Gerald Henderson and Matt Carroll have been named captains of the Charlotte Bobcats this season. They’re among the longest-tenured players on the roster (technically, reserve center Gana Diop has the longest tenure). Also Henderson and Carroll were among the most committed players to the off-season workout program new coach Mike Dunlap has emphasized. Henderson appreciated that Dunlap consulted with him about this, rather than just announce captains. “He asked me if I wanted to be captain. He wanted me to take it on,’’ said Henderson, last season’s leading scorer at 15.1 points per game. “I don’t like just being called a captain. I wanted to earn it.’’ Charlotte Observer

Another player who looks good is 7-0 Desagana Diop. When I say he looks good, I mean he’s lost a lot of weight. It’s as if he and Thomas made a trade. Diop no longer is 350 pounds or 330 or whatever he played at last season. He’s less than 300. He can run down court without pausing to rest. Guard Gerald Henderson is the best player in the scrimmage, and he plays as if he knows it. He is especially effective in the lane, freeing himself with a quick step or a sudden stop. As if the Charlotte Bobcats could afford any additional injury woes, there was fear over the All-Star break that small forward Corey Maggette might have a torn meniscus that would have ended his season. "Just a God-send he didn't have a torn meniscus," coach Paul Silas told the Observer on Monday night. "That's what I (initially) heard." The diagnosis proved to be less dire; Maggette has inflammation and swelling in his right knee, and sat out practice Monday. He said he hopes to practice Tuesday, and if that goes all right, Maggette will try to play Wednesday against the Detroit Pistons in Auburn Hills, Mich. Charlotte Observer

Charlotte Bobcats coach Paul Silas has said repeatedly that once he gets all three starters back from injury, he'll field a far more competitive team. That won't happen before the All-Star break. Shooting guard Gerald Henderson (hamstring strain) won't be back for tonight's home game against the Indiana Pacers. Henderson ran on the sidelines Tuesday, but has yet to fully practice since hurting himself during a road game against Portland Feb. 1. Charlotte Observer

Charlotte guard/forward Gerald Henderson will miss 2 to 4 weeks with a strained right hamstring, a source told the Associated Press. The Bobcats (3-20) have not announced the injury, sustained in Wednesday's loss to Portland. Henderson, from Episcopal Academy, could be replaced in the starting lineup by Matt Carroll, from Hatboro-Horsham High. Philadelphia Inquirer

A person familiar with the situation says Bobcats guard/forward Gerald Henderson will miss two-to-four weeks with a strained right hamstring. The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity Thursday because the team has not publicly announced the injury. It's the same injury that has sidelined Bobcats forward Corey Maggette for the last 15 games. TSN

Bobcats owner Michael Jordan recently gave Henderson a video that Jordan helped edit. For lack of a better description, it was the good and bad of Henderson’s first dozen games this season: Plays that succeeded, others that didn’t. Mostly, it was about how best to get to the foul line, something Jordan excelled at throughout a Hall of Fame career. “It was so helpful,” Henderson said following Friday’s practice. “I watch tape all the time, but to get someone else’s eyes on it, you get such a different outlook. Particularly when it’s him.” Jordan has taken a great personal interest in Henderson’s development. It started before the lockout when Jordan advised Henderson to focus on his ball handling, because without the ability to drive to the rim, Henderson was forfeiting what’s best about his game.
