HoopsHype Gary Payton rumors

September 20, 2014 Updates

Gary Payton is visiting Athens, Greece, which is the last stop of the “NBA3x” tour and he had something Greek-related to announced in the local media. As the “Glove” revealed he was invited by his childhood friend Jayson Kidd to visit the Bucks during the training camp in order to help in Giannis Antetotokounmpo. Payton will not have a formal role in the coaching staff of Milwaukee, but he can be part of the process to turn the “Greek freak” into the first 7-foot point guard. As the former great player said in a joined interview, organized by OTE TV, the NBA’s television rights holder in the country: “When Jayson said to me that he intends to use him as a point guard, I told him to stop making jokes. “Gary don’t talk before you see him”, was his answer and I watched him during the Las Vegas Summer league. He can handle the ball, he can drive, he is smart and he is really athletic. That’s why I was asked to go to Milwaukee during the training camp in order to help him adapt to the demands of the modern point guard position”. EuroHoops.net

Jason Kidd had a vision going to Milwaukee: to see Giannis Antetokounmpo running the point for the Bucks from the "1" position. The new coach of the "Bucks" is not only determined to implement this idea, but will have the help of one of the top point guards of the 90s in this effort: Gary Payton. Gary Payton is in Athens today and at an event held during the afternoon in the northern suburbs, he revealed that he has agreed with the Bucks to assume the role of 'Special Advisor' for Giannis Antetokounmpo during next season. The "Glove" will start work during pre-season, which will begin at the end of the month, and said that he has met with the 19 year old forward in Las Vegas, as well as with Jason Kidd, with whom he has a long friendship from the years they have both played in the NBA. They called him the Glove, one of the best defensive players ever to put on an NBA uniform. Gary Payton, a longtime friend of Bucks coach Jason Kidd, could be in the mix for a position on the team's coaching staff. Payton has been around during Bucks summer league practices this week and sat in the stands with Kidd, general manager John Hammond and assistant general manager David Morway during Friday's game between the Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers. "I'm just seeing what kind of interest level he has in coaching at all, seeing where he's at," Kidd said Saturday. "You're talking about one of the best competitors in the game." It's been a rough go for Didier Drogba and Turkish giants Galatasaray in recent weeks. But nothing that dinner with NBA star Gary Payton couldn't help fix! Less than 48 hours after a disappointing scoreless draw with Gaziantepspor left Galatasaray 10 points behind Süper Lig leaders Fenerbahce in Turkey, Drogba spent some time with Payton, who was in town conducting a clinic on behalf of the NBA. "Was good to change my mind in this difficult moment," Drogba wrote via Instagram, clearly not wanting Galatasaray supporters to think he was cavorting with Payton. "Thanks to @nba for this great diner yesterday with a Legend...Mr Gary Payton aka #theglove #NBA #sonics #seattle #supersonics #lakers celtics #miamiheat #istanbul #galatasaray #soccer #basketball #istanbul" MLSsoccer.com

Next up for the four-time MVP is Clyde Drexler, who had 22,195. For The Win

Manchester hosted a match between Oklahoma City Thunder and Philadelphia 76ers last week and in January the Brooklyn Nets will take on Atlanta Hawks in London as the NBA expands its ‘Global Games’ series. But former Seattle Supersonics point guard Payton, regarded as one of the best in NBA history, does not believe the natural progression is to establish a team abroad. “It would be too hard for any franchise to move outside the US because the travelling would be terrible,” he said. “It is just not possible. So I don’t think that will be coming. The Daily Express

Payton continued his criticism of Schultz, who was criticized heavily in Seattle for selling the Sonics to an owner who had relocation intentions. Schultz sold the Sonics less than six months after announcing they were on the market. “He just messed up our whole [franchise] and people did leave Seattle alone when he owned the team,” said Payton. “That’s why he had to sell it again, because he was struggling. He made a lot of silly moves and the first silly move was getting rid of me.” Boston Globe

“I wasn’t asking for a lot; I never asked for a new contract [before my previous one expired],” Payton said about his final season in Seattle. “All I asked was whether we were going to get an extension [in the offseason] and [Schultz] made it seem like, ‘I don’t care about you no more, you’re nothing.’ So, that’s what happened. He [saw] that wasn’t the right way and the whole franchise went downhill from there. “It was time to go. I didn’t want to work for this guy. He knew it and I knew it. We don’t have the right people running this squad. Why sit here and be miserable.” Boston Globe

A few choice quotes from a clearly emotional Glove: "If anyone wants to know where I get my personality, just stop any one of my siblings, and it'll become very clear." "Everyone's asking me why (John Stockton) is the hardest person to guard instead of Michael Jordan. First off, that's my opinion. So that's how it's going to go." CBSSports.com
