spain," Gasol said. "We have such a great team always and I think you have to always take advantages of such opportunities. I'm sad when I see my teammates out there without me." ESPN.com
