What is your opinion about Andrea Bargnani? He has been criticized very hard, especially from Marc Berman of the Post. Howard Beck: Bargnani can't seem to stay healthy. But even when he's on the court, he's just not a very good NBA player. At his best, Bargnani is a very good shooter. But he's not particularly good at anything else -- passing, driving posting up or playing defense. He also doesn't seem to have much passion for the game. I will be curious to see if any NBA teams show interest in him this summer. I won't be surprised if he returns to Europe. Sportando

Euroleague Basketball and its clubs, players and coaches throughout the continent join the world family of sports this weekend in mourning the death of a visiting fan to Istanbul on Friday and in condemning the senseless violence that took his life. The 25-year-old stabbing victim, Marko Ivkovic, had travelled from Belgrade to support Crvena Zvezda Telekom in its road game against Galatasaray Liv Hospital Istanbul. The incident, which took place before his arrival to the arena, is under investigation of the Turkish authorities. Euroleague Basketball has requested that both clubs and the Turkish authorities investigating the crime make available all the information about the incident and will evaluate any measures to be taken. You just return from the Intercontinental cup. Whats are the odds that all the continental champion will participate in this tournament in the future? Euroleague CEO Jordi Bertomeu: We would be more than happy to participate in that project as we have done during the last two seasons with the Intercontinental Cup, but we must be realistic and I do not think that we will be able to watch it in the near future. First of all we have a calendar problem, every year is more difficult to find a spot for these kind of competitions. Another reason would be the impossibility of having each continent champion, as it is very difficult that the NBA takes part in this kind of games as they have a completely different economic and organizational reality, a fact that will make that hypothetic competition something without a real sense, a fake, the Intercontinental Cup on the other hand is something fair, clear, the Champion of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague against the Champion of Ligade Las Americas. How do you feel with leaving of European talents to the nba? Euroleague CEO Jordi Bertomeu: I believe the main problem is not that players go away, because they go and come back, too. We have to grow and make Euroleague Basketball attractive enough that they don't go away. That's our job. Our main concern in that aspect is not if players go away but when players go to the NBA, this is the main point that we consider should be evaluated as in some cases players make this change too soon which is something that makes a negative impact in their careers. We saw this summer that 3 coaches moved to the nba. What are you thinking about it? Are you proud that european coaches make it and joined to the NBA? Euroleague CEO Jordi Bertomeu: I think that there are two factors that should be evaluated when talking about not only coaches but also players going to the NBA. First of all is the globalization of basketball and of our society, in the global expansion of the NBA one of the key actions was increasing the number of players coming from different countries;the other factor that we should also take into account is the progressive improvement of the basketball level in traditional basketball regions like Europe but also in other parts of the world as South-America, Asia or Australia, making the gap between the NBA and the rest of competitions smaller. I would personally like to wish the best of the luck to David in this new project that I am confident will be successful. Sportando

Messina made the first adjustment during his unofficial apprenticeship with the Spurs in 2011: Freeing his mind of the stereotypes about the NBA that prevailed among European players, coaches and fans. “Honestly, you find it is much more different from what we think in Europe,” Messina said. “It's completely different. We think we work hard in practice (in Europe) and in the NBA, they don't do anything; that they don't practice. Then you find out, first of all, that there is a lot of individual work; a lot of player development. I found when I was here that all players work a lot on their skills; that good coaches teach them, work them, whatever.” San Antonio Express-News

Messina understands Popovich's obsession with managing the minutes of his veteran players as well as his devotion to the more open European style of play. He recalls Popovich telling reporters after the Spurs played Messina's CSKA club in a preseason game last October that he would make his players watch film of the entire game because Messina's players understood the free-wheeling style better than the Spurs. “He was being kind,” Messina said. “You have no idea how much we study Pop's and the Spurs' offense in Europe because of all those DHOs (dribble handoffs) and dribble drives and drive-and-kick. It really would work the opposite (of Pop studying my offense).” “It is also much more fun to watch when you see all these five players dancing around with the ball.” San Antonio Express-News

Nick Calathes gave an interview at Το Βήμα της Κυριακής (newspaper) and he said about the NBA. (...) Rumors during the summer. “It was a lot stressful everything that happened this summer. I didn't know where I was going to play next season. There was a lot of confusion, while my primary agent, the one who got the deal, got a job at the Memphis Grizzlies as a GM and then he got fired, so I didn't know if I had a second year. At the same time, my agent was talking with European teams, but at the end the Grizzlies decided to keep me. So I am going back and I will do my best to find a better contract, next season. If I don’t make it, I'll go back to Europe Sportando

LeBron never really played the 4 [power forward] in Cleveland, but he played it a ton in Miami. Will you use him in that role, with just one traditional big man on the floor? I just came from the land of the stretch 4s. Stretch 4s became popular in the United States because of Europe. If anyone knows that style of play, it’s probably me. Yeah, you’ll see LeBron there. You’ll see LeBron all over the floor, just like he’s used to playing. I don’t have to change him. Grantland
