Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald thought Mike Woodson should have won Coach of the Year this season. So he is hardly listening to fan and media complaints that Woodson had a bad playoff. Woodson, 55, finished third in the Coach of the Year voting, won 54 games, the Atlantic Division title and the Eastern Conference’s second seed. Woodson’s regular-season record as Knicks coach is 72-34, but critics point to his playoff miscues. He never has been out of the second round in eight seasons as a head coach with the Knicks and Hawks. The naysayers knock Woodson for his misuse of rookie Chris Copeland, his blind allegiance to slumping J.R. Smith, his insistence on forcing a rusty Amar’e Stoudemire into the rotation midstream and ignoring 3-point ace Steve Novak versus Indiana. New York Post

“I think Woody did a great job,’’ said Grunwald, an Indiana classmate of Woodson’s. “I think he’s my coach of the year still, although he finished third. He did an excellent job this year. We wound up where we didn’t want to be — out of the playoffs. We all have to take a look at ourselves from the front office to the coaching staff to the players.’’ New York Post

Anyone else think it seemed odd that Glen Grunwald seemed more convinced Jason Kidd would be back than J.R. Smith? Speaking of Kidd, he stressed the positive exit interview - but as Frank Isola tweeted earlier - I still would not be surprised if Kidd looked for a buyout for a lesser role with a contender to finish his career. Grunwald stopped sort of guaranteeing the Knicks will re-sign J.R. Smith but said his policy this offseason is not to say specifically they will definitely re-sign a player, probably because of the Jeremy Lin fiasco. Grunwald sounded as if Smith was in the plans. “In general it’s best to maintain continuity,’’ Grunwald said, “with the same core group together. I’m not going to comment on any individual player because we’re not finished with our evaluation. I don’t think you should read that one way or another. I don’t think it would be fair to say , yeah, we really want him back.’’ New York Post

Knicks GM Glen Grunwald said Jason Kidd gave him no indication he was retiring. “We had a great meeting with Jason yesterday,’’ Grunwald said in a end-of-season press conference with the media. “He was a big part of our success and we look forward to having him back next year.’ New York Post

"Glen Grunwald is a great guy and very well-respected throughout the league," an Eastern Conference executive said. "Every team has their own way of doing things. The Knicks, they do things a little differently." That different approach has meant that Grunwald is a ghost in New York. Bergen Record

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman scales towers and jumps from planes for charity when not holding court as the face of the franchise. Billy King has the Nets as one of the most open and transparent teams in the NBA. Grunwald has spoken to the media twice this season — at media day to open camp and in a conference call after the trade deadline when he was greeted by one reporter with, "Is this really you, Glen?" Asked about Stoudemire’s odd status as a $100 million player playing 20-plus minutes, Grunwald said, “Salary doesn’t matter. We need to come up with a formula that will be successful. If that’s Amar’e coming off the bench, that’s great. If Coach Woodson decides to change that, it’s all about trying to win here. Amar’e has been wonderful in that regard, a true professional and great teammate. ... I think he’s moving as well as ever.’’ New York Post

Although former Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni professed to love European players, sources told The Post he was against bringing in Spanish League point guard Pablo Prigioni the past few years. The Post reported in July the Knicks had Prigioni on their radar for four years. According to multiple sources, Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald and European scout Kevin Wilson wanted to sign Prigioni, but never made an offer because of D’Antoni’s reluctance. Sources said D’Antoni felt Prigioni was a third-stringer and didn’t have the speed to make an NBA rotation. New York Post

The Nets' season opener instead will be Saturday night at Barclays Center against the Toronto Raptors. Bloomberg, who confirmed that game would go on as scheduled, said he's working with the city to provide extra bus service for fans to get to the arena. Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald said Friday's game against the Miami Heat at Madison Square Garden is still on. NBA spokesman Tim Frank later confirmed that in an email. "We're good to go," Grunwald said. The NBA said it doesn't anticipate the status of the Knicks-Heat game to change Thursday. Nets coach Avery Johnson informed his team in the middle of Wednesday's practice at Barclays Center that the game against the Knicks was postponed. "We're definitely disappointed ... but we realize the seriousness of the situation," Nets point guard Deron Williams said on "SportsCenter." "A lot of people have lost homes and lost loved ones, so in the grand scheme of things, it's really not that important." ESPN.com
