For the Nets, this galling 99-93 loss was a thuddingly bad ending to a schizoprehenic season, and they didn't pretend otherwise afterward. "I said all along I thought that we were the better team," forward Gerald Wallace said. "And it hurts. ... They came out with a sense of urgency. And we didn't." ESPN.com

Brooklyn Nets coach P.J. Carlesimo said before Game 4 of the first-round matchup with the Chicago Bulls that he hasn't read Friday's comments from a disappointed Gerald Wallace, but that the issue has still been addressed. "I didn't see [Wallace's comments] to be honest with you, but I've talked to Gerald and hopefully we've done a better job of letting Gerald know the things that are important for him to do to help us be successful," Carlesimo said. But while flying around the court in the first half of the first quarter, Wallace picked up a quick pair of fouls and, with 4:46 remaining in the first, was sent to the bench for the rest of the half. Wallace then was never able to get back on track after halftime, failing to score in 12 second-half minutes and finishing with two points and three rebounds in the Nets’ 90-82 loss to the Bulls. “He was [doing well early],” interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said, “and not putting him back in ... he didn’t get the minutes he’s been getting. That really hurt. “In retrospect, the fact that we got out [down] one at the half, I felt good about it, but when I saw Gerald’s minutes at the end of the game, I didn’t feel good about it. We’ve been saying all along, Gerald’s got to play big minutes for us. So, whether it’s fouls or me not putting him back in or whatever, his minutes have got to be pretty high for us to be successful.” New York Post

Point guard Deron Williams was able to push the tempo in the first half—thanks to a string of defensive stops—and the results were profound, particularly for a team that ranked 28th in possessions per game during the regular season. "We want to continue to play at that pace," Williams said Sunday. "I think we're a lot better, I think we get into a better rhythm when we push the tempo and it flows better." Specifically, the expedited offense galvanized Gerald Wallace, who had struggled to adjust to the Nets' half-court ways during the regular season. "That suits him," Williams continued. "It suits me, it suits him, it suits a lot of our guys. I think we got to get him more involved, get up and down and not let them set up [on defense] and get him out in transition where he can be active." Wall Street Journal

Wallace confirmed afterwards what seemed to be the case to anyone who had watched the game: that six weeks of struggles since the All-Star break in mid-February have sapped the veteran’s confidence in his shooting stroke. “My confidence is totally gone,” Wallace told The Post Saturday. “I’m just at the point now ... I’m in a situation where I feel like if I miss, I’m going to get pulled out of the game, you know what I’m saying? So my whole concept is just that you can’t come out of the game if you’re not missing shots. “I think I lost the confidence of the coaching staff and my teammates. So my main thing is those guys can score, so instead of thinking about it so much, just trying to focus on defense, try to move the ball and get those guys shots.” New York Post

“I’ve been working and I’ve been shooting, but it’s hard,” Wallace said. “Regardless of how much work I’m doing on my shot, the fact of the matter is it is what it is. “I’ve been in the league 12 years. Am I mad about not being out on the court? Am I mad about not making shots? Yeah. But my main thing is I’m trying to stay on the court. I know I can play defense, make plays for the other guys and try to do some things to help me stay on the court.” New York Post

The event at Brooklyn Bowl drew Deron Williams, Brook Lopez, Andray Blatche, Joe Johnson and Gerald Wallace. All seemed to have a good time, even though D-Will did compare Kris Humphries to a "robot" ... and then thought better of it. NetsDaily

Nets coach P.J. Carlesimo only praised one of his players following the Nets' 92-83 loss to the Lakers on Tuesday. And it wasn't Brook Lopez, who finished with a game-high 30 points and 11 rebounds. No, the kind words were for Gerald Wallace. "If you had said to me before the game, 'Kobe’s gonna go 9-for-24 with four assists, I would have taken it, no questions asked," Carlesimo said. "Don’t get me wrong, I’m not taking anything away from Kobe, but I thought the job Gerald did on Kobe was exceptional. All you can do is make a player that good work, and he did that." ESPN.com

Over in the Nets locker room, it was just as ugly. Gerald Wallace went off on his teammates. "They're the defending champions, but I don't think they're much better than us," Wallace said. "I don't think they're 20 points better than us. I'm not saying they can't beat us, but they're not 20 points better ... they've embarrassed us three times. What does that say for us as a team trying to be a championship team?" Then, he really got angry. "Typical Nets basketball," Wallace said of the third. "We don't play together. Careless turnovers. We don't execute offensively. And defensively, we don't do anything. We don't defend. We don't guard the ball. We don't help each other out. It's the same story as it's been all season." NetsDaily

In back-to-back blowout losses to Memphis and Houston last Friday and Saturday, the Nets gave up an unacceptable 122 points in the paint and 129 first-half points. On Wednesday night, they allowed Miami to shoot 51.8 percent from the field, including 11 of 19 from 3-point range. "It's disappointing, because in any sport you measure yourself against the champions, and they're the champions, and they've embarrassed us all three times," Wallace said. "What does that say for us as a team trying to be a championship team?" Wallace refused to say that there was a massive talent gap between the two teams. "We match up with them talent-wise, 1 through 5 and down the bench," Wallace said. "It just has to do with teamwork, executing offensively and defensively and helping each other out on the defensive end, making the extra pass on the offensive end and taking care of the ball, and we didn't do that tonight." When the Nets dramatically overhauled their roster this summer, the plan wasn’t to put together a .500 team. But that’s exactly what they are after last night’s 108-93 loss to the Bucks dropped them to 14-14 this season. “We’re a way better team than what our record is,” Gerald Wallace said. “I’m [bleeping ticked] off about us losing, and especially the way we’re losing.” New York Post

Forward Gerald Wallace (15 points, six rebounds, three steals), who was one of the only Nets putting his heart and soul into every possession, seemed to shed a bit of light on what’s been going on. "We’re dropping our heads on every little mistake," Wallace said. "It’s carrying over from the locker room on to the court, and it shows. ... Losing wears on you." Boston dominated from the opening tip. The Celtics outscored the Nets 34-18 in the second quarter and led by as many as 21 points in the third. "This game reminded me of that preseason game when they came in and felt like they had something to prove," Johnson said. "We kind of had that look in our eyes like we’re up 2-0. They’re thinking March, April and May, and we didn’t have that sense of urgency until the fourth quarter." ESPN.com

The incident happened with 9:31 to play and the Celtics ahead 77-60. Nets guard C.J. Watson launched a 3-pointer that was rebounded by his teammate, Gerald Wallace. Wallace was fouled on the rebound by Jeff Green. Losing his balance following the foul, Wallace reached out to grab the shorts of Kevin Garnett. Replays showed Wallace holding on to Garnett's jersey shorts after the play, with there being a brief moment in which Garnett has his hand around Wallace's wrist. Wallace had little to say on the play after the game. But Garnett didn't hesitate to state his case on what happened. "He just grabbed my shorts. I tried to help him up, make sure he didn't fall," Garnett said in describing his role on the play. "And he just kept grabbing my shorts. So I asked him what he was doing. He didn't respond. And I looked at him, what you doing? And I tried to smack his hand away. It really wasn't nothing. He just jacked my shorts." CSNNE.com
