Del Negro is just the second coach to leave the team with a winning record, following Larry Brown in 1993. "This was a difficult decision, but we feel this is the best decision for our franchise moving forward," said Gary Sacks, the Clippers' vice president of basketball operations. Del Negro and Sterling never officially met in person after the season, but they did have an extended conversation on the phone last weekend that a source described as "positive." ESPN.com

Do the Clippers really think he would accept almost $28 million less to sign elsewhere? "Here you have two inexperienced people running your basketball operation in [GM] Gary Sacks and [son-in-law] Eric Miller," I told Sterling. "And Andy Roeser doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to basketball personnel decisions. "So I wonder, is this decision being made because the players are now calling the shots? Am I off base?" "No, you're not off base," Sterling said. "This is a players' league, and, unfortunately, if you want to win you have to make the players happy. Don't you think that's true?" “We would like to thank Vinny for everything he did during his three years with the organization,” Clippers Vice President of Basketball Operations Gary Sacks said. “Vinny helped this team win a Pacific Division title and we greatly appreciate all that he and his staff helped us accomplish. This was a difficult decision, but we feel this is the best decision for our franchise moving forward.” NBA.com

Though the coaching situation could be resolved this week, Paul's status will drag through the summer. Teams, including the Clippers, are not allowed to speak with free agents until July 1. "The No. 1 priority for us right now has to be signing our star player, Chris Paul," Sacks said. "That's our goal. We want to put ourselves in a position to do that. We feel like this organization is in a position to move forward with that goal in mind. "I feel very confident. He is an integral part of this and we feel like we've had a great partnership for the last couple years and we want to continue it, obviously." Los Angeles Daily News

Sacks said there is no timetable for making a decision on Del Negro's future with the Clippers, who won 56 games this season before bowing out in six games in the playoff series against Memphis. "We'll sit down and talk with Vinny and I will go over some things for the future and discuss it with our owner (Donald Sterling) and see where we're at," Sacks said. "It's kind of early right now, we're still in the process of getting feedback from everybody and seeing how we came up short in the series. Los Angeles Daily News

VP of Basketball Ops Gary Sacks got more than just a change in title - bigger role with it. According to President Andy Roeser, the team will ask less of Coach Vinny Del Negro from a player personnel perspective (whereas he played a larger role this summer). "Gary’s the right guy to run our basketball operations,” - said Roeser - who noted that Sacks' already made his imprint on the team already over recent years. Sulia
