Days after his friend and former teammate Shawn Marion said he would retire after the season, Rockets guard Jason Terry maintained he has not changed his plan to play until he is 40-years-old. “I was shocked,” Terry, 37, said of Marion’s decision. “He told me in Cleveland the last time we played them. “I think I can play until the age 40. That’s my goal, something that I set out to do when I first came into the league. My idol is Gary Payton. He played 20 years. Hopefully I can do the same.” Houston Chronicle

Seattle in the early 90’s was a three-sport city, but after the Sonics fired head coach KC Jones halfway through the 91’-92’ season, the team hired a coach who would become an icon a decade later. George Karl came from Spain to replace Jones and the Sonics soon became the main event in town once again. Before the coaching change, Seattle’s enigmatic young stars, Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp, were under fire and fans squawked for the pair to be traded. But where fans saw trouble, Karl saw potential for greatness. “Karl lit a box of dynamite under this city,” says Gastineau. The Sports Quotient

The Gasman spotlights the Golden State series’ pivotal moment with lucid detail. He points to a monstrous alley-oop dunk from Payton to Kemp to crack a 124-124 tie in the third game of the series and crack the sound barrier inside the Coliseum. Gastineau reminisces about one of the iconic moments in Seattle sports history. “It was a big lob from Payton to Kemp for just an unbelievable dunk. And it was a remarkable call from [Sonics Radio/TV broadcaster, Kevin] Calabro, and the next two days you couldn’t turn our station on without hearing it.” Calabro’s call reciprocated the energy in the Coliseum that night with a passionate crescendo as Kemp buried the ball through the hoop. “Up to Gary Payton, a lead pass to Kemp and he’ll slam it down! What a lob! Wow! Gary Payton with a lob ahead to Kemp! He went airborne and defied gravity! What a play! The Reignman has struck!” The Sports Quotient

Q: Is it true you're going to have Gary Payton mentoring Giannis? Jason Kidd: No, I'm not having anyone mentor anyone. For me, it's looking at guys that I've played against or played with that can maybe help come in for a day or two to talk about what it takes to be successful. And so Gary at some point might come in and talk, but we're not going to hire him. CBSSports.com

Gary Payton is visiting Athens, Greece, which is the last stop of the “NBA3x” tour and he had something Greek-related to announced in the local media. As the “Glove” revealed he was invited by his childhood friend Jayson Kidd to visit the Bucks during the training camp in order to help in Giannis Antetotokounmpo. Payton will not have a formal role in the coaching staff of Milwaukee, but he can be part of the process to turn the “Greek freak” into the first 7-foot point guard. As the former great player said in a joined interview, organized by OTE TV, the NBA’s television rights holder in the country: “When Jayson said to me that he intends to use him as a point guard, I told him to stop making jokes. “Gary don’t talk before you see him”, was his answer and I watched him during the Las Vegas Summer league. He can handle the ball, he can drive, he is smart and he is really athletic. That’s why I was asked to go to Milwaukee during the training camp in order to help him adapt to the demands of the modern point guard position”. EuroHoops.net
